We watched this cartoon on Mr. Bill's Cartoons, years ago, and it was our favorite. However, in the cartoon we watched, there was a different dubbing than this one. The snowman melted and said, "Goodblye everyblody, goodblye". I wonder how to the copy witht that particular dub over. Great cartoon, and brings back sweet memories of years gone by. :)
Hello riteleftwing, this is Hile. I am the person you contacted 7 days ago regarding the english dubbed version of "Snowman In July". I have it.
I recorded it from WLOS TV 13 here in Asheville NC in November 2004, also, I made copies on both videotape and dvd.
I don't have it posted on youtube, but I can send you a copy of it on videotape or dvd or both. Just let me know how I can get in touch with you about this.
@Hilesmith1 Hi, Wonderful I see you have the cartoon "Snowman In July" I have looked for it for years. I watched it as a kid growing up on WLOS, with Mr. Bill. I would like to get a dvd copy , if possible. My email address is lkta144@aol.com, also, let me know the cost. I lived in Asheville for 27 years and then came back home. Hope to hear from you soon, @oliverkjt
Could be about Leon Trotsky. First he runs around the town stirring up trouble and causing mischief (Russian Revolution) Goes into an icebox at a house out in the middle of nowhere (His many exiles and jail time) Goes to Mexico and spends the rest of his life writing (six months before his assassination he writes about how beautiful the grass, sky and sun are and the world is beautiful.) The rabbit eating the carrot is the next philosopher grabbing hold Trotsky's knowledge and ideas.
Where is the full version? He is supposed to throw the 3 snowball he made in his hat at the dog and the dog go away sadly (I hate that part and I hate snowman because of that lol) but still, where is the full movie?
I have the dubbed version of this cartoon on videotape where the snowman says "Goodbye Everybody" at the end. During the holidays, Mr Bill Norwood would always run this cartoon. To me, this is the ultimate cartoon.
The ending smacks of Nazi death kitsch. And I've seen some of Fischerkoesen's other cartoon on Youtube-I'm sure He was a nice man, but the cartoons aren't as anti-Nazi as some people think."Silly Goose" in particular is obvious Nazi propaganda.(Goose gets in trouble because she won't march in line and loves fashion and urbanity-Yiddish style tune is heard when she meets Fox.)
Does anyone know where you can view this dubbed in english. I too remember it from Mr. Bill's Cartoon Show and it has always been on my mind. It was a favorite if not the favorite of mine. Those ole cartoons from back when I was growing up are so superior to the crap that is shown/made today or for the last 30 + years.
Oh boy, the face at 1:31 just cracks me up to no end.
It's interesting to see how the increased efforts of Goebbels to get an equivalent of Disney as a propaganda machine advanced the 3rd Reich animation. I doubt that they would have reached their goal in the planned timeframe though.
Thank you so much for sharing this classic. For some reason, this became a Christmastime staple on television in Western North Carolina for many years. It doesn't get shown anymore, but everyone seems to remember it vividly. Great stuff.
OMG! I remember when Mr. Bill on channel 13 would show this cartoon. I absolutely loved it and have wondered if I would ever see it again after 40 years!
I do remember the rabbit at the end saying "He was a good snowman, a very good snowman" in English. We had the dubbed version I guess. I wish my chidren had a Mr. Bill Norwood to show great old cartoons like Deputy Dawg and Three Stooges shorts. He was one of a kind.
I watched this as a child. I haven't seen this in probably 40 years. I discovered it on you tube and remembered just about all of it, especially him melting and going in the refrigerator. What fun we had watching it on Dad's projector. lol
I remember watching this movie when I was just a baby with my grandma.. I loved it. Now as a young adult, I have nightmares of it and it scares the living hell out of me. I feel like crying just looking at the snowman. He's so fuckin scary looking!!!!!
