As noted in the first sentence of the description, it is sounded daily at noon. Three other towns in that vicinity conduct noon tests: Turner (Darley Dual-Head), Mill City (Darley Model 5), and Dallas (STH-10). Since nearly all of those towns have sirens, there may be others I'm not aware of.
If I drive to Silverton this saturday and be where this siren is at noon, will I hear it? Just wanna make sure, cause silverton is kinda far from where I live.
Please note that "MrCode3Diecast" is claiming this video as his own, as well as numerous others. He lives in upstate New York and has nothing to do with the making of this video.
myself and a captain from the fire dist. modified this due to the city manager having a problem with the loudness in city hall. wish it still rang 3 times for fires, those were the cool days!!!
90% of the sound comes from the ports on the sides of the siren, not the horns. The horns are designed to accelerate the speed of the air entering the siren, not to amplify it. The current setup has not made the siren any quieter, but it makes it collect rainwater and will eventually destroy it. Mt. Angel just shut off their siren after complaints from residents in that new building across the street. Why both towns don't just move their sirens to the fire stations, I don't know.
I am getting tired of sirens, church bells, other traditional sounds of American life being forced into silence by self-centered, aging baby boomers who don't want their beauty sleep disturbed.
i completely agree. this siren has been part of silverton history for a long time. they have talked about moving it to the fire station to comply with the city's new code red system but the fire station is located on the edge of silverton's nw city limits and no one would be able to hear it. so they are looking at placing more around the edges of city limit. i know it doesn't make sense.
I remember when I was growing up and hearing this horn at the city pool, at the park, even at the high school during lunch. It was always fun to see people who didn't live in Silverton freak out at noon when the horn went off. :)
lmao i live in silverton! i hear this bad boy go off every day!

Silverton isn't too far from where I live. When does this get tested? I'll have to drive down there sometime and film a test myself.

Get there a few minutes early. For a while they were sounding it at 11:55, possibly to avoid conflicts with some nearby electronic church bells.

It looks like a sausage. :)
Nice video.

Mmm! Saaauuusage!
That makes sense, since there are many sausage makers in the area and the Mount Angel Oktoberfest is only four miles from this siren.

It reminds me of a Texas longhorn. If I had an old Cadillac, I'd mount it on the hood and use it for a horn.

Not surprised it is a very old model. Can this be heard at Silver Falls?
campanilefreak 3 years ago
I doubt that it could be heard that far.
Audinos 3 years ago
You're probably right. I just know that Silver Falls is near Silverton, and you said on clear days it could be heard from several miles away.
Thanks!
campanilefreak 3 years ago
Looks like it should be on the front of Boss hog's Cadillac.

haha... the people that tried to "modify" the siren arent very smart
