I prefer Noomi so much more than Rooney. Lisbeth Salander is strong and harder than steel and shows as less as possible emotion. When you see Noomi acting her, she is like: 'Fuck it all, I live my way and if you ever cheat on me or hurt me, I'll kill you!' you know something like that. But when I see Rooney acting her, she makes a look like: 'Please don't hurt me, I'm small and I don't know what to do..' It's not always about the look, it's also about the CHARACTER!
@tyzet4ever you got it! totally agree. Then Rooney´s Lisbeth doesn´t show any signs of being raped and mistreated by men since her 12, she looks just like a normal punk girl with piercings and... What makes Noomi´s Lisbeth such a perfect character is precisely this which Rooney´s Lisbeth lacks
Noomi Rapace is an excellent actress (no doubt about that) but as some of the people said here, if you read the books and compare Lisbeth's characteristics in the book with both Rooney and Noomi, you'll find that Rooney has more things in common. Rooney managed to look much younger than she is whilst Noomi seemed pretty much older. Rooney has a boyish type of body and is so small... Noomi has a body, and I can see she's taller than Lisbeth should be. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@mariamtope these differences really don´t matter, you totally miss what it´s all about. Who cares if Noomi is taller and looks older, the important is the character! Fincher´s / Rooney´s Lisbeth might more similar fysically, but psychically is so far from what she should be. Noomi is genial

I love "foreign" flicks... even if I have to read. :-P And I'm always seeki
Gosh, I am one of those lowly Americans you disparage - I saw both versions of Dragon tattoo and all three of the Swedish versions - ALL of which I thoroughly enjoyed - great movies!! When you get a great series of books to make movies from, THE MORE VERSIONS the BETTER in my opinion.... great movies from Stieg Larsson's fantastic books ... Noomi and Rooney both did a great job on these roles!!
I think all you haters are little hipsters who just like Noomi more because she was the first who played Lisbeth and not because she has so much more talent than Mara.
@LIBERTYdiner I agree with the hipster thing..but dude...mara killed it...seriously she was genius...not that Naomi was bad and I do prefer the originals but mara was just brilliant..
I think everyone is misidentifying the Fincher version. It isn't just the American version, but the English language version. English is spoken natively by nearly half a billion people. Not to mention, that only Mara and Robin Wright were the American cast members. Sure it was made with American money, but not solely for an American audience. The entire Anglophone was exposed to the English language Fincher version.
The people who own Hollywood and the media portrays the world with America at the center and God-like. Since Hollywood started, Americans have been conditioned to not watch foreign films. There is also a tremendous anti-immigrant sentiment here as well even though this was the go-to country for immigrants. There will always be American remakes in English because that is what they have grown to only accept. Americans dont read at the cinemas & refuse to learn languages.
I think it's inevitable that people are going to compare rooney mara and noomi rapace. Personally, i think both did exceptionally well, as lisbeth is one of the most complex characters to interpret on screen. Also, Rooney mara did a damn good job and had more pressure on her to deliver something different from noomi's portrayal. each actress brought their own idea of the character to life. And the US version is not a 'copy' of the 1st film, it has been remade strictly following the BOOK.
@Kasen717 you're absolutely right! this is a swedish story w swedish actors in swedish. the swedish movies were perfect. the fincher one didnt feel authentic. the swedish ones took you there in visual and sound. just without the meatballs.
@selty: Why do you Americans think that things would be good enough only if YOU make them? Who do you think you are? 've seen the three original movies starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist and they are excellent, absolutely. This girl Mara has nothing to do with this Swedish actress and so happens with Craig. We do not need Craig and Co. Sweddish were excellent. Americans should be less self-confident and arrogant and start watching around. There are plenty of good fish in the sea.
@TheDarkNazgul he never said he thought things were better when americans made them, he simply said that most people in the states are lazy and don't want to read the subtitles, which is sad but true. Anyways I'm glad Fincher made this remake I've seen the original movies too, and I have to say that while most originals are better then their remade version... this remake really is as good as the original if not better, a true contemporary masterpiece and it certainly does the book justice.
