Question? Just started learning acoustic. I was taught to keep the hand on the neck a claw shape. I see many, and in this video, people put there thump close to the E string. Is it proper? Is it okay to play that way by not keeping your thump on the back of the neck?
First off, it's "thumb" not "thump". If you don't start saying "thumb" in reference to your opposable digit, I'm gonna "thump" you on the head.
Now as for your question, it is correct posture to keep your "thumb" on the center of the back of the guitar neck. This is a classical hand posture. However, alot of people get lazy with this as it can be difficult, so their "thumb" begins to creep over the top to help their fingers reach their mark.
yeah man, it's fine if your thumb isn't on the back of the neck, as long as you have support behind the neck.
A lot of guitarists, including myself, are even able to fret notes on the low E string with their thumb wrapped around the fretboard, which adds a huge amount of versatility for your technique . Check out some Jimi Hendrix videos, he practically invented this style.
Well dude, it depends on you... are you playing classic? if you are, its wrong u have to mantain ur thumb on the neck if you are playing by urself and u feel like u are comfortable do it :) good luck!
ok,here is a tip.i am not an expert or something, but try the electric guitar, and then move out to acoustic.you will play very easily with steel strings, cuz they are more lighter, and easier to pick.ooh, and about your hand, keep it at natural as possible,be very gentle.some adults will keep their thumbs to low e beacuse they have very long hands, and can do this without forcing their muscles.I really hope this helps<cheers
if you play acoustic, it's not WRONG to put your thumb close to the E string but try to keep the claw shape whenever possible. classical guitars have wider necks than acoustics so the claw shape has it's roots here. you won't see a classical guitarist playing with his thumb sticking out. keeping the claw shape makes it easier to play the cords without having your fingers end up in weird angles. but as i said, acoustics have narrow necks so it's not a big deal if your thumb sticks out sometimes.
i'd love to hear if americans have ever heard of maton or cole clark guitars, both high end guitar manufacturers, the cole clarks are especially comparable to breedlove instruments in that they generally have more bass response.
does anyone know where i can get a book or something to teach me to play? or do i need to pay for lessons? I think it would be much easier to just get a book that teaches you?
I am new to guitar and mine is a Yamaha FD02 I think. I dunno how much it cost, but it makes a squeaking sound when I switch frets and noise whenever I press or release the strings (all the time). I realize that this is normal, but mine does it all the time and I find it annoying when I am trying to play. Is there anyway to stop this or do I need a better quality guitar?
Go to your local guitar shop and tell them about the squeaking. The problem is probably because of your strings. Ask for some strings that wouldn't squeak as much. I think coated strings don't squeak as much, but I'm not sure.
for acoustic electrics, the finish can be important if it 'picks up' your shirt rubbing against the guitar. so annoying! you'll need a glossy finish if that happens.
Great video, really clear, great tips for buying, one stop shop for everyone who is going to buy a guitar! :D I usually just did point one, but next time I will be going over all the aspects. Once again... Great video!
Whenever you're talking about guitars, you get what you pay for. I would suggest to any beginner not spend a lot of money. Maybe check out a pawn shop for a used one, or even a garage sale. The first acoustic I bought was a Yamaha. It was about $130.00 at the time. It was cheap but it still has a nice sound, and it hasn't lost the tone, (yet). I'd suggest not spending more than around $100.00 if just starting out.
well... for a beginner guitar I would say you might wanna start with something that gives you a good sound.. for the fact that if you wanna start playing you wanna learn with something that helps you develope a good ear to music.. you don't wanna buy a "KIMA" for $100 because you'll get screwed.. and wont learn as good.. LOL... I suggest you start out with like a SIGMA guitar for around $300 to $400... you are guaranteed to develope good playing skills as well as ear skills
The Yamaha APX 500 is a great little acoustic/electric, and there only about 300-400 bucks. I have one and it's a wonderful little guitar, easy to play and good sound plugged or not!
what guitar do you people recommend thats pretty cheap but still has good quality?
i want to learn how to play guitar but i dont want to waste too much money because i wanna see if i really like playing guitar and then buy a better one.
