Thank god someone explained the "Chileshe" part. It is a common name among Ababemba of Zambia. Can be male/female/last name. There has to be a link somewhere between the usages in Zambia and in South Africa. I listen to Luambo "Franco" Makiadi go deep into Kikongo on some of his songs and I hear Zulu.
the language might be xhosa. my mother tongue is kinya-rwanda. Rwanda is thousands miles away from SA to the north but I understand what Hugh is singing about. abo bita ba kafula na bo ni abantu... the ones they call "kafula" are human beings too... From SA to cameroun and kenya, bantu languages are related. There is a song "ingwe-mabala" by Myriam Makeba about "a spotted leopard". "Ingwe y'amabara" in kinyarwanda... many other examples... african history can be learnt through linguistics.
Before we all start bashing South Afrika, we have to be hinest that tribalism/xenophobia is rife in Afrika! The self-righteous indignation of hypocrites is ridiculous. Even during the apartheid years South Afrika had Afrikans from the neighbouring countries en masse. There are real problems of a socio-economic nature faced by South Afrikans. South Afrika treats immigrants better than most Afrikan countries. They get jobs, houses and all other rights in South Afrika. Many commit crimes, why?
Fantastic song. I did not know what it meant but my father would sing to me when I was a boy. My father having lived in South Africa as a young man. Hugh was his favorite. He must have missed South Africa. Love the song too.
what does this song mean? my name is chileshe and i am curious as hell to find out what this song means it's not every day that u stumble across a song with your first name as the title
This music speaks to my soul. I cannot put into words how it makes me feel about Africa and its people - a country that I love yet makes me feel so sad.
The song and its lyrics speaks a lot of volume to both the hearer and listener especially those privilege to comprehend the language. Xenophobic disposition of Blacks in South Africa needs to be jettison for a new world order. The neigbours principle is the key thing. Lets love without giving a condition because God is love.
no dear that is not even remotely conected to what this song is about.....it is what zimempress says.....about name calling, tsotsi's stabing ppl and xynophobia...telling us all to refrain from that kinda behaviour and grow up!
I got interested when I saw the name of the song, in Zambia Chileshe is a name, it is given to both Boys and Girls among the Bemba speaking people. The song is beautiful.
ungabayeki baku biz'ikirimani! no kwere!, no kafula! shoshosho! bra hughzey!greetings to all my SA's we'll get it down 2010 haaa!ekse cape town in here?
Oh, and by the way... thank you for such an excellent video. In the US, we know Hugh Masekela for Grazin' in the Grass, but this is so much more wonderful!
The loose translation ....it talks about tolerance... " dont call other people names they are people like yourself .. Boer man dont call other people kafffir they are people like you" e.t.c hope it helps
I can imagine FELA AND HUGH INTENSE!!Yo mama!!and MIRIAM MAKEBA, ANGELIQUE, and just for show my boy DOUG SAGA FAROT LINO VERSACE just to showcase handsome AFRICAN MEN!! THE thought is orgasmic!!!
umuntu engazonda omnye umunt'omnyama kambe? umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu . Africans need to realise we are one , especially southern Africans - you need to tolerate other people and tribes. Zim helped PAC and ANC when amabhunu were in control eZansi
How long did it us take to realise the fact that sonke singabantu....Dunkie bafowethu nabo my Sister..I reside here in New York .Now my best friends and sisters who help me to get by in this Mabhunuland are from Zim and allover Africa....Ignorance is a disease which after all potrays its symptoms in disgrace and humiliation.Asiyekeni ukukhombana nge minwe..We are all the same..laba abantu esibabiza ngamagama they know much more than us..aaagaaa ubuqaba abuphele sizwe esimpisholo!!!!
Amamakirimani, amakhafola, amakwerekwere ama immigrants all that rubbish please lets respect oher people and stop all the prejudice particularly blacks and whites in sout africa!
good music bra hugh, people never appreciate other nations until they too have been foreign in other counties then they will know the pain of being called all types of silly names
my grandparents live in ludzeludze,my dad in botswana. so i know both places very well. the pain of being called all types of names is very painful. i have never experienced it directly but i have seen it being done to other people. people dont understand that everybody prefares to be in their own countries but the situation in other countries does not permit.
Eternal gratitude to the people of South Africa

If Mama Makeba is the soul of southern Africa, then Masekela is its spirit! Deep, soulful, rich southern African rhythms...
