I wouldn't say that they are as erotic as they are symbols of compassion. It was a sign of love. Early societies are known for their embracing of fertility. Being inside one of those temples represents a place of serenity and peace. The sculptures depicting the life of Indian society are meant to be a way of making it easier to make one calm down and reflect.

In Kashmir, King Kinnara demolished thousands of viharas and captured the Buddhist villages to please Brahmins. A large number of viharas were usurped by Brahmins and converted into Hindu temples.
