Your one legged drill suggest that for greater efficiency weight distribution should be more like 90% to 95% on the lead leg and 5% to 10% on the back leg rather than 50% 50% as promoted by so many golf instructures. What say you? When a golfer is at address is the weight mostly on the lead leg or is the weight distributed more evenly on both legs?
@Siceone Check the date! This came out before I ever knew about S&T and it really is not the same thing at all; this is the real definition of what stacked is; not about fictitious centres but stacking the centre of gravity of your body properly and keeping a solid platform under the swing of the arm club unit. Shawn
@riverace7 No Mate; that is a post for the carts not to go in the wet area there; I am well back of it just like I say in the video; I am very careful of not over exaggerating distances as I want to be taken seriously; all you need to do is ask any of the guys in my forum who have taken lessons and seen me hit shots in person; Shawn
Shawn - I just broke the light fixture in this room b/c of this video. I'll be sending you the bill : o ) ...... j/k about the bill, but seriously - there's glass all over the floor.
keep up the great instruction. I just started playing last year and I broke 90 last week, much because of your tips.
oh man yesterday I did the first one legged drill I'd done in months...5-iron I'm used to it going maybe 185 on a good strike, 175-180 average. After about 4 good shots with the one leg, the next one just felt like it exploded off the face and easily carried 195 yards! I couldn't replicate that shot again by the time I had run out of balls, but the one legged drill DOES work and it IS EFFICIENT.
Yes but you dont hit golf ball off one leg so why are you showing this. Didnt look like 195 to me! Its like you are showing a whole swing but you are confusing starting golfers! You are just showing a good follow through.
@larrybud Some pros talk about pinching the ball between the club face and the turf, like Justin Rose in one issue of Golf Digest. So it's not really compressing it against the turf but it's the thought of hitting down into the ball and taking a divot after it?
@fsnicolas Yes; you have the Idea; but your focus is still not to the target where it should be; see "pure strike; shawn clement" (part 1 and 2), "solid contact; shawn clement'; "De-lofting through proper tilt; shawn clement"
Hi Shawn, great videos and tips far and away the best I have seen, can I ask you regarding the one leg drill can I ask you , regarding practising this do you recommend just hitting one legged shots in practise then normal stance on course or a bit of both in practise and on the course? many thanks Patrick in the UK
@paddy28101969 Hey Patrick; Thanks for the question; I respond to this in my DVD series and also use the downhill slope to make the same action for the feel of the brace against the left side in the swing; Best is make 4 shots on one leg to a specific target and feel the way you are unwinding around the inside of the left ankle; then hit 4 shots feet apart and feel the same thing; I have some nice drills to bridge the 2 in the DVD as well that are extremely helpful; Shawn
Great stuff as usual. If this is the second best drill what do you feel was the best. I know it's probably somewhere in the vids but I missed it. Thanks !
Thanks for this Shawn, I was about to give up Golf because i could NEVER hit with my long irons:(... This drill was exactly what i needed and now I'm having fun :) again!! Thanks Again!!
Look, this drill works great for me. I flush and crush the ball. But I can't seem to apply this in a traditional stance. Every time I go back to a normal stance I start mis-hitting again. What am I missing??? It's almost as if I should make the one leg stance my normal stance because it's the only way I can consistently flush the ball.
Is this drill for better ball-striking (compression between the ball and turf) or for power (compressing the ball by the impact of the club face)?
I sometimes hit the ball thin and when that happens with short irons it's usually a disaster. Some recommend consciously shifting the weight forward for a steeper swing ensuring ball and turf hit sequence, which you mentioned should occur naturally. What do you recommend to ensure crisp contact with irons?
@fsnicolas The ball does NOT compress between the face and turf. It's that thought that you want, but the ball immediately gets airborne once it makes contact with the face (unless you top it, that is!)
very similar method to sean foley. hopefully people see this after tiger wins this chevron world challenge and really take notice of you. i think tiger's about ready to crush everyone again. you speak the truth mr. clement!
