  • Xclnt, thanks man

  • A fine Teacher, you are, Thanks

  • you NEVER want to short out capacitor terminals...especially in one that size...

  • this was a great tutorial am an a/c tech my self in Trinidad and Tobago i look for different tutorials everyday on here thanks for the knowledge

  • So the capacitors I have checked recently all have a +/- % for the MFD that you can be over/under. usually +/- 6%. Some of them i have not seen this on new and used. Am i to assume that if they are over or under than they are no good? The reason i ask is because when i check the brand new ones for comparison they are right on the money usually by .01 so the reading i would get would look like 35.01 and a lot of the used ones as well with some used one reading between 33 and 35

  • @dendog21 Your are right. Most textbooks say 10% but the capacitors will say 5%. 10% would be thae max for me. Thanks for watching.

  • Great Job very informative and thanks

  • Explained well

  • Also I changed filter caps and changed all 6 valves + bias adjustment for the el34's in my video:

"Sound City L-B 50 Plus (1973 mod) - maintenance and repairs."

  • Great video!

Note: Electrolytic caps is a type that uses an electrolyte, an ionic conducting liquid, as one of its plates. This reqs that the applied volt must be polarized; (DC)They cannot be used with AC signals without a DC polarizing bias. The ionic conducting liquid has a expire date, even if never used!!! They can look ok when tested using a 'meter' as u do, but still be bad. They are to be changd befor they start to bubble! check video: "Tube Amps 101 repairs, maintenance and more"

  • @Rocknrollthor Wow!!! Very indepth. Great job

  • Excellent work!

  • nicely explained!!!!! thank u 21 foot xpress.

  • Now that was well explain, need more videos like this, keep up the good work.

  • Like

  • Dear 21 as u can see more than 200,000 people have watched this informative video,MORE POWER TO U and keep the good work and as to 10%!!!!!!

all perfect people bother some of us that are not so perfect.THANX AGAIN

  • @rnabati1 WOW!! I just noticed that this video had over 200k views. Thanks for the kind words.

  • great vid. very helpful with the large symbols on the yellow paper. thanks

  • Thanks for the useful lesson.

  • The micro farad setting on the meter is mfd or uf depending on the manufacturer, some meters won't measure micro farads though. The resistence is in ohms which looks like an upside down horse shoe. Good vid though, thanks,

  • love listening to southern accents talking electronics.

  • @2ndAsstJizzMopper Thanks, where are you from?

  • Take your meter, set it to the capacitor setting?? Ah, my meter doesn't have a capacitor setting. Great video, but my problem is understanding all the settings on the meter. This thing is a pain in the ass. I bought it for battery testing, which is easy. So what should I be testing for, resistance? This meter starts off with a line & a triangle in the middle of it., then goes to 200 - 2k - 20k - 200k & 2M... Checked my duel capacitor from the bottom up - nothing! Light Bulb gives a reading tho.

  • Man I appreciate the info. Who cares that your math was off. Anyone with a brain would know that you know what you are talking about. Thanks again.

  • Very helpful thanks!

  • Great vid quick question though...i have always discharged run caps with my screwdriver...tried doing the same on a dual and it blew the tip off...was i just unlucky or is this common with dual caps?

  • great vid bro, thanks , i have a start capaciter i need to check, i didntrealize it was so easy to chek them

  • need to review the math quote = 10% of 45 is NOT 0.45 it is 4.5. Big difference

  • @condor5635 Yeah I slipped up. Sorry. I have gotten ALOT of comments on that one. Just not worth redoing. Thanks.

  • Nice explanation, Eficient and effective

  • Thanks for the OUTSTANDING instructions... ur the best i have seen on vids...I am hoping u can ignore the none professinal idiots and continue with more info... my students love ur work and it reinforces what i teach to them...here is Thanks for what i have seen and Thanks in advance for ur future vids :) Ricco

  • @Rjkett Thanks for the kind words.

  • dont let bad comment stop u from making vids.

    u r best teacher

  • excellente, you are a great teacher, dont let stupid comments to stop you from posting more videos. congratulations.

  • Not sure what all the flaming is about.

From an old white guy from Alabama - THANKS!!

My house is intact from the tornadoes, but my a/c has been out.

And it's hard to get repairmen out - they are a little busy right now.

Anyway, you helped me diagnose my problem. Actually, enough to take the capacitor to the supply house ( they were about 2 blocks from being blown away.)

They tested it and for $40, my house is getting cool.

    Thanks!!

