Good news to you my friend! I was checking my email and received a notification from Screen Archives. The complete soundtrack has just been released and the digital sound preserved! check it out at screen archives.com .
Listening to the theme tune for the movie at a cinema with the very first 16 bit digital sound system to be used, I was bowled over by the quality–if the entire audio track for the whole film: the scripts etc.. had been digitally recorded it would have been a knock out in 1979.
A nice Disney version of 2001 A Space Odyssey and William Gibson combined, enjoyed it since i was a kid and my big brother was 8 years old when he saw this movie in theaters.
John Barry was approached by George Lucas and Barry suggested an up an coming composer called erm.....John something. The rest of course is history..John Barry did not know whom Williams was
The score overall is nice, including this brief concession to the "heroes march" school of sci-fi film scores. It played in the auditorium before the movie at the now-defunct cinema where I saw it. So as with the soundtrack album, I heard this and then the opening credits.
The music when the two Maximillians merge just before the end is nicely otherworldly and kind of eerie too.
@crazybat07 Ordinarily I would agree with you, and yes some of the movie's charm are it's low tech effects. But I think it would look amazing if some of the cheesier stuff was dulled down and the effects beefed up. This movie was pretty "huge" and entertaining in the theatre.
again great film, made better by the soundtrack. This peice of music is hands down one of THE BEST movie themes(not counting star wars or 2001:a space odyssey)and is my second favorite movie theme(first goes to radiers of the lost ark).and if they are remaking this movie they had better leave two things alone:the speacil effects, and the music.if they remake it and make a whole new soundtrack, theyve killed the movie.
yeah this movie was caught between disney standard hell and trying to compeat with the success of Star Wars (which explained the "cute" robots except for Maxmillion who was pretty original and kick ass) if Black Hole had have produced by any other big studio other then Disney at the time it probably would be held in much higher reguard one can only wonder "what if" had Ridley Scott got his hands on this back in 79 or even Speilberg
Dude thank you so much for adding the score of my alltime favorite soundtrack of Disney's The Black Hole which will be release on Disney digital 3-d on august 25, 2010.
@number1spielbergfan Yep, They are bring back the original black hole in disney digital 3-d just like they did with toy story 1 and 2 for the release of toy story 3 in disney digital 3-d to which it with be release on dvd and blu-ray on november 2, 2010
@Madchris55 um.......As far as i know, its impossible to make a previous 2-D movie 3-D.(if it IS possible though, I would LOVE to see this movie in 3-D.Hope it wont be a ripoff like Jaws 3-D.
great movie. the black hole itself is pretty impressive for the 70's. i love this movie, the ONLY reason it failed was because whoever wuz in charge of filming the trailer decided to make it look like a mickey-mouse movie(that mistake iz also known as "mickey mouse crap")evan though "Avatar"wuz good, the effects still dont look quite as good as the ones in this movie.Best old-style SF effects ever.they should just rerelease this movie, with a better trailer.
I loved this movie and had the vinyl sondtrack (still do) and a whole bunch of action figures from it! (wish I still HAD them, might be worth something now haha). I agree with most people on here though....WTF was with the ''Hell'' ending?? Shoulda made a sequel!! Great movie, with great music by John Barry.
Ok, piusg, You made me have a Really good belly laugh with the smoking of the weed line. VERY FUNNY!! But I must say, you were one thousand percent right. They had to have run out of idea's for the end, and had to turn to the GUNDGA-MON thats for sure. But what the hell they're Disney.
The film is good even if the effects are a bit ropey by today's standards. And the ending is plain bonkers. But John Barry's soundtrack is superb, elevating the whole movie and this piece is the most memorable. Thank you so much for posting this.
The model of the Cygnus was one of the most beautiful and spectacular movie miniatures I've ever seen on film. Despite the shortcomings in the story and the sometimes corny dialogue, you can't deny that the folks at A.C.E.S. -really- knew their special-effects business.
As I get older and watch the film with new eyes, the visual effects in TBH just become more and more stunning. I'll echo the sentiment of some of the other commentators here: you -cannot- top the visual effects in THB with CGI.
I just watch TBH with my 13-year-old son last night, who had never seen it before. While he liked it, we both opined that the ending was just... out there. Weird.
