Just got caught in one with my buddy while surfing yesterday at Otter Rock, Neport Oregon. One of the scariest moments of my life. Never paddled so hard in my life. We were lucky though people were on the beach to call for help. We paddled parallel to the right along the shore and eventually made it out and caught some waves back into shore. Very luck!!!
I nearly died a few years ago from being caught in a riptide. While drowning I remembered that they said to swim parallel to the shore. I tried it and it only made things worse. So I swam directly against the current and eventually saved myself.
I got pulled into a riptide 2 weeks ago. It was the most terrifying experience of my life. I panicked big time, and honestly, I can not imagine staying calm during that. I went unconscious from taking in too much water and being exhausted, and after I was saved I was brought to the hospital. I needed to see a psychiatrist afterwards for the trauma of the event. What I'm trying to say is: Take rip tides and currents seriously for your own good.
god im so desperate for attention i once faked being carred out by a rip tide to see if anyone would come to my rescue but unfortnatlly no one was paying attention. :(
Me and my mates were at the beach and we were in the water it was dusk and we were all in the water one of my mates said "you guys i think it a rip curent" and me and my friend said " i doubt it" and my mate said " im going to get out" and we were like " chiken" then the waves got more powerfull so me and my mate we were drifting about vilontly saying " i think this is a rip curnt" so we tryed sevral times to get to shore when we got there we shouted then a wave swept us under
Once, I had a dream that I was in a "real life" looking water that was a "pokemon game style" water and i was in that thing going on a piece of wood and it was bringing me in a huge circle... seeing this video just reminded me of that...
I'm horrible at swimming. I almost drowned in a pond at age four, so I never really liked water after that. And after watching this? I don't think I'll step foot near the ocean again. XP
People are stupid. They say "don't panic don't panic". What the hell else are you supposed to do when you're fifteen miles away from the shoreline, being pulled further away every second?
I agree, how are you going to NOT panic? Every second you go in, you go in to another spot. It just gets deeper and deeper. No one has the same perspective from getting pulled into the water. I would say that after a while, no matter who you are - even a lifeguard, will panic. No human being doesn't panic, just because they are not saying out loud, that doesn't mean they don't feel panicked...
He means, if you panic in water theres a high chance you will start to sink. if you stay calm your more likely to float. Just dont think about it even though its a scary feeling
Gee, thanks for uploading this at the END of summer Howcast. I'm sure the people that already went to the beach will find this extremely helpful, if they haven't been washed out to sea yet.
Try not to think about it and relax your muscles. Learn how to swim better so that way in case you are stuck in a riptide, you'll be more confident and won't freak.

How to train an Olympic swimmer-
1: Helicopter drop them into a strong riptide.
2. See if they swim to shore.
3. They didn't, they're dead and now the cops are looking for you for 2nd degree murder.
4. Cry
5. Pack your belonging and go to mexico you just ruined your life.
6. Done.

Step 6: After escaping from a riptide, get yourself a bag of oreos, and enjoy!

Step 6. I'd be more concerned that a big hand and a stick than the rip-current.