  • very good info, thanks

  • It never fails to see a bigot post just by the color of your hand. I'll be honest, as soon as I saw your hand I expected as much. What's sad is that I was right. Let's see if I can go 2 for 2. The next racist comment will be posted by a hill billy, ignorant, inbred, redneck American who still thinks the Confederate Flag isn't offensive.

  • ignore the idiots. good vid.

  • I particularly like the way you simple-mindedly teach this component. I see it repeatedly to make sure it sinks in my brain. I have researched this device extensively and it is described with complication however you teach it very simple aind I appreciate that. Thank you

  • I'm a electrical field engineer and would like to say you are a good teacher for a novice learner....all should be careful in testing high voltage caps...always remember current kills not voltage....just be careful and think before you do anything in electrical....current takes the least path of resistance to ground....don't be in the way to ground path...you'll get zapped or be killed....a few milliamps across heart will kill you!!!!! always respect electricity and be cautious with it...

  • Great video!!! Thanks!!

  • Sorry for my bad english, but - using a screwdriver to discharge a capacitor?!

You can DESTROY capacitor in that way sometimes, and even hurt yourself badly!

And where's safety instructions for people who want to measure it, but are unaware of potentional danger (for example how to deal with 440V in capacitor's terminals)?

Lot of people visit YouTube, even kids. You can't assume all of them knows a procedure.

Other than that, it's nice tutorial.

  • Great video

  • So how long would a capacitor last with regular use (3-5 months a year) ?

  • Well done thanks a lot

  • and its ultra farads

  • the best way to check a capacitor is to touch it with ur tongue

  • Pureass is what his name implies! This is a great tutorial, thanks for posting. I'm trying to fix my ac and this will help ... Ac man wants $137 to replace the capacitor. foo! What do you know about blower rollers? and cleaning them....

  • Great video buddy

  • you should probs return that equipment, someone might be looking for it.

  • Hey whats up brother !

You do some of the best video's on youtube !

Thank You for the educational videos !

    Very well done !

The people new to our trade will benefit greatly from them !

Man I am very sorry that pieces of crap with the I.Q of a common garden slug have found your channel !!! (that may be insulting the garden slug) LOL

I have been subscibed to you for some time now ,and come back often to review !

Keep up the great work my friend , anxiously awaiting your next videos !

  • @cumesoftware no, no, by keeping the comments reminds people that there are still retards that haven't been worked out of the genetic pull yet.

  • Good job man... you have a very good way of explaining the fundamentals of dealing with capacitors with beginners, take care...

  • Great Video, Question Is there anyway ,I can add heating strips on my 10,000 btu window unit's with just cold air only? You Know like modified it.

  • Thanks for your videos. You do a really good job. Clear information.

  • Very informative Thanks so much.......

  • Thanks!

  • @21footxpress,

Good job bro, you are better than all the instructors in my school including the God damn useless text books we use.

  • This is a REALLY well-done and helpful video. Thanks yo!

  • Thanks a bunch!

  • some idiot sold me a replacement fan for my dehumidifier and lied about which model it was, so I have to replace one that does not need a cap with one that does but he clipped it off and did not send it. Assuming he did not lie about it was pulled working, how do I figure what cap to actually use with it? thanks

  • yes always remember to discharge or BANG wtf was that lol good vid dude well done

  • Great Job Staright forward and got the info I needed.

    Thanks

  • great vid, thanks for the easy explanation!

  • very informative, thank you.

  • Thank you, you're good, and it helped me solve the problem.

  • and if you use this caps as stun gun after it's redcharge with 2000v ??

  • keep up good work

  • @Thetruthishere11 What??

  • @21footxpress

Good video. Don't pay attention to jackass by the name of "Thetruthishere11".

  • i have a feildpiece SC76 i think thats what he has?

about $135 bucks at a a/c supply warehouse , great for all a/c checks

  • @Q4JULY33063

    google lcr meter

amazon has them for 40-50 bucks.

  • THANKS !! YOU PUT ME ON THE RIGHT TRACK!!

  • I like the way u describe trouble shooting can u help me trouble shoot commercial ice machine videos my name is atif

  • This video was just what I was looking for, thanks for the information it was very helpful.

  • Thanks for the help. My Whirlpool window units fan quit (model-AC1854XTO). After I located the capacitor I was in the process of removing it and noticed one of the common wires had corroded and was not connected. After cleaning the terminal and testing per your instructions all it needed was a 50 cent female blade connector...Thanks for the help...Bravo..

  • i have a fluke meter but i dont have a capacitor tester on it..i have ohms on it can i test it some other way

  • Excellent tutorial. It works on all types of capacitors I've found. Thanks!

