As some people mentioned earlier (I'm sorry to bring this up, I just think it'd funny to say this), the video can't possibly have been sped up without some serious editing being put into it after recording, but that I doubt judging from the poor Windows Movie Maker intros. :F

Now, the reason is because of the cymbals. The cymbals of a drum set do follow the laws of gravity as well, and as you can see, they fall at a normal rate. Cymbals won't necessarily fall faster with a harder hit. :F

The gap between Portnoy and this guy is simply the sound.

Being as skilled as Portnoy is not being able to learn the songs he plays and hit the the good cymbal when MP does.

This cover is great but for ex., the chinese is badly used almost everytime and some patterns are replaced by not relevant ones...

I think MP is not the best and i do prefer Royster,Pridgen... But after thinking, MP keeps being great with the accuracy and global quality of his sound. And he's also clearly more skilled;-)

@Aroun88 portnoy is not all that great. not that i dont like how he gels with liquid tension exp, but he has a serious lack of dynamic range. not much gap between this and portnoy except the production. check out gavin harrison from porcupine tree, he blows portnoy out of the water.

Portnoy has passed his prime but he was an innovator. That's how its supposed to be. There's not a dream theatre song that I can't play, now. People like the guy in the video have learned Portnoy's skill and got it down now he's more skilled than Portnoy. That's not hard to realize. Its called Evolution. That's what makes Labron better than Jordan. Skill wise.

Very nice work! And as PragueMeddler said you are more playing TO the song rather that playing THE song. I see that as a plus since we all get to hear a little more of your own style, just playing a song like it is on the record tend to be quite boring, creativity is a drummers greatest tool.