You should come talk to more of us on my forum! We have a great bunch of guys and gals who are on the same wavelength as you and it makes for terrific reinforcements! All the best for the Holidays and the New Year!
@clemshaw you are my silent coach for years, you are the best teacher in this website! I have some Q concerning this topic, my divot tend to go left with this drill. is it ok? pls check on my swing if you have time. thanks, I will visit you when I have a chance to go north.
@roryhie You are probably playing the ball too far forward and consequently not able to stay behind the shot; you must play the ball well inside the left ankle and get behind it like you were hammering a nail into a door frame; come chat on our forum about it! Thank you for the comment and kind words! Shawn
@clemshaw Could it be that roryhie is swinging across the ball? coming out to in? Sometimes when there is limitations on weight shift i tent to do that (poor stance or on sand). Please confirm. I love this drill. I would play like this but it looks kinda silly on the course.
@rpolancot Have a look at an important video to get you to perform the one leg feel in the downswing of your regular swing; it is called "Downswing weightshift; Shawn Clement"; also see "2008 Golf Swing review; Shawn Clement" part 1 and 2; You will have a light bulb moment! Shawn
Hi Shawn. I think I am finally getting the feeling of the arms falling during the downswing. When I am doing this drill and the feet together drill, one of the primary causes of my failure to maintain balance is over swinging with the arms and upper body using muscular force. If I try and swing hard with my arms, their forward momentum forces my body to move away from the target, and I lose balance. When my arms are passive, I am more easily able to keep the stacked feeling you describe.
I have just bought your dvd because of this video. I have a couple of questions, on which, I would like your opinion.
1 Is the natural golf swing a good option for a senior hi- handicapper? I bought it for interest purposes being an old Rockway member. (explain Kuchar's swing? looks different)
2 Your inside the home drills for the coming Canadian winter months.
@benhog09 I do not advocate the natural swing as depicted by Natural golf at all; Moe did not swing like this at all and he always wondered why they did not listen to him; all they were interested in is selling off a profitable company and then it fell by the wayside...very disappointing because many were in that company to help but the owners would have nothing of it; I will have some drills coming soon in an off season video...Kuchar can play with any swing...:)
@clemshaw What effect does a heavier driver swing weight have on the launch and spin? I have the winnline grip on my driver with 63g shaft and someone told me the swing weight was heavier. Is winnline grips not a good idea? I notice i'm hitting the ball ALOT on the heel. Do you think mabey the heavier swing weight is pushing the driver out, hence hitting the heel?
@JAKEHARRIS281 The thing about preoccupation with ball contact, is it makes you forget the target and makes you ball bound which causes heeled shots as you are swinging out towards the ball; do a couple practice swings letting the tip of the tee be in the way of you whipping out towards your target; then place the ball there and focus on the tip of the tee in the way of the target bound action again!
hey shawn darren here in ireland love all the videos ure doin a great job i have problem were i am swinging the driver 2 fast going back and overswinging as well any tips to slow me down cheers
STACK AND TILT - Shawn: you've got best advice out there. Because of this video, deemphasizing right leg and your using the term "stacked" on a regular basis, some viewers have assumed that you espouse the Stack-and-tilt (SAT) philosophy. The left leg dominant posture/weight distribution would suggest it but Ive never heard you comment on this trend. Many have gotten quick but short-lived results w/ SAT. Can you comment? Thanks
Hey Shawn. When i try this drill im really being pulled out of balance and there is some left lower back/ hip pain?? Is this lack of flexibilty or lack of strength? Even if i use a smooth tempo its still hard to stay balanced.
