To make free energy possible you would have to patten it the pull a stunt like in The Saint, where the whole world saw Cold Fusion was real. Tesla was a great inventor, AC power, and was even later credited with inventing Radio. But he also had some bad ideas. Broadcast power was one of them. The reason Morgan pulled funding for it was because it did not work.

Even at real short distances the losses were just to great.