It's as if the Disney scriptwriters got to the end of the film, ran out of ideas, and smoked a whole bunch of weed for inspiration.
"Oh--I know! *cough* *cough* Let's--Let's have Reinhart go to Hell, *cough* but he's--he's -inside- his evil robot! *cough* Yeah! That'll be great! *cough* Yeah, man--#@&*! Lucas! We're -Disney,- man!"
Only the later (but the movie, End of Evangelion, takes the bate) half of the series is "pretty weird". From episodes 1 to about 15 or 16, it's all good 'n dandy but then on it slowly starts to get "pretty weird".
Just for future reference but any religious symbolism...was just added there for shitz and giggles (as stated by one of the employees who worked on the show).
@piusg HAHAHA!!! I know! But, still, I kinda liked that ending (even if it did look like Reignhart and Maximilian were making out as they fused together)!
this was one of Disney's best movies hands down. I love the " old" special effects in it. That's when people really had to think how to make us believe it was real. Music was terrific. Along with John Williams " Star Wars" this movie theme is one of the best written for sci-fi.
Sort of Disney's answer to Star Wars and 2001 and Star Trek don't you think? it came out at the same time as ST The Motion Picture did in December. Did your big brother see this on the big screen?
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, this was basically Disney's answer to Star Wars. My brother did see it in theaters and i saw it on cable for the first time when i was 3.
Agreeee!!!!..I see this movie with my father (rip)...and i always love it...Like tron, krull, star trek II,condorman,dragonslayer...men!!! What a movies!!!
@romeonarcizo I grew up watching awesome movies like The Black Hole, Star Wars ep.4-6, Flash Gordon, Tron, The Dark Crystal, Krull, Star Trek 1-6, E.T., Dragonslayer, The Last Starfighter, Flight of the Navigator, Return to OZ, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Labyrinth, Willow, The Last Unicorn, The Secret of NIMH, Rock & Rule, Heavy Metal, Enemy Mine, Outland,Mad Max 1-3 and many many more and i can very safely say now that the 80's were truly the best time ever for the movies and being a kid.
cgi smee-gi special effects always look better with real world models you can see something that exists if done properly can not be beaten by cgi and probably never will
This movie is awsome! love it from when i was a kid! would be fantastic it they remade it, staying true to the original, and would HAVE to get Maximilian Schell back as Reinheart!!!! imagine what the hole itself would look like with cgi today! love it! a classic!
Great Song!!! IMO, this movie is very underrated, it really deserves MORE. Disney should go back & fix all the special effects, and also give us a special edition dvd/blu-ray with lots of extras.
That would be nice, considering that there are some deleted scenes, such as the sequence when the crew tries to go through the engine room and a bridge collapses with Captain Holland on it. You can see a cut on his face later in the film that I believe comes from this cut sequence. There are stills of it in the storybook and the whole thing is described in the novelization.
A blu ray release would be sweet, with commentary from the cast (surviving cast members that is).
@crazybat07 Sounds great. But I don't want "enhanced effects" (changing it to CGI. I like the effects. There beautiful and look so real (exc. for the wire or two on the robots). But I like the pre-computer generated stuff. I think CGI looks fake. But if u and others don't, it's fine w/ me.
@crazybat07 Do you hear and lyrics in this so called song? Its called film score in DOLBY STEREO which is better than dtsHDMA since DOLBY has been making films sound better for almost 40 years.
I remember that piece too. It had a pretty cool sound to it from what I recall. Unfortunately, I do not have that piece, as it was never released on the soundtrack. However, I have been toying with the idea of ripping the audio from the film itself and making my own complete soundtrack of the film and posting it in the future. Only problem is I'm lacking the skills and equipment to do this at this time.
@RustiSwordz Just to let you know, Disney gave Intrada Records the go ahead to release the complete score to The Black Hole. If you go on Intrada's website you can order it for $19.99. Just ordered my copy today and will be eventually posting the missing cues that many have requested finally for a complete score.
Keep posting my friend, good to keep the genuis that is John Barry alive with his past work. This track is as you say truimphant. Raucous & 'having it'!
This soundtrack made history...
It was the first ever digital recording (made in 1979).
