Excellent!! Shoot 300 rounds only hit the target 30 times @ 10 & 15 feet away embarrassed... After having watched this I shoot 100 rounds 80 hits and most in and on target same distance and shooting booth.
Great video; very educational, informative and enlightening. My grip was similar to this but just couldn't fins were to place my left (non dominant) thumb on my sub-compact. I would definitely adopt this pistol grip.
James I appreciate the proper pistol grip vid , I have a question though. Is it a bad idea in your oppinion to place the left index finger in the grip your using on the front of the trigger guard? Also what mistake am I making that causes me to shoot just a little left?
first i've been to the range with my g21,and i've been ALL OVER the target but not where i wanted, when i learned to hold the gun properly with the thumbs ligned up and squeezing the trigger slowly with the sight's staying aligned,i hit center,
I love your no nonsense appoach to things. I really hatewhen other youtube "experts" try to instruct via comments instead of action. keep up the good work!! hope to see you soon at a class!
2. I have tried this grip on my sig p226 for some time with varied success, but I bought a G17 last week and it seems to respond better to my hands with this grip. I only fed the Glock 200 rds, but I feel pretty good so far with it. Next session will be tomorrow, hopefully will go as well.
3. I saw in your other video that your primary carry handgun was a G19. Would you recommend this for any average sized man or does it greatly depend on the person?
Wow!! I think that you might go down as one of the only video's on pistol grips on youtube that is very accurate and informative. It really shows that you teach in the real world in your confidence and ability to explain things. Great work. Thanks for the post.
I've tried this grip on my P99 and I'm finding that it causes my thumb to sit right on top of the slide lock, and it's causing the slide lock to occasionally not catch the slide when the mag runs empty. It also happens for my brother and wife when using this grip on that model pistol. Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround?
If I "rest my left thumb on the takedown" of my Sig P226R, that puts my thumb nearly in contact with the slide. This doesn't seem safe, but placing my thumb below that takedown still feels secure. What do you recommend?
A friend of mine taught tactical pistol for 7 years and confirmed that what you teach is the correct grip, and said I won't even feel the slide moving. I'll be shooting the Sig for the first time tomorrow at the range, but have been practicing your grip method with snap caps this past week. Thanks for the video!
I went to the range for the first time today. I really got comfortable with this grip. If I paid attention and made sure my left hand (I'm right handed) was doing its job, it reduced my tendency to fire left of where I was aiming. I went back to my local gun shop and the resident pro target guy gripped my Sig exactly as you explain in this video, and he said my grip looked very good. I will be buying your videos, thanks James!
James , Do you lock your elbows , leave them slightly bent , or more bent? I've seen it all 3 ways done by people and want to know what you think. I value your knowledge on shooting technique.
After trying out the thumbs forward position during the last few range sessions, I'm hooked! It seems so much easier to get on target, and stay on target.
good video! perfect explaination- although my grip is slightly different. i normally have me left index finger on the front of the trigger guard. allows me to get a slightly higher grip on the gun, and just generally feels more comfortable, while still getting good results.
I think I stated that wrong. What I meant to ask was, when you're shooting strong hand only, is your thumb still forward? (as opposed to say, having it touch the tip of the middle finger, which is gripping the pistol)
Nice video, sir, and I thank you for sharing it. Interesting, however, is that although I was trained in this method, both times I've had to shoot defensively it was one-handed, as my weak hand was occupied. My point is that one-handed shooting should also be practiced. I liked your north-south-east-west analogy for gripping. Very nice job.
Good video, James. I've been teaching the same grip for some time as well. Another good point or index I use is that your support-hand thumb and your trigger finger should generally end up at about the same point on both sides of the pistol if you look down on it from the top (and IF you're not some kind of freak of nature) :-)
I was wondering if you could possibly speed up the delivery of the most important Fundamental checklist. I have no clue what you said from your lazerfast rote delivery of something that seemed like words. Anyhow..other than that, good vid..
As a student of James' Tactical Response, where I learned this grip, I do fully agree that it takes a little time to break yourself of the bad habits. However, I can personally attest to the improvement of my shooting because of it. If you can go from saying "I can hit the target with every shot from 3 yards" to saying "I can hit the 10 ring with every shot from 3 yards", I think it speaks volumes regarding the technique.
There is no gain in fundamentals because as I explained your grip has little to do with them. The gain is from being able to deliver the fundamentals faster i.e. controllability and repeatability.
Where can I get one of those blue guns to practice with.

Do you use the thumbs forward grip in both the iso and weaver stances ?

I don't use a "stance" so I wouldn't know.

Hmmm that actually unintentionally answered my question.

It isn't relavent. The quality of the rounds fired mean more than the reload. If you shoot well enough you don't need more bullets.

I recommend to do what I say in the video. I teach people every day with Sigs. This grip works.

James, when holding the pistol this way are you pushing and pulling between the strong and weak hand to create some tension?
AJourneyOfYourSoul 2 years ago
No, that is a "Weaver" type grip. We have found it has no place in fighting with a pistol.

We do not recomend this technique as many folks tend to pull the shots off because of that finger up front.

I'm slowly trying to switch to the thumbs forward technique from a 'left thumb on right thumb' technique, which feels more natural.
One question I have is, when you shoot with your dominant hand only, are you still keeping your right thumb forward, with no pressure on the pistol?
Great vid, BTW!
SputnikJunior 2 years ago
Where did you get the idea of "no pressure"?
JamesYeager 2 years ago
I think I stated that wrong. What I meant to ask was, when you're shooting strong hand only, is your thumb still forward? (as opposed to say, having it touch the tip of the middle finger, which is gripping the pistol)

this grip with a Beretta 92FS causes my thumb to hit the slide stop in recoil.
helps in controlling it during rapid fire, but can be a pain in the ass.
works awesome for 1911s.
cha0sXT 2 years ago
If your thumb is hitting the slide stop you are not doing the grip correctly. This grip will work with all modern semi-auto or full-auto pistols.

Is there a technical name for this form of grip?
A few weeks ago I tried to describe the same using only text. I dont know if the guy got the idea, I'll have to forward your video to him to be sure.
Hope to see you or one of your instructors in Maine this coming September, if not this year... next year for sure.
