No volume, no malice, no stage presence, and she barely pronounces a single word of the libretto. She should have never accepted Medea in 1989. Surprisingly, despite some lack of low notes and vocal heft, her earlier Medea in 1976/77 is not bad at all. Sorry kids, Callas it was and Callas it remains!

Pero bueno, ella misma es la que alimenta con su actitud la gran tropa de duros críticos que tiene.
Not her type of role at all. I don't think she's ever been capable of the kind of anger you'd need to know to act that role. Somewhere I read some critic, name forgotten, commenting on the same thing with another role, also forgotten - some line that's supposed to be sung with great force and venom - writing that he'd had waitresses in New York ask him if he wanted another cup of coffee with more apparent malice than she managed to convey. Probably true.

Unfortunately Callas died some time now and if no one "dares" to sing this opera, the work of Cherubini will be lost forever. So cease to be stupid.

I agree with DanBarthy. Caballe's voice is beautiful but she shouldn't have gone near the role of Medea (I love Carreras, he's gorgeous)