@TheDarkNazgul we don't think things would be good enough only if it's a usa movie, we have no problem with movies from the UK. the issue is (at least for me) the sweedish version had subtitles and you miss a lot because i don't know how to speak sweedish and had to read. I love Pan's Labrynth (also a foreign film) and I miss alot visually with the film because your focusing on reading the translation. I can't speak for other americans but that is how i feel
@heartstoe1 That's a question of practice. Of course it's easy for a Swede to say, as most of us understand enough English to watch a movie. But we are also used to reading subtitles in any language. I also think that the language barrier is only one part of the need for remakes. There are also cultural differences that can make a foreign movie difficult to understand. And that's why you lose a lot by not watching the originals. You lose the opportunity to broaden your view.
@TheDarkNazgul also as a side if we didn't remake everthing then hollywood would have to come up with their own ideas again... everything is based off a book, tv show, play or another movie these days
@TheDarkNazgul definitely. The Swedish 3 originals are perfect and so is Noomi. Rooney is far behind her in the portrayal of Lisbeth - for me she is NO Lisbeth at all. I feel quite sorry for the Swedish filmakers as the films are really masterpieces, but Fincher´s version had several Oscar nominations amd there´s been created quite a buzz around it, but the film is really not much good.
I agree completely. Noomi was fantastic in all three movies, I was really impressed by her. I am looking forward to seeing her in more movies now that she has gotten such critical acclaim for her role.
I think that is isn't so much that Americans honestly believe we can do it better, it is just that we know that Americans will only give a film the attention it deserves and pay to see it in English. Our track record with remakes is quite horrible but someone still makes money.
I think Rooney is awesome! Loved her acting and the whole piercings, mohawk bold look! She fukkin kicks ass! Never seen the Swedish version, but I gotta say this movie was really good for me and I hope to see more of bold Rooney :)
@FanYankees25 Who nominated Rooney for an American Prize? American themselves. That does not mean she's good at all. It's bussiness. American are lazy, self-confident and arrogant at the moment of considering other cultures, They only consider their own culture as good and worth enough. That´s a fault against any other culture and society. But American don't care, they think they're the focus of the Universe. This only make American people less rich in terms of education, culture and knowledge.
I saw both, I don't know, I think I like the first one, but it doesn't mean it's better, it's maybe a spychological trick, always prefering what you saw first.
The second one is good though, and I would have like it if I hadn't seen the first one.
Regarding Lisbeth character, I prefer Noomi.
Is it because I am a girl, I don't know.
I think Noomi and the first movie are more traight to the fact, more crude.
I simply think Rooney is much more attractive (woman-crush) and I prefer her personality since it's more humane compared to the Swedish original. BUT, my personal opinion aside I think Noomi did a better Lisbeth character according to the actual books. IRL I would prefer Rooney but as this character Noomi OWNS the part.
saw the remake of GWTDT 2 weeks ago and it sucks. im sorry as a fincher fan its one of his worst he's done so far. i was looking forward to watching that movie b.c of fincher but it didn't deliver. i found his version to be boring and the acting wasn't that great either. i think remaking it was a bad call but b.c its fincher people like it automatically for some reason. i will say the opening for the film credits was pretty cool but other than that not great.
Noomi is the one and only Lisbeth other than Steig Larsson's. With Ms. Mara, I wanted to go and rip all the piercings from her tell her to wash her face and hair and go back to high school. Noomi understands Lisbeth because she is Swedish. Lisbeth is Swedish. The Fincher film should never have been made. Hey Hollywood, novel idea here, stop with remakitis and come up with something new and leave other countries to interpret their own as they see fit. Noomi and Micheal are Lisbeth and MIchael.
I like how seriuosly Noomi took her character, how she analysed it the scientific way. For an actor or actress to think what you act is a very important thing, it's a craftsmanship and talent to act depending on strong inner visual imagination and knowledge. This is a big point against young and unexperienced Rooney who in most cases looks like 'automaton', too soft, too babyface, naive and even stupid face sometimes... well, any actress would look good in Lisbeth's role because of the script.
My comments were about how remake didn't bring anything new from the book to the screen,to warrant it being made in first place!I watched both versions and made clear reasons why original is better that the US copy.Serbia isn't full of western lifestyle but it's pushed onto society by those in power that have hold over media also. And if I dislike US in some way(your words) I got very good reason-my nation was attacked by them, yours wasn't so you can't understand!
