I think squall's death is a legit argument. He got impale by Edna and everything afterwards was a fantasy. A "final fantasy". He changed so much from that point forward and became Siefer and took the same Kightdom to Rinoa that Siefer took to Edna

Also Square don't leave people guessing with stuff this important, they would have made it blatantly obvious and said "Squall is dead".
