hahaha.. the video made me laugh... the conductor still needs an expert conductor to teach him how to do the beating well. then when we beat.... you should artistic movements because its so nice to see a condcutor conducting artistically on his hand to arms gestrues. how pity he is. he's not interested
@TheTIGER220 By going (Down, IN, up) you lose the ictus by having your hands too close together making it difficult to follow especially on a large football field. If you have a more in depth explanation of your pattern, then I would be all ears :) .
Thanks a lot! I'm trying out for DM next and all that is required for conducting is just basic knowledge. Our marching band has about 140 members and we dont need pinpoint accuracy with hands. Most of the judging comes from marching fundamentals, so it doesn't matter if my conducting will be a little off
This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for the time you took to make it! I'm a freshman clarinetist in Missouri and being head drum major (we have three--about 220 piece band) is my dream! I want to get a head start on learning how!
@chivagirl123 You might want to conduct in a 3/4 pattern (down, out, up) and pulse the ictus of the 3/4 pattern three times (down, down, down, out, out, out, in, in, in repeat). There might other patterns you could experiment with (like if you get into concert ensemble conducting) but if you are thinking about something for on the field then you might want to stick with what I just told you. Remember to ask your directors too! Don't ever be afraid to approach your director with questions!
Are you a drum major, because if you are your hands are not supposed to be like that your conducting style is different. What i mean by this is that is different than mine, also there is a better way to conducts 3/4 and there is a more clear way to conduct 2/4 down and out. I am going to put this out there that before someone thinks that i don't know what I am talking about every comp. I have went to I have one first place Drum Major.
Ah thanks, watching your way of conducting 4/4 really helped improve mine. it looks so much more cleaner and defined now. I'm trying out soon and want to do my utmost best.
@OliviaMarieABC Just look at my video on 5/4. I didn't specifically say anything about 7/4 but it would be the same concept, since it's a complex meter it will have to be conducted once in 4/4 and again in 3/4 (4+3 = 7 , for those math whizzes ) but that depends on the speed. Sometimes it's faster which in that case you might have to do a form of 6/8 and adjust it around. If you tell me the song, I can post a video. Thanks for watching! -Moonmatt2
This is possibly the greatest explanation on here. I love how you showed what direction your hands moved on each beat. I actually feel like I am learning the proper way to do this. Thank you very much.
I can say this video really helped me a lot. I'm going to be a drum major for the Williamsburg Marching Band as a freshman. I'm very nervous... But, thank you for this absolutely helpful video!
I noticed in your patterns you bring your hands in. Most of the time when a marching band drum major is conducting, they have bright uniforms and when you bring your hands in, they slightly disappear. So i would recommend like in 4/4 just going down twice instead of going down, in, out, up, go down, down, out, up

Would the 4/4 be the same conducting pattern even with a different beat? Same with 3/4 and 2/4?

most drum majors tap the ictus at the ends of their fingers not in the middle of their hands