  • depending if the electrolytic cap is poled or not, your schematic can be either a common positive or common negative. depending whether it is poled or not though.

  • please mention the meter type you are using.. Do you recommend it?

  • Fieldpiece SC77. Does everything you will ever need

  • You answered it all. Thanks

  • Good tutorial. Thankyou

  • Good tutorial. Thankyou

  • Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge sir. I do believe my fan motor is bad. I replaced the capacitor for it was bad, however it didn't completely solve my problem. My AC freezes over during operation and I noticed the motor was turning very slow and would not pick up speed. I am wonder is the High side bad? Are these motors expensive to replace and what size should look for without taking out the motor. Thank you for your response. God Bless.

  • Thankyou for this video

  • Thanks for posting. Good information. What is the brand and model of your meter? I have not seen one like that before.

  • Very helpful -- thanks a lot.

  • Excellent

  • that was great. im a HVAC student and this helped alot.

  • thank you Sir! Your demonstration and drawings made perfect sense. thank you!

  • Informative video..

    thanks & love,

    kris.

  • Nice job, easy to follow, thanks so much!

  • thanks your d sh*t

  • well done... "KISS" keep it simple... very informative and abridged enough not to bore one to death lol. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • Ten percent of 45 is 4.5, not .45.

  • Thanks. I was rushing making this video.

  • @Agellius Like you've never made a mistake before?

  • @baileynsa Yes, I have. And I have also accepted correction when my mistakes were pointed out to me. As the video author did with good grace.

  • @Agellius Whatever! It was a simple mistake and you're right he was very gracious. You, on the other hand were not...

  • thanx for the video...l found it very simple to understand ...make more videos, please

  • I found your demonstration very well thought out & informative, so thanks for sharing sir. :)

  • Thanks for the kind words.

  • nice video thanks!!

  • Is that the best that you can come up with?

  • I would like to say I find your videos informative and well worth watching.

  • all the racists should go back to doing your moms and sisters. by the way your drooling on the keyboard.

  • keep your head up. you will make way more money in your life than those idiots could even dream of

  • keep your head up. you will make way more money in your life than those idiots could even dream of

  • Thanks

  • How do you discharge a dual capacitor? Is there any difference between discharging a regular capacitor and a dual capacitor?

  • Discharge from common to hermetic then common to fan

  • Thank you

  • Great video! Thank You.

  • Great video, and very well demonstrated (hands on) and explained. thanks for posting! :)

  • why is shorting out with a screw-driver discouraged? A: cuz it may result in excessive current flow internally .. damaging the leads leading to the terminals. Better to slow drain with a suitably sized 20K resistor as you intimated. This applies to CRT tubes as well. Interestingly; the Q is not stored inside the picture tube as such. There is the gray conductive coating on the outside of the pictube and on the inside .. the glass itself is the dielectric! Nothing to do with the vacuum.

  • This is fine, for capacity test, but a bad capacitor can still hold and WILL measure fine capacity. You need to check for leakage too at breakdown voltage.

    Happy learning.

  • yes very good video..i'm in tech school atm and this is the next phase i'm going into..i'm totaly into the hvac

  • Good luck in the future. Where do you to school?

  • you are a good technician.

  • You're a smart mother fucker. I hope you make a good living in electrical work!

  • THANKS you just saved me a service call !

I just checked the capacitor and its bad thats why the fan would only buzz and when I assisted it it would start ,but the air was not cold......Thanks again you saved me some bucks!

  • Good!! Glad to help.

  • Great video, very informative. Please post more when you have time.

  • Good video but it's dangerous to discharge a capacitor by shorting the leads, it could blow up.

  • I stand corrected. You are right. It should be noted that the corrected way to discharge them is by using a 20k ohm ristor.Thanks.

  • nice multimeter

  • Yes

  • Capacitors can hold an electrical charge. The resistor bleeds the charge off so it does not hold a charge when the unit is off.

  • this man is brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

  • Di I detect Military Training...I find he's very good, men that know their stuff tends to give very ubderstandable explanations. Nothing slick just facts.. Excellent Job!

  • No military training here. I love what I do and want to be good at it. Thanks. I will do my best to post more videos.

  • mu F (mew) F = micro Farads (looks like u with a long side) Greek letter mu. And I thank you.

  • nicely done

  • Good explaination. I agre with others, would have been a good teacher at my trade school.

  • I went to 5 years of union apprenticeship training.

This guy teaches better than ANY of the teachers I had. He makes it easy. Wish I had him as a teacher.

  • awesome I went to 4 years of trade school got my mechanics card and you have given the best demo good work

  • nice video this is what the internet world should be like and not all that other junk.