I'm struggling at this.I had a lesson at the weekend and was told I should be more upright at swing finish i.e more balanced on my left side (front foot). The brace feels ok on my left foot when I'm chipping, when I go to both feet I get too steep at times and I struggle with the concept of both feet being plugged to the ground on per other videos. If the two feet swing should still feel like its on one foot, how does the 'suction-cup' concept work? A little confused at the moment Shawn. Regards
Hey Shawn, this is a great video. I've also seen your video on getting through the ball. I've tried implementing this at the range and it works great but the strange thing is it hasn't carried over to when I use 2 legs. I make excellent contract through the ball on 1 leg but only 1/3 of the time do I make solid contact using both legs. I'm not sure if I'm just not getting through the ball or not bracing on my left side correctly. Too bad I can't swing 1 legged all the time : D
Make sure that your rhythm is sound..."Golf Pro lesson how to get great rhythm" and then make sure the focus is on the "through feel" to your target! "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf" and "golf pro lesson play a shot" Shawn
I can't tell you how much this drill has changed my golf game. For years I had a decent iron game but could not keep a drive in bounds - pure 90 degree slice. Once I focused on the one leg drill, it forced me to stay behind the ball and allow the arms to swing around and allow a good release. Now I'm hitting drives pure and finding many fairways. Thanks, Shawn! BTW - the washing machine analogy is pure genius!
if you have same distance with left leg only, and you say the less variance the better, as the swing is turning on the left axis point, then why swing with two legs normally?
@sandwah9 Because you don't always have flat lies out there right? Uphill shots would be difficult too; see "golf pro lesson leverage uphill", "golf pro lesson get more power and club speed", and "golf pro lesson one leg and feet together update";
because he liked most from what he saw except he wants my stance a little wider and a more dynamic clearing of the hips coming down and through. thinking about it now this makes alot of sence because i have a tendency to loose balance to my tip toes on the follow through. So what do you think of this?
@rstar88105 See my "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn" video; then see "Golf Pro lesson play a shot" and "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf" video; Shawn
The feet together, one leg, and perpetual motion drills have really been a big help enabling me to make a rapid swing improvement. I am beginning to strike fluidly again in just two weeks of practicing with about 90 - 180 balls a day.
The other day one of the MSU golf instructors viewed my swing on a launch monitor and on play back he didnt have a whole lot to say...
The thing that puzzles me is the fact that you tell us to stay on the inside of your left foot.
hmm ?
When a stone is thrown properly you are transfering all of your weight to the inside of the back foot, then you move all the weight with the upper body in sequence towards the front foot.
You make it sound as it is different, but i believe the way to hit a golf ball should be the same logics as when throwing a stone.
Your theory sounds different to the classic swing movements.
Hello Shawn, I have seen a lot of golf instruction and you are one of the best out there. Thanks for your work. Question: When pivoting off of my left leg only, like in your demonstration, my ball striking in excellent, however, when incorporating a weightshift from right leg to left I find myself slicing the ball way too often. Is it a change of axis issue or swing plane issue or something else? Help! Your comments are welcome. Thx
The good results you're experiencing doing the one leg drill are because you are maintaining a consistent centre allowing you to swing without manipulation to the target. Have a look at "Golf pro lesson Tilted Twirl".
Man; I am being very conservative with this distance; ask any of my students who see me at the Learning Center and I can do this with a 7 iron; really really! And left handed too! And then I will introduce you to a few students and assistants of mine who can do it too!!
You are welcome anytime to come see us;
BTW; I play blades with NORMAL LOFTS; not the beefed up cast clubs like the 26 degree 6 iron r7 from Taylor Made...Shawn
What you need to do is make sure that you are not redlining your swing (swinging too hard with the driver) which is a common problem; play the ball a bit more forward and work on your tempo; see "golf pro lesson timing and tempo" and feel like you are swinging the driver like a smooth 7 iron; thank you for the question and comment! Shawn
I first watched this video 5 months ago. The next day I went to the driving range with great skepticism and hit my driver every bit as far off one leg as I do two (275-280). My jaw dropped. I had had a couple of people who came up to me and asked my how am I doing that. The course pro made a snide remark saying that you cant hit a fade off one leg. I opened the club face aimed a little left and hit a nice little cut shot with no effort or manipulation.
