I used to feed in a separate tub, but it was too stressful on my animals, and pretty much ineffective once I got my boa, as soon as we got one half in the other half was already out. Both my RTB and Ball Python get fed in their tanks, and are no more snappish/bitey than they are anyway, which is not at all.

I feed my retic in her cage, and I handle her atleast once every two days for 30 minutes. She's never been aggressive to me at all. The key is scenting. When I have her rat, I'll set it on top of her cage in a box. She usually gets the idea after a few minutes and comes out and cruises around. Then I just drop it in the cage and it's all over. never been bit, done this for years.

Complete myth ..... its much safer to feed granted you try to not touch them for that day... I have a Burmese python that I always feed in his vision cage he is the sweetest snake ever. Doesn't hiss or strike... I don't recommended this but I touch him an hour after he eats he's calm and ready to come out ... he's only 1yr 7 months old and only 6'8... and my female boa exact same thing except she's 7'9
so wouldn't it get snappy when putting it back from this temp feeding enclosure back to it's home, if not snappier since it just ate? Not to mention the undue stress on the animal and moving it with a full belly. Honestly this wives tale makes no sense. If you are opening its enclosure often for feeding, cleaning, water changes, photo shoots, handling sessions and not just 1 time a week for feeding, it will not associate every time the cage opens with food. @mack1time its not that they recognize your hand is that being that they just ate and if you did it right they are satisfied and rather slowed down you can safely move them back to their normal enclosure. and dealing with a snake being snappy in it feeding enclosure is better than it thinking you changing the water bowl, reaching into handle it , etc is you bring it food.

@mack1time I use to have a Burmese Python that I raised from an egg. When I first started feeding her live mice she did see my hand as food reaching down in there because I made the mistake of feeding her in her cage. Well when she started getting bigger, after I corrected my mistake of course, after she ate I would have to pick her up to place her back in her home but she never had a problem being handled after she ate so she got use to me carrying her around and never regurgitated
@mack1time I wouldn't handle her as much after eating just to not upset her belly. But she was the sweetest Burm you could meet. She ended up being protective over me which was awesome!. But I went on a trip to FL and was stuck longer then expected in a hotel :( I didnt know I was going to get stuck there and the hotel manager called some people about her, Burms aren't really allowed as pets in FL without a permit. They took her.
@mack1time Aside from that long story you are very right. never feed a snake in the enclosure it lives in because it will associate your hand for a meal mainly because its use to you sticking your hand in there when you have food so it won't hesitate to grab you.
@mack1time actually bigjavo is correct, when feeding a snake you need to place the snake in a separate enclosure or else he will be alot more "snappy" and here's why, snakes have shit for vision, so they only "see" through their highly developed sense of smell coming from their tongues, and when you feed in their home, the scent of the feeders collects within the home tank causing the snake to only sense food instead of sensing the hand that feeds him hince the false increase in aggression.

As long as it's done responsibly and the prey is never left unsupervised, feeding live is no different then feeding frozen/thawed. I used to feed in a separate tub, but it was too stressful on my animals, and pretty much ineffective once I got my boa, as soon as we got one half in the other half was already out. Both my RTB and Ball Python get fed in their tanks, and are no more snappish/bitey than they are anyway, which is not at all.
"Tank aggression" has nothing to do with food, it has to do with them just not liking you in "their" space. It's to tell you "Get out!!" or "Leave me alone!!"

I feed my retic in her cage, and I handle her atleast once every two days for 30 minutes. She's never been aggressive to me at all. The key is scenting. When I have her rat, I'll set it on top of her cage in a box. She usually gets the idea after a few minutes and comes out and cruises around. @mack1time i was always taught and the procedure used when i was reptile handler at a pet shop i worked or was you always take them to a separate feeding tank and after they have finished eating and re adjusted their jaws you put them back into their normal enclosure this way it only associates the feeding tank with food. and i have had the same sentiment echoed by experts and aspca members countless times

@mack1time its not that they recognize your hand is that being that they just ate and if you did it right they are satisfied and rather slowed down you can safely move them back to their normal enclosure. and dealing with a snake being snappy in it feeding enclosure is better than it thinking you changing the water bowl, reaching into handle it , etc is you bring it food.

@mack1time I use to have a Burmese Python that I raised from an egg. When I first started feeding her live mice she did see my hand as food reaching down in there because I made the mistake of feeding her in her cage. Well when she started getting bigger, after I corrected my mistake of course, after she ate I would have to pick her up to place her back in her home but she never had a problem being handled after she ate so she got use to me carrying her around and never regurgitated

@mack1time I wouldn't handle her as much after eating just to not upset her belly. But she was the sweetest Burm you could meet. She ended up being protective over me which was awesome!. But I went on a trip to FL and was stuck longer then expected in a hotel :( I didnt know I was going to get stuck there and the hotel manager called some people about her, Burms aren't really allowed as pets in FL without a permit. They took her.

@mack1time Aside from that long story you are very right. never feed a snake in the enclosure it lives in because it will associate your hand for a meal mainly because its use to you sticking your hand in there when you have food so it won't hesitate to grab you.

@mack1time very well said mate i tried feeding my boa out of her enclosure and when i tried yo put her
back she kept trying to bite me yet she is never like then when not in attack mode
so now i feed in her tank and she is not nippy

@mack1time actually bigjavo is correct, when feeding a snake you need to place the snake in a separate enclosure or else he will be alot more "snappy" and here's why, snakes have shit for vision, so they only "see" through their highly developed sense of smell coming from their tongues, and when you feed in their home, the scent of the feeders collects within the home tank causing the snake to only sense food instead of sensing the hand that feeds him hince the false increase in aggression.
