This is quite magnificent. Perfect combination of a fantastic song and even more fantastic voices. The harmonies created are truly sensational and second to none - from the high tenor line to the low resonance of the bass and the tuning is 'on the money' from beginning to end. I truly cannot immagine a better male voice sound. Beautiful!
my schools select choir is singing this some and it is just amazing how a bunch of high shcool students can poor our emotions in to a song this chalenging and beutifull and makeit soud just amazing
Superb example of how the genius of a song is totally revealed by stripping it down to its barest elements.......lyrics and melody alone; performed with perfect pitch and clarity........without the addded and oftentimes excessive spice of studio production and synthetics. The Kings Singers are the ultimate in unplugged artistic excellence.
@samfraserbaxter2 Yep. You buy it from their site or a regular music store 0 it's in a few of their anthologies, and also available as a single song. they do tend to market regular choral (ie SATB) versions though, as opposed to male sextet so be careful to check before you buy. But the SATB a divisi of this is v good, and TRICKY to get good I guarantee it :/
... oh dear... it reminds me to my daughter i haven't seen for weeks... me and your mother broke up but keep in mind that you are the greatest present which has been given to me untill yet in my life... LOVE and MSS YOU
Just amazing...when a small group of singers blends well and is perfectly in tune, as they are, it creates an amazing resonance, an almost ringing quality, which to my ears is one of the most beautiful things that can be experienced in this lifetime. I have sung this arrangement and listened to it hundreds of times, and it chokes me up every time. I don't especially like Billy Joel, but this is a truly genuine, heartfelt piece of music and is by far the best thing he's written.
I am listening to this while I edit my 2nd book, but can't see the words because I have tears rolling down my face... How beautiful the singing, harmonies and absolutely anything sung by the Kings Singers... Sheer bliss.. *sighs* :0)x
@deJaneiro746 ... Hello there... I write Romantic Fiction 'with a twist'.. My 1st is already in print, it was published in 2007..Reviving a Rose and the 2nd is called The Thistle and the Rose... Still trying to find the funding to get it into print... Grrr..

i sang this song once for choir in highschool, and fell in love with it.... and this has to be the most beautiful arrangement.... has a whole new meaning to me now, tho, as a Marine wife and mother of two. The lyrics just take on a whole new meaning...... thanks for sharing!!!
@psychlgclwarfare I know exactly what you mean... As a silver-haired Nanny.. This makes me think not only of rocking my children to sleep... but now my Grandchildren too... *sniff sniff*... I'm such a soppy soul... :0)x
It amazes me that this was written, arranged and harmonized too, by the same guy who wrote "Only the Good Die Young" and "It's My Life." Billy Joel is our modern day Brahms.
Check out Danny "daniscool99" Fong's multitracked version featuring Brodie Cuff!
The King's Singers may top them in pure singing skill, but these two guys put much more feeling into it. Plus, I like the arrangement they sing better.
this is the first King's Singers song i ever heard, and it will always hold a special place in my heart because it introduced me to such an amazing group! thanks for the post, and long live the King's Singers!
Ich liebe dieses Lied! Ich singe es meinem Baby auch vor, es hat einen wundervollen Text. Und die Kingssingers sind natürlich die besten!! Danke für diesen Beitrag.
...one can't help wishing to be a little child again...to have our parents tucking us into bed with this lullaby song...my father singing the 3 lower voices and my mother the three higher ones...yes, at the same time :o)))
...in fact, it is quite easy to sing like this...it's like making a sculpture...you take a ton of marble and "hammer out" what is superfluous, leaving what is essential, the sculpture...and then you polish...and polish...and polish...the problem is to know what to leave...not to mention that you still need to polish...easy, huh ?...after 30 years, I'm still staring at the ton of stone, a hammer in my hand :o)))
the soprano is a voice. counter tenor is a voice type. so it is not wrong to say " I love the soprano" as it is not wrong to say that he is a countertenor.
A countertenor is a male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of a contralto, mezzo-soprano, or (less frequently) a soprano, usually through use of falsetto, or more rarely the normal or modal voice. it doesn't really matter what line he reads, it is a soprano line, but the man is not a soprano, he is a countertenor. "I love the soprano" makes no sense, because there are no sopranos in this ensemble, there are countertenors.
Actually, four part harmony for what we call SATB used to be written to include countertenors or castrati, since women weren't generally trained or able to perform.
I want to know the same thing. This version is louder than the other YouTube recording, so I don't have to turn my speakers all the way up, but the ringing detracts from the quality.

Actually there is no "soprano" - the soprano sound is produced by two counter-tenors (David Hurley and Robin Tyson) singing in falsetto.

Thats a misconception. The counter-tenors are not singing in falsetto. Thats why they're called counter-tenors...thats where their range is.