I know and understand you; ask any of my students who take lessons with me in person and they will all tell you that this figure is very conservative...;) All the figures I talk about in my DVDs and videos are very conserative; the camera makes the swing seem a bit slower too;
hi shawn, how would i know if i am doing this drill correctly, like maybe how high off the ground the back heel needs to be lifted up, also would this drills be as effective for the short game? Anyway, thanks for explaining torque in the weight shift-Ricky
Have a look at "one leg swing part 2 high and low shots" as well as combine this drill with the "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and feel where your right leg needs to be in order for you to maintain exquisite balance throughout the motion; Shawn
I had a very important tee shot on Sunday. I was at a par 5 where if I hit it pure I could cut the corner over some bunkers and go for it in two on a 550 yard par 5.
RIght before I went to hit it I felt my pulse racing. So I stepped away and decided to hit it one legged. I hit it great and then put my approach shot in a green side bunker.
But the point is that every time on the driving range I feel like I am red lining my driver swing I fall back to this drill to get my rhythm back.
Hey Shawn It appears to me that your hips are clearing at impact, but since your hips are a little closed at address is it safe to say they do not clear at impact as much as they normally do? Would this be a good drill for someone that has trouble clearing the hips at impact? Or since this drill teachings you not to say, would it be the perfect drill to teach someone to clear the hips?
In many ways yes! It teaches you to clear without having to thrust off the right side and without giving up that precious brace; bluejfk has a great tip below and you can also use the feet together drill as well as the uphill shot situation to feel the correct clearing of the hips; the crucial mental focus to achieve this without thinking is in my latest vid: "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf"; Shawn
I saw this drill on your dvd and and it really showed me how it feels to swing into the front leg. I feel like I can strike the ball solidly all day long, but when I go back to two legs I can't find the same feeling. Please help
Earlier today, I played 9 holes with my new golf clubs and only got 10 point. When I came home, I was really frustrated, but then I watched a couple of your videos and went over to the golf course, and played 9 holes again, but this time I got 23 point :)
When im hitting my 4 iron, I almost never get the ball up in the air, but today, I hit the ball far and straight...
I love this drill. I always had a big problem with my hips sliding and this drill finally solved it. Funny thing was that I knew about it when I got your DVD's almost 2 years ago but never gave it a shot. I tried it recently and I finally understood what it was like to rotate around my front leg. Thanks so much!
Nicely done Shawn, AJ Bonar proved the same thing, we are all ruled by two things Weight Shift, Square Clubface, both of these have proved to be nonsense, to me what is easier, trying to time the hitting of a golf ball with hands and arms and a tool, or trying to shift the exact same amount of weight everytime?, the best drill is to place a golf ball behind the one your hitting about 13 inches, it forces you to hit with a downward blow.
On your 2 ball drill there Shawn it seems to be teaching the golferto stay down through the shot, and to not like chicken wing, like to not let the clubhead pass the hands, the 12- 13 inch behind drill teaches you to correctly bring the club abruptly up and with a downward blow like all good Pro's do, our body senses tell us this is too steep, it really does help you hit crips shots, because your eliminating the ground as a problem.
I thought this might be the best place to ask this question. when hitting my driver I frequently lose balance (even if the shot is fairly good). I either find myself falling back to the right leg, or more often, falling back off me heels. I've been watching a reading alot of your teaching and can't figure out what "compensation" I am making that is causing this. Please tell me.
Sometimes it is just a matter of reinforcing the "Home Base" of the swing which is the finish position; see "golf pro lesson finish position" and make this your practice for the next week; great question! Shawn
I discovered this technique yesterday by accident. It really works and improves your shots. I was looking like a pro. Will be following your tutorials, religiously.
You're the best. God sent you to this world to help us out... Thanks God, Thanks Shawn. I used to be 8 hcap and not playing for a while... before I am having trouble to regroove my swing. With your tips now I am better than never and easy to regroove my swing coz your tips is so so so unbelieveable...
thanks for this. although I didnt actually swing off one leg I used the idea of putting more weight on my left and this let me pull my right hip back more.
