I'm still a bit confused about why the heirarchs really do want to activate the rings. Contact Harvest reveals they have known that their whole religion is a complete sham since the beginning of the war, but kept it a secret to keep the Covenant from crumbling. Though I think Truth might not be entirely sane by the time of the games, especially Halo 3. Maybe he came to believe his own lies.

There is so much backstory in these games, they can never include it all, so its gonna seem a little fragmented. I loved the halo 3 storyline because its a part of the story as a whole. My favorite thing about halo 3 was the whole back and forth between the gravemind and cortana.