Saw them both, Fincher's is definitely the superior version. He doesn't spend 5 min. on information that only need 5 seconds. The film is faster and although not much happens i never lost interest, can't say the same about the swedish version. Nearly lost interest in the film half way through.
Noomi was a bad Lisbeth. Her performance was VERY limited. She walked through the film mostly with only one facial expression. The styling is also better. Noomi looked like a drag queen.
@YoungZer0 I totally agree with mostly everything you said, but why did you say "although not much happens…."? An ass load of stuff happens in the movie!
@lstogner I meant action. Many directors don't manage to make their thrillers engaging without action. The fact that Fincher does is just another proof of why he's such a fantastic director.
Another example is Michael Mann's "Insider". Gripping till the end. Not a single shot fired, no explosion.
@YoungZer0 lol you appear to have not read the book, it's a slow thriller, very descriptive, which the swedish version stayed true to btw. And if you read the book you'd know that lisbeth has always "one facial expression" on her face, she never smiles, she never "looks" surprised even if she is. She doesn't wanna look like a victim, that's why she never reports the rape and takes revenge, her experiences have toughened her. Rooney played it way too fragile, she killed lisbeth
@MetallicSisters Lisbeth does smile in the books, as she's often described as having a 'crooked smile'. I think comparisons are inevitable, and people are always going to have a personal favourite. one thing i found was that the american version actually stuck more to the original storyline of the book than the swedish film did. this isn't a criticism on the swedish films, however, as i found them to be extremely well made. overall i think both films were great and both performances stunning.
Well the are both great films, and both woman did fantastic job..all though Marra dit a slightly more dificould part, trying to do something difrent from Noomi and doing also the swidish accent..so over all i find the American version(is not a remake) a little bit of a better movie Cinematography if u like for the cinema with great cast and director......i will remember in any way Noomi Rapace since i thing is the next big thing for Sweden..and same goes for Marra for the US..so GREAT STUFF
@nikolaosxiros ..well Mara get an OSCAR nomination..great i hope she ll get it this time compared to the golden globes....oh and OSCAR nomination for Cinematography too.. being such a cinephile pays finaly off:)..looking forward for the next two books to a movie from same production with Daniel Craig... of course!! GREAT STUFF INDEED!!
You know, I used to think that hollywood remakes were pointless. UNTIL I learned that most Americans will not watch foreign films. Yes, I am not kidding. In Australia, foreign films do fine! America, nothing but American films will grace the screens with packed audiences. No, I am not kidding. There is a reason Fincher did his own version. He wanted to show American audiences how awesome the books are. I think he did well.
@selty I agree with you buddy. There is very little exposure of foreign films in conventional cinemas. One has to look long and hard, usually at smaller theaters or at art schools, in order to find interesting films from abroad. I saw both versions: the Swedish and Fincher's version and they both are very powerful.
Everybody needs to shut up. I saw the original Swedish movies and fell in love, then I just saw the American adaptation and I was actually surprised by how good it was. The story is somewhat changed in areas but generally follows the same way as the original. That's just a fact. But stop being judgemental about it. Both versions are incredible and I really can't choose between them anymore.
@Fullmetal1890P THANK YOU. I am usually against hollywood remakes (because they suck ass usually) but this treated the books with a lot of respect, and I loved both leads as much as the originals and thought their takes on the characters were great.
Anyone who thinks that the swedish movie is better is wrong BECAUSE -
The Swedish films were in fact a TV series (which are brilliant) that were cut by 30 mins per title, to make them film length. Don't buy the theatrical version - get the "Extended version" of the 2009 film.
As for finchers adaptation (not re-make) = its a different film altogether but in my opinion it is a better FILM - people forget that films are a different medium to books.
@fuckem187 the swedish version being a TV series is not quite an argument on the quality of the adaptation. the duration of every part is more than 2 hours, so an extra of 30 minutes i believe, wouldn't change my opinion and that is that the swedish version is far better. plus, your only other reason is that film is a different medium.. would you mind giving a real argument, please? sth about the screenplay, production, photography, costume, soundtrack, directing.. you know, a real argument?
In terms of Directing, Cinematography, Costume and soundtrack, the 2011 version is vastly better, anyone who says differently really should go back and watch. But that doesnt mean its a closer or better interpretation of the book, that comes down to personal opinion. Although if you want the book.....why not read the book.