That forced me to clear my hips on the downswing and i was making terrific contact and getting great ball flight at the range today. i wasnt hitting them fat like i tend to do, but im still putting too much draw on the ball. with a 6 iron i push it out right about 20 yards and then it floats back to the dead center. thanks for the tips!
Now that you are more centered, you just need to work on width in the swing in both the backswing and downswing; see the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" video for this;
In alot of golf instruction there is a tendancy to recommend a wide stance. This is death to the beginner or intermediate. If you don't want to use one leg on the course narrow up your stance and your hips and legs will react much more naturally to the swinging of the club.then widen your stance as you become better or don't.Bobby Jones played w a narrow stance.
What I don't get, is if this one legged swing is more accurate and even longer then a two legged, what is the advantage to using two legs? Why do we not see any pros playing with one leg all the time?
Golf is many things for many people; one major thing on people's minds is the way they look on the golf course; they don't want to be a target for criticism; others don't care and I have many students that continue to have success with this drill as they always have it as a back-up when things get a bit too loose; it is great to have options! Thanks for your comment and question! Shawn
You sound like a frustrated golfer, embrace what Shawn is teaching you. I have and I can hit it 195 as well from 1 leg. It works, you just have to learn how to do it properly.
ok tell you what...if i go to the driving range over the weekend il try it....the only reason i would see this working tho is if a golfer was getting to close to there chest when on the throwswing...and moving the right leg causes the stomach to open up a bit..creating more room...however i cant say anything because ive not tried it yet so il defo give it a go
Shawn, I have been religiously practicing all of what you are preaching. And the results have been great.
One question I have, is the shoulder alignment when doing this drill. When I get in the braced tilt, my shoulders are slightly closed to the target line. Is this correct, or should I have them PARALLEL?
Thanks for answering, does this closed shoulder position also go when you do your normal swing with two legs? I am assuming so. Reason I ask is my playing partners have commented that my shoulders are closed and pointing right.
I am hitting better shots using this technique than my regular swing. Maybe it is because there is less moving parts? Does anyone use this for normal play (even though it looks a little unusual to play with one leg)?
Many of my students play this way by choice and don't care about the way they look; they just say they are doing a drill that I gave them to do when they play with others and they are not only left alone, they are asked where they can learn how! :) See "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 for a great follow up to this; Shawn
Shawn, this drill you've posted is very practical and effective. So after practicing this and a combination of a few other drills a few thousand times on the range and finally getting the right feel this drill aims to do, I can consistently hit my 5 iron (standard lie, loft, shaft length, DG R300 shaft) 170-175yrds. As you've demonstrated in your video, you're hitting it 195+. I would like to just hit it 185yrds with the 5 iron. What else can I do to get more out of my swing? Thanks.
There are a ton of factors here; grip and the way you hinge in the backswing are big ones; then you have the range of motion in your turn and the way you swing THROUGH THE BALL; I would go through the dvd and make sure all your ducks are in a row; then you can judge for yourself if that extra ten yards are in the cards; Shawn
Shawn, I have an order in progress for the DVDs but have already looked at tilted spiral....It feels pretty comfortable and good transition from one leg drill. Its making sense to me now. One question - Why do people suggest you are teaching stack & Tilt? It doesn't appear to be anything like that?
Correct! When you see all of the DVDs, you will see that this is the most sound way to swing the golf club; it works in harmony with physics, anatomy and neurology which saves you energy on the psychology in the long run; S&T cannot be as efficient in many situations such as ball below feet and uphill shots...Great of you to see the differences! Shawn
Shawn, Great drill...and I hit clean, straight and consistently with one leg. Problem I am not sure I have the bottle to go out on the course and play on one leg. I am pretty clear that I would shoot a better score as there is minimal loss in distance!!! How do I progress this?
To progress, go to the "Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 series and see the "Golf Pro Lesson learn your golf machine" as well as the "Golf Pro lesson be a solid ball striker"
If you don't have the dvds yet; I strongly recommend to get the whole picture...Shawn
Thanks for the response to the last guy; I guess you scarred him off because he removed his comment! He even closed his account! LOL I did not get a chance to see it but it is not important...:)
No worries Shawn, thx so much for putting all the good stuff on youtube! The swing has changed my game tremendously (esp with more hip turn now) and my shot quality has never been better before. So, thanks again! Greetings from Singapore.
