Look closely for the guy who takes shelter in the doorway of the grey building on the other side of the street. He walked so calmly away yet was so close to death!
@Barkditch glad to know someone understands. Reading these comments, and all they're doing is talking about the stupid car. Someone died in that building. Who cares about a car? If it was damaged, insurance can pay for a new one, but you can't replace that persons life, and that persons family would so much rather see that person here today, than a car.
People, this is just stupid to say "nooo, Japan was woorse" or "nooo, NZ was wooorse". This is just plain stupid. As long as this is disaster it does not mean how much it shaked. It was very bad in both cases.
I hate earthquakes. I lived through a strong one that lasted 40 seconds. It seemed like an eternity and you felt so helpless, you knew no human could help you and we were all on the same boat. Its the feeling of having no control whatsoever that is the worst. I could die in any way but I dont think I would feel so much dispair as I did when I was int he middle of the quake.
@jocaman0111 you think this is something to laugh about? tell you what, i was in this quake, as were my friends and family, and this city lost 182 souls on this day. So keep your insensitive ignorant comments to yourself!
So don't compare the quakes unless you lived through both of them, because I would swear on my life you would be sh*t scared too if you lived through that.
And the aftershocks are still continuing. Whole suburbs have been abandoned because of this earthquake, most riverside suburbs will no longer exist. Liquefaction destroyed people's homes and belongings, and they were left to shelter in welfare centres. I was alone for this earthquake, in my house, which is now going to be demolished. It was the scariest moment of my life, and afterwards, all you could hear was house alarms going off, and the road flooding with silt and mud.
@ralphiemoo I'm so with you. i was alone too, at my house. scariest day of my life. not knowing where my kids were, or my friends and other family members. luckily my house survived! I'll never forget the sound of the sirens and alarms, or the sight of the water flooding the streets either.
Don't try to compare earthquakes, because the Richter scale measures how much energy is released during a quake, not how violent it is. If you look it up, the 22nd of February quake, the one you see here, had the second largest peak ground acceleration ever recorded, beaten only by the Japanese earthquake, but the ground acceleration was at the fault and not on land, so no one felt it. 182 people died in this quake, someone was probably killed by the falling masonry off that building.
Reports are coming in of a large earthquake that has just hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch, liquefaction in some suburbs, power outages and phone lines jammed.
I was thinking... "the world is ending".... seeing lightings going from the ground to the sky because of the energy and static released by the earth, seeing the ground moving like is liquid.. but by far the thing I'll never forget..... is the sound of the ground itself..... best wishes to you guys, hope this event never hapend to you again... greetings from Chile.
28 seconds...... I dont want to be a jerk but... Im from Chile, and bein in a 3 minutes 8.8 Earthquake really changes the way u look at things, BUT... this is not a sismic country so I can only imagine how it must felt.... I know that in Chiles last big quake, I didnt though I was going to die, first 40 seconds I knew it wasnt gonna stop or drop intensity, and at first I was exited kuz my generation (25 yo) had never experienced a real earthquake... but past the minute.... fck "im gonna die"
@valderramajeria yea but it also depends on how far away and how deep the quake is most quakes are 30 to 100+km deep and 100's of km/ miles away this 1 was like 5km / 2.5miles deep and only 10km / 5 miles or so from the city so it feels alot bigger the whole of new zealand is covered in the ring of fire like japan the country is basically 1 huge fault line here in upper hutt where i live i have a fault line running right under my house :( it is scary when u hear them coming
@valderramajeria and yea i been seeing alot on the news about the chile earthquakes and im sorry for u and ur country we know wat it's like to go through that stuff and it aint nice new zealand gets ruffley 30,000 quakes per year most thow are so small u cant feel them but had a big 1 hit my house couple of weeks ago and had 2 small ones hit my house this week wile i was cooking dinner well peace to u and my thoughts go out to u and all countries that have to suffer this fate
@EchoOfHope He survived, he had to go to the hospital for evaluation but nothing was wrong with him, if you look close enough you can see he got into the entrance way.
@crysta555: It's only the city centre which is a ghost town (though it's more like a big construction site; lots of demolition going on). And some of the eastern suburbs. But the rest of the city seems to be functioning just fine without the city core... most of our shopping malls are okay, and a lot of businesses have relocated. Yes, there's a big insurance bill, and we did spend a few weeks to a month without power and water, but things are surprisingly normal now.
I saw on another video that Christ church is a ghost town. Most buildings are no longer inhabitable now. My prayers to you and to Japan and to Chile and Haiti. I'm sure in America with our quakes 3 times higher than usual now will be next. God help us all.
The christchurch earthquake might have only lasted for 20 seconds but it still far exceeded building codes of any city. The peak ground acceleration (the measurement of how violent the shaking is) was 2.2g. In comparison at fukushima the PGA measured just 0.18g, Haiti's quake was 0.5g. Its like shaking a piece of paper, the piece of paper shakes a lot but it doesn't require as much energy as something like shaking a car, the car requires you to exert more energy to move it but it shakes less.
why are people comparing fukn earthquakes! its not about how long they last for that earthquake was terrifying people died mayb not alot but who gives a shit stop comparing u people make me sick
@TheJKTOMIC This was actually the right thing to do - he pushed himself against the building instead of trying to out run it. He walks away from it moments after this video ends (the whole thing was played on the news ages ago)
@Metsada007 You ignorant fuck. Do some research before you comment. This quake was right below the cities feet not hundreds of kilometers away. No city can withstand it. The power felt by it was larger than any of the other earthquakes around due to its position. 'Richter' scale means nothing essentially.