The full swedish TV series is much better in my opinion because the movie feels like a TV series that has been forced into a film.
@alehandralehandra Everyone (All the Critics + my friends who still prefer the swedish version - for the reasons below) agree that the Cinematography, Directing, Score and Costume is far better in the 2011 version, please explain otherwise...
What people do disagree on is the screenplays (script), actors and the atmosphere - these relate to your own interpretation of the book.
Get someone who doesnt know about this story and make them watch both films.. then ask which is a better made.
@fuckem187 lol ive got the Special edition and just watched the US Copy and i say copy because i didnt see any special only better thing maybe was Craig most of time it was just copying and cuting other szenes in it. Nearly the same. the swedish version is still better and i prefer the books whom are better than any film... Ah right Rapace was better in any case. Films are different medium right and the most problem with the us copy was cut hectic and the cast for lisbeth
stfu noomi is the only lisbeth. americans always turn good movies into mainstream shit. hollywood re-production always ruin the small budget movies, where the actors and the directos put much love in it. thumbs up for the truth.
I thought the David Fincher movie was better. It was more loyal to the book. And Lisbeth looked more vulnerable in the American movie, like she does in the book. And I`m not saying this because I`m American, cause I`m Belgian, but really, the Swedish movie was not nearly as good as the David Fincher movie.
As a viewer of both, I personally preferred the remake. I thought Lisbeth's role was conveyed better. The scenes were slightly shifted, but over all I just thought it was a better movie. Definitely matched my expectation, as a reader of the books.
Noomi is amazing. So is the Swedish film. But I'm tired off people dogging the remake when they probably haven't even seen it, or went in with prejudgments.
@Jvideos550 Im waiting for it to come out on blue ray ;) I cant pay expensive prices to see it in theaters. Besides I can wait. I have the Swedish films to keep me company.
In what way was remake better? Not even one single thing was better, not even close!Acting wasn't,atmosphere created wasn't,dialogue wasn't,investigation wasn't.Conclusion to the investigation was rushed, plenty senseless motorbike scenes, smoking and coffee drinking in almost every scene.Power winch needed to lift Blomkvists body by the torturer/suspect killer,lol.3-4 sex scenes(can't have US made film without them).Dumbed down yawning version remake is,zzz...zzz...zzz...
I've only seen the swedish version and I loved the whole thing, I'm afraid the american version is going to be all ass-kicking and no emotion. I'm very reluctant to watch it
@TheSarahGarza Do you not know who David Fincher is? I mean, it's David Fincher, not Michael Bay. And then American version is concentrated on the book. It's NOT a remake.
Noomi Rapace was the first to play a role of Lisbeth Salander and therefore none of the following embodiments of Lisbeth Salander can ever be as great as hers. Simply because she's left a strong impression on people and anyone who comes after her can not repeat the same - regarding people who saw the Swedish version. Out of my respect to the ones who did it first, and especially out of my respect to her (Noomi's) acting talent I won't even try to see the american version.
I saw EXCELLENT acting in BOTH versions of the movie. Both actresses playing Lisbeth conveyed the deep hurt, anger and sensitivity of the character. However, Noomi's Lisbeth was far more "hard" than Mara's interpretation. Still, I'm finding it hard to say one actress was better, they were both wonderful!
@deaduponbirth1 I think you're getting confused between Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara. Noomi Rapace is Swedish and lived in Iceland while Rooney Mara was born and raised in New York.
@carley5k Just watched the movie and thought the same, but as she said in the interview, she was acting be more way like a guy, and those do have armpit hair. If you check the sex-scenes in the movie, Men that hates womens ( Män som hatar kvinnor) You can see that she got loads of armpit hair.
Rooney plays the part as if she is hiding from the camera. She gives nothing away. When she gets in bed with Craig you wonder why? Noomie Rapace, on the other hand, lets us into the character; she shares Lisbeth's thoughts. We see in her performance the character's desire to connect, which gives those moments of shut-down a poignant inner conflict. Rapace's Lisbeth wants to trust but must not allow herself that option. She is that brilliant girl who understands all the paradoxes in her life.