Shawn, you've now turned me into a left leg golfer.
I already play all my short game shots with the weight on the front/ left leg and after trying this drill I 'm doing the same with my long game shots.
Even the Driver goes so straight and true its like magic.
I'm thinking its probably fixed my sway and injected more rotation into my swing.
I tend to move my upper body forward in the downswing ...right foot on toe at impact (5 hdcp 150 ball speed driver). So tough to keep right foot flat at impact. Love this drill but struggle with feet together drill.
Trying to reconcile one foot drill where right foot on its toe throughout the swing with the idea of keeping the right foot flat at impact. Know both will help my swing but on surface appear at odds. Your thoughts?
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier; just so freakin busy these days! :) They are not at odds because of the change in centre of gravity; see the "One Leg Part 2 High and low shots" as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson on the slopes" which will really help to balance out the swing! Shawn
Of course my DVD will clear up a whole host of your questions in the priority sequenced 4 hours!
You are welcome and you are looking at one of the best together with My "Feet together drill" and my "perpetual motion drill"...you can use these for everything, every shot, in combination with each other etc...
My dvd is structured in a way to prioritize all of them...
Shawn- I have to tell you this is the tried and true method to fixing one's swing. I use this as the teaching video when people ask me how do I swing so well using one leg. I use your comments about the the washing machine, i mention the torque, and the best is when I show them how swinging on one foot makes one hit the same spot everytime. This is my anchor to making golf better by giving me a system to follow that works, thanks for the common sense approach to hitting a straight ball - Tim
I have a bad swing: I swing mostly with my arms. Not voluntarily, of course. I learned like this and have a hard time getting rid of it.
Anyway, I tried this one-leg drill and I was able to hit some balls up to 20 yards farther! Very surprising! I supposed it forced me to have a better balance and to have my weight forward.
I want to get rid of my arms swing. So the question is: how can I tell my body to use the lower body in the downswing? Any tips or other drill I can try?
the key here with the arms is to feel like you are giving the control completely to gravity; check "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson swing plane" to get that drift; then go to "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and tempo update"; I would highly recommend you get my DVD as it will show you step by step how to get to the full feel of this technique without missing anything important...
Thanks for the reply back....Today I went to a Dome too hit a bucket of balls and an instructor was there as soon as he saw my left heel coming off the ground in my back swing.
He advised me too keep my heel and leg down throuhgt out the swing for more power but i feel this restricts my hips from fully turning.
I'm so confused with everyone having different swing thoughts.
Sorry I did not see your comment before; very good question and here is the answer: Go to "Golf Pro Lesson 2008 Golf Swing Review" part 1 and 2 and I have both options which are up to the individual; the key is to have enough backswing to feel like you can whip the snot out of the club through the ball and towards the target...and I have many videos that pertain to the left heel coming up as a thing you want to do to feel the right timing in the swing;check "timing and tempo update"
Yes you can use this with the driver; just play the ball a bit more forward in the stance and that is it! When you perfect this drill you will bomb the driver! And my DVD is already shipping if you are asking about an order for yourself; just go to the "My DVD" page of my website listed in the description of all my videos; All the best! Shawn
Shawn...nevermind, tried the 1-leg drill again today and it worked great...hitting my 7 iron 175 very straight on a simulator, balance seemed OK...just needed a couple days practice...amazed my friends though, THANKS
There is 4 hours on 3 discs all filmed from scratch and all in priority sequence so that you can organize your thoughts and not miss anything important; then I also have a few lessons that are not on You Tube and the 3rd DVD has all shots executed on course from the driver to the putter...Shawn
i was just wondering which of david leadbetters dvds would you find the best im a junior golfer!because im aloud pick on of the dvds for christmas and was just wondering which would you find the best?
