I can't explain real well... it's like... proof that he has at least a sliver of humanity in him. That's why Midna was so amazed. That's the way I see it, anyway.

Well seeing as how far he fell, and also implying that there could be bits of frozen water along the river running throughout Hyrule, he could have broke through the ice and into the water, therefore still surviving, but breaking off part of one of his horns in the process, which he most likely fell on. Or he could have fell on one of the Scaffolding's if one were to be low enough.

@kiwi15499 There is a river below the Bridge of Eldin. You can't see it from the top of the bridge (it looks all dark from there), but the boat rental ride is below the Bridge of Eldin. At one point at the boat ride you can see the bridge above you. Must've hit his horn on one of the rocks, though...
