Solon Gray came to KIRO-7 in Seattle after his stint in Syracuse. Solon anchored the noon news in Seattle from the late 70's through the late 80's/early 90's. He also anchored the weekend news for a period of time as well as the brand new KIRO Morning News in the 80's.
Now Channel 9 has WSTMs old calls, WSYR. Their newscasts were known as Eyewitness News for years after this clip aired, but it has been known as NewsChannel 9 since about the early 90s.
It's interesting to see the similarities in stations owned by the same group. A video from WCMH-TV from about the same time uses the same font and a similar news desk. Both stations were owned by Outlet. Check out the video at
Of course nowadays there are those of us that might care to know what's going on in Europe anyway! In those pre-Weather Channel/Internet days, the best you could ever find out about that would be in the newspaper the next day.
I remember Solon here in Seattle too as well, he was on KIRO TV (CBS) in the late 70's and early 80's.

They've been NC9 since '93.
I liked their Eyewitness news set, which was a table. The newsroom was the backdrop, with a detailed wall.
I like their current set just as much. This is a dedicated set, and therefor much more flexible (it even has a kitchen!)

Did Steve go right from WLS to WNYS?
casey1027 3 years ago
No, Steve briefly went back to WXLT in Sarasota to lick his wounds from a failed attempt at the 3rd largest TV market.

Ah, but Steve would more than make up for it in a few years when he would eventually land gainful employment in the bay area, working for KRON.

this has to be the worlds most depressing news intro...suprisingly

Back then Syracuse was a big TV market. You can clearly see the difference between then and now. Much more professional local news back then.

I agree with you!! I miss my Syracuse!!!

Must've been after Mr. Gray's stint co-anchoring with Doug Ramsey at WPIX in New York (which he did from 1971-c.'73)