Watching this cartoon is a HUGE tradition in our family! I watched it with my siblings every year when we were kids and now I watch it with my own kids, every year. MAJOR childhood memories here! But where's the narration?
just thought id like to say im the proud grandson of my grandma who actually helped sketch this cartoon when she lived in holland and she is still whith us today at the age of 81. She worked alongside fisherkoesen and also created scherzo.
That's beautiful. I would be proud also. I hope she knows how dear it is to many people. This is one of me and my family's "must sees" every Christmas.
"This is the summer of my life, how beautiful you are in your dress of flowers. Who ever saw you did not live in vain, my heart melts in sheer bliss -- How beautiful you are ..." then the infatuated snowman melts ... As a symbol of how we all are never fully gone (at least physically), the carrot that was his nose still makes for a fine treat for the commemorating rabbit mommy ... Cheers, Julia
The cartoon has subtle anti-Nazi symbols. Artist Hans Fischerkoessen was put in prison after the war but then exonerated because his cartoons were realized to be anti-Nazi. Despite being produced by one of the world's most evil regimes, its poignant because the Snowman wants to escape to summer and hides in a refrigerator until July. He dances in the flowers and though happy, he melts but sings that at least he lived to experience good times. Considering the times it was made its very moving.
In 1945, Russian troops arrested Fischerkoesen as a possible Nazi collaborator. He was kept in prison three years and was eventually able to prove he was not a Nazi sympathizer. Three years after that he and his family escaped to West Germany with an animation camera. He later established a studio near the city of Bonn.
Thank you for posting this classic cartoon. I watched it several times when I was a kid, the version I saw was entitled A Snowman in July. I don't remember if the end song was sung in English, but I sure remember the rabbit eating the snowman's carrot/nose.
i really liked this cartoon as a kid, and i still do to this day. i loved how the snowman was so happy just to have a taste of what he knew was never meant to be. it may sound gushy, but it's very poetic to me. btw, i had no idea this was german, i saw an english version of this b4.
(continuation of comment) There is no ideology in the movie itself, it could work simply as a german movie, it's a great piece of animation despite the intended goals. Also, it is thought that the writer and the director weren't much supportive of nazi ideas, another animated film (Verwitterte Melodie) can be viewed as a criticism of it.
For those who wonders why it is called nazi propaganda:It was Goebbels who asked this movie to be made. The NSDAP wanted to create animation of superior quality than Disney, in order to distribute it worldwide, giving reputation to Germany. So this movie was created as a propaganda tool. (comment continued in following comment)
hmm.. i actually found this by looking at the list of nazi propaganda on wikipedia. i'm curious- what exactly is the hidden message in this? i'm actually a bit confused.
because i enjoy reading up on history/WW2 related subjects and someone recently mentioned to me about nazi propaganda hidden in children's cartoons. so i was curious.
@adamworth1979= true. The same goes for the cartoons that came out of Soviet Russia and other iron Curtain countries. Like East Germany's The Sandman. And from Russia, the Hedgehog In The Fog.
Not all films in the Third Reich did contain (overt or hidden) propaganda. But also the 'unpolitical' entertainment had an important system stabilizing function: to make the audience forget about the troubles fo the war (airraids, relatives at the front etc) and the terror of the Nazi-regime (neighbours that disappeared to concentration camps or 'the east' etc)
I pretty much knew what was going to happen to the Snowman, It wouldn't suprise me if Momma rabbit ate his nose at the end, The animation is nice looking,
I had thought there might be more blatant propaganda in this toon, Can anyone translate the snowmans song?
There's an English dub of this done as well. It was a movie that also had santa on it, with these 2 creepy guys, one in a skunk suit, the other a squirrel. It sounds really stupid, but if anyone can tell me the name of that film, please leave a message for me or write to me. I'd greatly appreciate it :D

Does the "DDR2" imprint at the top left of the screen mean that this was recorded off of East German TV?

@1903tx
"DDR2" was one of the two east german TV-Channels. But I wonder, that they already had the possibility to record films in such a good quality.