I saw the american version yesterday, "the girl with the dragon tattoo" and i honestly just have one thing to say... the swedish version is so much better. I'm from Norway by the way. I mean, it was a great movie! But the original is better, and the swedish "Lisbeth Salander" can't be replaced.
Hello, my name is John Lindquist, I did the behind the scenes stuff on the dvd including this interview, you dont't have to since I sold the rights to Nordisk Film AB, but it would be nice if you metioned my name in the description under the clip, videoezy.
Fincher DID NOT ask Noomi to play the part in the American version. He wanted to make a completely different film. Thats what I was told by friends who worked on the film. They are two very different films tackling the same book material. Both are good for different approaches/visuals/actors and I am saying this because I have seen the new film.
What are you talking about? How are the films different, please tell me?I haven't seen any difference only that remake tried to shift few scenes(order of them)and change few scenes or rather(exaggerate them).Remake brings nothing new in point of different take/view on the book. What to say about how the plot was developed-clues just being found or popping out all over the place,no real feel to investigation at all.Why was remake/dumb,blunt copy of original made at all?
@BoxyTheSpaceDog When Lis' guardian has a stroke in the US version, she's right there. In the Swedish, she does not reach out for a reason expressed later. Her father was abusive, and she is afraid to attach with people.
Additionally, in the Swedish, Lis has every opportunity to save the killer and chooses not to. In the American, there is no chance.
Note her relationship with the reporter, too. She is the victim in the American version.
I saw that and instead of her caring for her mother in mental institution/nursing home from original, they exchanged that with her care for the guardian(big deal, lol).Yeah, when car explodes in original she's watching him(killer) die(faith those like him deserve). In original she's someone reporter is scared of(above him in strength of personality, mature far beyond her age, smart).Blomkvist finds her different, interesting.Too little changes to warrant remake.
I meand "big deal" in the weight of a change from original to remake. Not much change if any. That's what I meant,no space to explain in whole comment but I do agree.Too many changes but still film looks to weak to be warrant the need for it to be made.
Well we didn't come with bombs to your capital, did we???"My hate"(your words and findings) is very little that you really as nation deserve,or maybe you expected us (Serbs) to lick USofA's ass till' the end of time???Where did you see hate in my comment???Or on my page???Yeah,if I love my country I am not patriot but nationalist,hm???If I dislike a movie remake(based upon stolen foreign idea)I must be shoulder to shoulder with Adolf Hitler,hm???GO F_ _ _ YOURSELF!
@BoxyTheSpaceDog Your comment doesn't even make sense. You "dislike" a movie that according to you isn't any different than the original.
Your only contempt comes from the fact that the movie was made in "Hollow Wood" I am from Panama and couldn't care less about your other Nationalistic nonsense.
Also while we are at it and you decided to replay with such a gem of knowledge you posses as well as respect and manners towards other users-I think your comment addressed to me should in fact be addressed to this user"SculptedThoughts" that's from your country(home of the sheep and slave)who surprisingly dislikes US version even more than I do(comment pages 2&3).Stick her comments up your "patriotic"ass for all I care, inbreed.
Rooney Mara is not believable in this role, she looks like a runway supermodel with spiked hair and pierced nose, who couldn't kill a cockroach!! They even tried to give her a ghostly appearance with glowing eyes in the dark in one scene, but everytime the lights come on she still looks too refine and too skinny to play this part, rather than a killer she looks sick. Noomi Rapace looks more believable in every way, like she can kill someone and go on her way like nothing happened!
@franklinnj1 you´re comment is very funny, because Lisbeth is actually discribed as an anorexic girl, who looks much younger than she is and I think Noomi looks even older than she is. If you really read the books you would know that this is the weird thing about Lisbeth. Nobody would ever think that she can shoot somebody, because she´s so small and skinny.
Saw the remake - Rapace's Lisbeth would eat Mara's Lisbeth as an hors d'oeuvre. No competition. 2011 Lisbeth was a whiny, petulant brat. Swedish movie is a million times better, hands down.
@Jewelita13 You should watch it again, and this time leave your biases at the door. Glad Rooney Mara got a Golden Globe nomination for it; she gave the better performance.
