I'd just like to say that there are two different words, here. Goth and Gothic. They are different things. Goth is the trend of black clothing, satanic-style imagery, chains, studs, etc. It's a sub-trend of punk, as Emo is of Goth. Gothic, on the other hand, is different; Gothic is to do with the literature (17th - 18th centuries) and architecture (12th - 16th centuries) of certain times.

Generally, Gothic things include literature like Edgar Allen Poe and Percy Shelley, and architecture such as the Kölner Dom (Germany) or Salisbury Cathedral (England). The Goth trend probably came from fashion such as that of the Victorian era (during certain Gothic revivals) whereby people mourned in full black for around 6 months constantly. This could have something to do with it.

However, Gothic and Goth are different in metal; Goth is usually used when referring to black metal, such as Dimmu Borgir or Immortal; whereas Gothic is used when referring to Gothic Rock/Doom bands, such as Paradise Lost, Bauhaus, Draconian and Theatre of Tragedy. So no, ToT are not a Goth group; they are a Gothic group.

Goth shouldn't be a "personality" or a "religion" or a form of rebellion. Instead it is an art and music movement, as well as "finding beauty in the darkness". Yes, it can be a style of dress, but that doesn't mean it's a code of who you are. If you choose to "go Goth" as they say, then it shouldn't be because of wanting to stick it to your parents or looking for a girlfriend or a boyfriend, but instead, you find that you like the art, the music, and the idea of it.