If the quake in Japan was god's doing then I suppose this was Thor being pissed off at all the people believing in someone else but him... Religious people do say to dumbest shit.
Amazing footage! With so many video cameras and digital cameras that can shot video in the world today, along with all the security cameras that run 24/7, we are going to have front row seats nowadays to the kind of amazing events that only first-hand witnesses ever had before.....with the BIG dfference being that we are not in any kind of danger whatsoever.....except for maybe becoming addicted to watching this kind of stuff.
@platinumsalamander Nice audi? That's the sort of comment I'd expect from either a 6 year old with no understanding of what just happened or a shallow, attention seeking cretin. Grow up.
@biggerThinking1 - actually you are both wrong and inaccurate. You cannot compare the two quakes, both were entirely different. The Christchurch quake had a 'trampoline' effect which caused so much lethal damage. This was equivalent to 4 x 6.3 quakes, all at the same time at the same place. Fortunately, NZ does not have nuclear power stations so that damage was avoided. Nor was there a tsunami, which caused most of the damage, and deaths, in Japan. Its not a competition to suffer the most.
Scary - but not a patch on what the poor japanese suffered on March 11 - their quake was magnitude 9 - thats more than 100 times more powerful and lasted a full 2 minutes at peak shaking - then of course a monster tsunami 3 stories high that penetrated a massive 10km inland from the coast - the entire country shifted 2.5 metres to the east and 20,ooo died - it was truly an epic disaster.
@superrevivalcom (before I start, I just wanna say that this isnt an angry reply.) I live in Chch, and was in the CBD when this quake hit. I was 4storeys up, and I can tell you now that noone I've spoken to thought at first "ooh cool, powerful quake...", the large majority of us were shit-scared immediately. I was trapped behind auto-lock doors after the quake, and some in my building were injured. Believe me, a day does not go by when you look at the building you're in & worry.
@superrevivalcom We have been watching Deep Impact. This movie has some very strange parallels to what is happening now. It remarkably mirrors our current situation with comet Elenin. In the movie the comet is called Ele and it stands for Extinction Level Event. The name Ele was used as sort of a cover or subliminal message. Elijah Woods's character is named Leo and he was the first to discover the comet. In real life Leonid Elenin discovers Elenin.
@jukio02 Most of these buildings were built BEFORE they started seeing an earthquake occuring , and most of the buildings codes were good, it was because they were brick and stone, and those dont flex with earthquake resulting in them falling over Or falling apart :)
@gleerox345 I did not realize it was a normal building I thought it was a Church, I did not realize there was such a place actually Called Christ Church. Ignorant statement on my part.
I will still call a being who supposedly exists and has the ability to do anything and everything yet NOT STOP such events.. a Jerk.. I fail to see how that is not a Jerk move. I would have done what ever I could to prevent such a thing if I knew it were going to happen, and I'm just your average Joe.
@Subfightr This statement has been used over and over again. "If God is so powerful, why can't he do/prevent X?" God doesn't intervene with human life, and people need to stop giving God human emotions, if God does exist, God would be and think so much differently than us, so far infact that we can't even begin to predict what he can do.
@CptCool2 Then why bother worshiping a God that does not care or is incapable of caring for it's followers/creations? Is such a God even worth worship? I agree, a God does not intervene with human life. I also agree with you that it such a being did exist it could quite well be incomprehensible. None the less, not worth worship.
@Subfightr Gee you're ignorant. Earthquakes are caused by the movement of earth plates, it's been going on for millions of years. Blame the earth if you're looking for something to blame.
@SkylineGT10 I am well aware of plate tectonics and earthquakes are an unfortunate result of this natural process. I don't blame a god, I don't even believe in any. It was a childish smart ass comment meant to poke at the notion that God is all knowing and all powerful yet is incapable of preventing events like this or saving lives of the innocent. Congrats on using "you're" as opposed to "your" like so many others, and double congrats on your knowledge of plate tectonics, and calling me out.
sure i saw some poor bloke walk up to the building across the street before it lands on him:(

@jukio02 right, and boats? dick
stopbeingnasty 8 months ago

Subfightr 10 months ago
@Subfightr This statement has been used over and over again. "If God is so powerful, why can't he do/prevent X?" God doesn't intervene with human life, and people need to stop giving God human emotions, if God does exist, God would be and think so much differently than us, so far infact that we can't even begin to predict what he can do.
CptCool2 10 months ago
@CptCool2 Then why bother worshiping a God that does not care or is incapable of caring for it's followers/creations? Is such a God even worth worship? I agree, a God does not intervene with human life. I also agree with you that it such a being did exist it could quite well be incomprehensible. None the less, not worth worship.
Subfightr 10 months ago
@Subfightr Gee you're ignorant. Earthquakes are caused by the movement of earth plates, it's been going on for millions of years. Blame the earth if you're looking for something to blame.
SkylineGT10 8 months ago
@SkylineGT10 I am well aware of plate tectonics and earthquakes are an unfortunate result of this natural process. I don't blame a god, I don't even believe in any. It was a childish smart ass comment meant to poke at the notion that God is all knowing and all powerful yet is incapable of preventing events like this or saving lives of the innocent. Congrats on using "you're" as opposed to "your" like so many others, and double congrats on your knowledge of plate tectonics, and calling me out.