Im tired of this debate on whos hotter. It is a matter of talent and who played the character better. Noomi, by far, played the character, Lisbeth Salander, with the best of her ability and did an excellent job in the original film. Mara has shown dedication as well with her dialect training and going to Stolkhom...they both deserve their props for their talent to play such a physically and emotionally demanding role.
Rooney Mara ain't got shit on Noomi....fuck all you ignorant haters...you obviously don't recognize talent or beauty...besides she sounds so hot when she speaks Swedish...so fuck off
Noomi es la mejor i like Noomi´s Lisbeth she´s the one & only

@selty: Why do you Americans think that things would be good enough only if YOU make them? Who do you think you are? 've seen the three original movies starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist and they are excellent, absolutely. This girl Mara has nothing to do with this Swedish actress and so happens with Craig. We do not need Craig and Co. Sweddish were excellent. Americans should be less self-confident and arrogant and start watching around. There are plenty of good fish in the sea.
TheDarkNazgul 3 weeks ago 46
@TheDarkNazgul he never said he thought things were better when americans made them, he simply said that most people in the states are lazy and don't want to read the subtitles, which is sad but true. Anyways I'm glad Fincher made this remake I've seen the original movies too, and I have to say that while most originals are better then their remade version... this remake really is as good as the original if not better, a true contemporary masterpiece and it certainly does the book justice.

@TheDarkNazgul i live in america and i feel like i wanna watch the swedish version if i can get it shes a good actor from the clips
SkyelarPuberty 1 week ago
@TheDarkNazgul we don't think things would be good enough only if it's a usa movie, we have no problem with movies from the UK. the issue is (at least for me) the sweedish version had subtitles and you miss a lot because i don't know how to speak sweedish and had to read. I love Pan's Labrynth (also a foreign film) and I miss alot visually with the film because your focusing on reading the translation. I can't speak for other americans but that is how i feel
heartstoe1 1 week ago
@heartstoe1 That's a question of practice. Of course it's easy for a Swede to say, as most of us understand enough English to watch a movie. But we are also used to reading subtitles in any language. I also think that the language barrier is only one part of the need for remakes. There are also cultural differences that can make a foreign movie difficult to understand. And that's why you lose a lot by not watching the originals. You lose the opportunity to broaden your view.
eliek485 5 days ago
@TheDarkNazgul also as a side if we didn't remake everthing then hollywood would have to come up with their own ideas again... everything is based off a book, tv show, play or another movie these days
heartstoe1 1 week ago
@TheDarkNazgul definitely. The Swedish 3 originals are perfect and so is Noomi. Rooney is far behind her in the portrayal of Lisbeth - for me she is NO Lisbeth at all. I feel quite sorry for the Swedish filmakers as the films are really masterpieces, but Fincher´s version had several Oscar nominations amd there´s been created quite a buzz around it, but the film is really not much good.
Gollummmmmmmm 3 days ago
@TheDarkNazgul

Sorry english is not my native language.
meelusine 1 month ago 5
I simply think Rooney is much more attractive (woman-crush) and I prefer her personality since it's more humane compared to the Swedish original. BUT, my personal opinion aside I think Noomi did a better Lisbeth character according to the actual books. IRL I would prefer Rooney but as this character Noomi OWNS the part.

Rooney's acting was better, simply because she never appeared to be arrogant towards people, but mostly socially awkward. She'd avoid eye contact.
And she also looks like a 23 year old, unlike Noomi.
YoungZer0 1 month ago
Saw them both, Fincher's is definitely the superior version. He doesn't spend 5 min. on information that only need 5 seconds. The film is faster and although not much happens i never lost interest, can't say the same about the swedish version. Nearly lost interest in the film half way through.
Noomi was a bad Lisbeth. Her performance was VERY limited. She walked through the film mostly with only one facial expression. The styling is also better. Noomi looked like a drag queen.
YoungZer0 1 month ago
@YoungZer0 I totally agree with mostly everything you said, but why did you say "although not much happens…."? An ass load of stuff happens in the movie!
lstogner 1 month ago
@lstogner I meant action. Many directors don't manage to make their thrillers engaging without action. The fact that Fincher does is just another proof of why he's such a fantastic director.
Another example is Michael Mann's "Insider". Gripping till the end. Not a single shot fired, no explosion.
The swedish version didn't manage that.
