My dad surfed in the mid 60's before shipping out to Vietnam, when he came back he only surfed a little bit he came home with sever PTSD. Then sustained a major head injury in 1980, by the time I had started surfing he could only give me pointers great pointers though!
I just wish I could have got him out in the ocean one last time..R.I.P. Dad Awesome surfer and Marine. Dec 24 2011.
my first board was a Bing. I learned at Stinson beach then moved East.
Bing, a Phil Edwards Hobie, A Dora 'Cat', then a couple of Bahnes, a Surfboards Hawaii..then I was buying boards at lawn sales cause I had a family. I'm still out there. If I get two rides a session: I'm a happy camper.
But I was never as good as this.
Nice riding. Thanks for posting this kid. Bringsback a great style
this is good to see how we did things back when,if only kids could Ditch all the high tech stuff they cant breathe without these days,phones, credit,designer labels,and bullshit image,and grab an old beat up board,cut off jeans,and a few bucks for a hamburger and coke or shake and just hang out all day and have fun surfing on the beach or where ever,thats how to do it and go home with the best day ever for a few bucks without all the brainwashing corperates trying to tell and sell you rubbish.
Summer '68 had some massive swells at Malibu. Got to see 12ft surf off second point with Miki Dora and Nat Young out. I was just a kid of 17 and caught some massive ones. Sand was eroded all the way to the wall and everyone was sitting on the sand going up to the lifeguard tower. Several huge swells that summer and then that winter the whole cove filled in with sand. No cove until summer '70.
It's awesome knowing people were there way before our time. I heard the life guard pier off of the Restaurant was burned down on Holloween 1979 and pilings appear when the sand gets washed away. Check out Bangalore Surf, someone finally put the music on Utube
thanks, almost made me cry, I don't regret one single day I ditched work, school etc to go to the beach, didn't get in no magazines, didn't enter a contest, just had pure fun. thanks for reminding me

Great filmed document!
I think the Malibu footage is from 1969, based on the boards being ridden.
No leashes, no longboards. Enough waves for everybody...wow!

Happy the Man, and he alone
He who can call today his own;
He who, secure within, can say,
Tomorrow, do thy worst, for I've lived
today.

No wetsuits, no leashes, no rashguards. Real surfers! I was 21 in 1968. Thanks for the memories.