You brought it to the point! My experiances are: Ovation Guitars are made for the stage. Takamine Guitars are great, if you want to play on stage, but want it more natural acoustic tone. Martin Guitars have a great bass, and some of sounds are really typical caractaristicly. Taylor is more like a fresh, powerful and versitile acoustic, the picups, they use are natural (not so much of the piezo picup sound he uses at his yamaha apx. I personally play a Larrivee, and I love everything on it!
If you got a upper end Breedlove and put it next to a Martin Or Taylor it would blow them out of the water. My 500 dollar Breedlove sounds almost as good as my 2,300 dollar Martin. My myrtle wood Breedlove which was 2,700 bucks is THE BEST instrument i have EVER heard.
i love the way you have explained...it was so simple...to put it..in layman terms...this explains how much you know n love playing guitar...kudos to you brother...god bless..hope to get more pointers..
you get what you pay for?, that doesnt always work on guitar specially, you get what you practice for, ive seen guys with thousands of dollars instrumets getting ridiculed by guys with squiers , so buy an expensive guitar if your really know how to play, otherwise stick with beginer istruments, because if youre not a professional dont buy professional instruents, dont fall for market hipe.
lol, u gotta be kidding, you aren't just gonna learn to play guitar from watching a video, you have to practice alot, also age means nothing, joe bonamassa started playing at the age of like 2 or 3
As for Takamine, the common train of thought is that they are great plugged-in (usually have very good electronics), but aren't the best sounding when playing acoustically (not plugged) compared to others in similar price ranges. In my experience, they are built a little too heavily, which will help them last, but won't let the top vibrate freely. So, if you play ampified, good choice, if not, maybe not the best.
so weird ur on bout martin guitars , im irish and im thick and cant blame a guitar but my uncle past and left me a martin 25 r something signed by johnny cash is that a good guitar , , i love it like , just wanna know
i have a Jasmine200 Takamine that i just LOVE to death... i gottit today actually and its from my uncle... i dont know how to play much but i am prolly going to get some lessons... hopefully i get good and learn... my guitar is 15 years ld too by the way (:
check out Wiliiam Cumpiano's website and read his newsletter section, lots of useful stuff there for those buying an acoustic guitar. also check out K&K pickups, they are the best acoustic pickups I've ever heard, and at only £80, they are cheaper than most factory fitted pickups, and they wont make your guitar sound worse. Psychoacoustics also play a part in it. Often people think a gutiar sounds better because of who its made by, and the rep of the company (naming no names)
I'm getting an acoustic guitar and narrowed it down to the Fender DG8s Value pack and the Yamaha Gigmakerer deluxe with the FD01s. Which guitar should I get?
i own a DG-6 fender and martin 000-15 and couple others, and got my fender a guitar store for 75$ used and was really impressed with it stays in tune,i lowered the action slapped some good strings on it sounds pretty good, but yah i never played a DG-8 but i'd go for it...
I have the Yamaha APX 500 Acoustic/Electric Cutaway and I love it. I love the sound and body style. I found it is much easier to handle with the cutaway. The Yamaha is my second guitar and I do not regret buying it.
A cheap guitar will definatly be harder on your fingers since the strings will be farther from the frets. It will cause fatigue and you will not be able to practice as long.the sound quality will be poor and it will not tune properly.
lol i want to learn that its so easy only i need to practic all days and like in 5 days i will learn lol its exelent when he makes a solo with the acustic guitar
lol even the last word he said was "okay" i didnt really get bugged by it tho the lesson was real chill even though i just bought a $60 acoustic at walmart and i see no major problem with that (because it's my 1st guitar)
Ok. The guy really knows 'bout how a good acoustic guitar is made. Being honest, i appreciate the review 'cause sometimes people are so ansious for start playin' that they forget how a guitar really works. 'Course it was a BIG explanation 'bout the wood, but isn't that important in the way that you'll sound??

Some people use their thumb to fret the low e-string, so it gives the rest of your fingers more 'freedom'. so it is definitely okay :)

My Martin OMC 2e is the best guitar I ever played - well worth the money. You should definitely save for one - who needs to eat?

lol even the last word he said was "okay" i didnt really get bugged by it tho the lesson was real chill even though i just bought a $60 acoustic at walmart and i see no major problem with that (because it's my 1st guitar)

you present very nicely, but a few too many ok's. Question, What's your personal favorite? Is rosewood significantly better than mahogany?
Thanks