YoungZer0 1 month ago
@YoungZer0 who gives a shit for action. it makes the movie more unrealistic
MetallicSisters 1 month ago
@YoungZer0 Gotcha…. and I agree
lstogner 4 weeks ago
@YoungZer0 lol you appear to have not read the book, it's a slow thriller, very descriptive, which the swedish version stayed true to btw. And if you read the book you'd know that lisbeth has always "one facial expression" on her face, she never smiles, she never "looks" surprised even if she is. She doesn't wanna look like a victim, that's why she never reports the rape and takes revenge, her experiences have toughened her. Rooney played it way too fragile, she killed lisbeth
MetallicSisters 1 month ago 4
@MetallicSisters Lisbeth does smile in the books, as she's often described as having a 'crooked smile'. I think comparisons are inevitable, and people are always going to have a personal favourite. one thing i found was that the american version actually stuck more to the original storyline of the book than the swedish film did. this isn't a criticism on the swedish films, however, as i found them to be extremely well made. overall i think both films were great and both performances stunning.

I think he did well.
selty 1 month ago 50
@selty I agree with you buddy. There is very little exposure of foreign films in conventional cinemas. One has to look long and hard, usually at smaller theaters or at art schools, in order to find interesting films from abroad. I saw both versions: the Swedish and Fincher's version and they both are very powerful.
CaptainSpork7 2 weeks ago
Everybody needs to shut up. I saw the original Swedish movies and fell in love, then I just saw the American adaptation and I was actually surprised by how good it was. The story is somewhat changed in areas but generally follows the same way as the original. That's just a fact. But stop being judgemental about it. Both versions are incredible and I really can't choose between them anymore.
Fullmetal1890P 1 month ago 2
@Fullmetal1890P THANK YOU. I am usually against hollywood remakes (because they suck ass usually) but this treated the books with a lot of respect, and I loved both leads as much as the originals and thought their takes on the characters were great.
selty 1 month ago 2
Anyone who thinks that the swedish movie is better is wrong BECAUSE -
The Swedish films were in fact a TV series (which are brilliant) that were cut by 30 mins per title, to make them film length. Don't buy the theatrical version - get the "Extended version" of the 2009 film.
As for finchers adaptation (not re-make) = its a different film altogether but in my opinion it is a better FILM - people forget that films are a different medium to books.
As for Lisbeth both actresses are brilliant.
fuckem187 1 month ago
@fuckem187 the swedish version being a TV series is not quite an argument on the quality of the adaptation. the duration of every part is more than 2 hours, so an extra of 30 minutes i believe, wouldn't change my opinion and that is that the swedish version is far better. plus, your only other reason is that film is a different medium.. would you mind giving a real argument, please? sth about the screenplay, production, photography, costume, soundtrack, directing.. you know, a real argument?
alehandralehandra 1 month ago
@alehandralehandra
In terms of Directing, Cinematography, Costume and soundtrack, the 2011 version is vastly better, anyone who says differently really should go back and watch. But that doesnt mean its a closer or better interpretation of the book, that comes down to personal opinion. Although if you want the book.....why not read the book.
The full swedish TV series is much better in my opinion because the movie feels like a TV series that has been forced into a film.
fuckem187 1 month ago
@fuckem187 and yet again, your argument is simply that it's better. i guess we shouldn't try to discuss this anymore. sorry.
alehandralehandra 1 month ago
@alehandralehandra Everyone (All the Critics + my friends who still prefer the swedish version - for the reasons below) agree that the Cinematography, Directing, Score and Costume is far better in the 2011 version, please explain otherwise...
What people do disagree on is the screenplays (script), actors and the atmosphere - these relate to your own interpretation of the book.
Get someone who doesnt know about this story and make them watch both films.. then ask which is a better made.

Hollywood just want it to put his famous movie star in it Daniel Craig to give him some audience visibility for his next James Bond film.

Fincher DID NOT ask Noomi to play the part in the American version. He wanted to make a completely different film. Thats what I was told by friends who worked on the film. BoxyTheSpaceDog 1 month ago 11
Swedish film > American film.
And I am an American.

She doesn't look ugly, but her body is....kinda manly. :|
Someone told me that's part of Lisbeth's character, though. Not sure how true that is. Never read the books.
