Funny thing is, people in my family have been in some of the events in this video. My great-grandpa was at Vimy Ridge with the 73rd Northumberland Light Infantry and my grandpa was at Juno Beach.
@flash46196 Manitoba and the provinces of the Maritimes are have-not provinces and have historically had high rates of poverty. You tend to see higher enrollment in the Armed Forces in impoverished areas which is one reason why there was a proportionately greater representation in the military from these areas.
The part about John Osborn is incorrect. They were fighting on a hill rather than inside. It's disappointing that they weren't accurate about the details on that. It may seem somewhat trival but the facts matter.
yes, they have named one of the only two Lancasters still flying after him, I had a chance to walk thru the plane and it would have been quite something to try and get out of it while on fire quite an amazing tale, one of few Ukranian Canadians awarded the VC
@sdgdsgs yeah. By the time Mynarski jumped, his entire leg and part of his parachute was on fire. he died of burns shortly after landing. The burning Landcaster hit a tree on its way down, which snapped the tail end off the plane, throwing Brophy free just before the crash.
God save our Canadian cousins, there should be more about what they did as a nation in WW2 such as their invaluable help during the Battle of Britain, Hong Kong, D Day etc... anyone would think the USA won WW2 on thier own!
@walkertexasranger33 Most likely because WW1 was the war to end all wars. WW1 was also a very ugly war, trench warfare that was mostly a stalemate. As for WW2 the Brits and Americans want to take all the credit for that one. I have no respect for Churchill and the attitude he had towards Canadian, Ausie, and New Zealand troops.
Winnipeg sure has it's problems, but seeing Valour Rd and Hearing of Sgt. Tommy Prince, Sgt. Mj. John Osborne is honestly one of the few shreds of hope for this city. I couldn't be prouder of these men, and all the men from Winnipeg who have fought, died, came back wounded and continue to fight today.
I know what you mean. But I think there is a lot of hope for Winnipeg - people dwell too much on the negatives and not enough on the positives or how we can contribute to making it better. Apparently there is a film about Tommy Prince coming out in 2011 called Prince of the Devils with Adam Beach playing Tommy Prince. It also has a decent budget. Can't wait. A good role model and not just for Aboriginal people but for everyone in this country.
I respect what you think but i am not living in the US out of choice. You see for i moved to the US when I was nine years old with my familiy. I am still living in the US with my parents but I have recently been accepted by th university of Toronto and will be moving back though.
Even if I was an expatriate I would still have the right to love and have affection for my motherland.
I'm a Canadian living in the U.S. right now and many Americans claim that Canada has no military and has not fought in a single war and that we are just a bunch of cowards who do nothing but drink beer and play hockey. It really pisses me off.
this prob comes from the fact that as a whole, canada would rather drink beer and play hockey rather than invading other countries looking for ''wepons of mass destruction''. 2ndly, at least canadians can point out our own country on a map
That is true, who wouldn't want to play hockey and drink over fighting a war. However, Canada has always had a military presence in numerous wars including WWI, WWII, and still has a military presence in Afghanistan, Guinea-Bissau, and off the East coast of Africa.
@muffin43223 the second point also ties in closely with war as well since you don't want to accidentally bomb the wrong country or I don't know bomb your own allies *cough cough*

It is not well known that Tommy Prince was recommended... and likey would have received the Croix de Guerre, but the messenger was killed.
He is truly among Canada's greatest hero's and there are none greater.