Did you get mine yet? Because I would very much recommend mine before anyone's and I am not being bias at all! Really!
I would then get a copy of the "Inner Game Of Tennis" book by Timothy Gallway which is very easy to translate to golf and will help you internalize my techniques for best results; do not get the inner game of golf by the same author as it is not as good...many top rated college players who were Leadbetter students are now using my techniques by the way...:)
You have earned my respect by just recommending the "Inner Game Of Tennis". I played Billiard for 10 years, and several pro-pool players recomended the book. I have read it twice, and get something new every time. I should be called "The Mental Game for All Sports" I golf now, and will read it again to apply it to Golf. Great instructions! please keep them coming!
Nothing prevents you from playing this way; many have adopted this way of playing; they key though is to feel that your weight pressure stays in the inside of the left ankle during the whole motion and your right leg is there as a counter balancing unit; otherwise, it is a key aspect of the downswing of the full swing to feel;
hi shaun could u go on my user and see what im doing wrong in my golf swing!!! i feel if i have to stop in my backswing because i may overswing?? so could u please check out my video!!! thanks!
Shawn, this is a great drill. I was hitting some balls at the range tonight (conventionally); after a while I tired out and began having trouble locating a good swing..... This drill snapped me right out of that funk (although I still couldnt find my two-legged shot!)
I seem to be a lot more consistent/accurate/stronger in my swing on the ONE legged swing. If I were to keep practicing this, wouldn't I get too accustomed to hitting this way over the normal stance? I was also wondering if it is absolutely necessary to now practice with both legs (weight properly distributed). What are the pros/cons of 1 legged swing in terms of Aim/Consistency (I seem to be very accurate and consistent), and do some pros have this stance similar to this in their real game?
Hey great comment and question! The one leg drill just makes it more difficult to do uphill shots; if you play on a flat course you will have no issues and can play with this drill and very well as you found out; To round out your game you want to feel the leverage from the right side and practice the uphill shots using the "Leverage Power" video; then blend it together with the "Tilted Spirale" and the "Downswing Weightshift"...But if your swing feels out of sorts, go back to this drill here!
Hi Shawn, firstly thanks for your video that helped me to solve a lot of problem. I have a question for this "one leg drill". Do you mean the weight should be on the left inside feet when I am on top backswing? But I was always told that the weight should be shifted to the right side when backswing. Pls advice. Thanks. Jessie from Hong Kong
The key here is not shifting the centers in the swing; many golfers have the wrong perception of what a weight shift is; have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson proper weight shift" video and you will understand; Shawn
this is the single most definitive game changer i have ever tried, i cannot thank you enough for this video and instruction, i was ready to quit and this video turned my game around, thank you again - tim
hi shwawn from germany. still working on your drills and think to understand the basics of the swing. i perform much better now, sometimes to much. ( :-) in cause of the length of my hits ) had 140 metres before and now up to 160 with 7 iron! question: the slice is past actually. but mostly i hit the ball about 20 degree to the left (light draw, hook or straight) any idea what is wrong? my swing plane is still to flat, i know. do you think out to in move still? div. are mostly straight. thanks
Thanks a lot this has really helped me stop my side to side sway. Now my only big problem left is getting overanxious and rushing. Feeling that perfect practice swing then thinking it is going to be fantastic lifting my eyes up to soon. My main problem is i cannot hit through the ball and divot after the ball.
Don't worry about the perfect shot; you should find it easy to hit a draw with the one leg drill and closer to straight with feet together; solid contact would be good too! :)
You should not hit fades unless they are intentional;

Siceone 2 months ago
@Siceone Check the date! This came out before I ever knew about S&T and it really is not the same thing at all; this is the real definition of what stacked is; not about fictitious centres but stacking the centre of gravity of your body properly and keeping a solid platform under the swing of the arm club unit. Shawn

@Siceone Its just an old drill to get great compression and proper impact position. It's a very old drill. My dad was doing it in the 1970's.

oh man yesterday I did the first one legged drill I'd done in months...5-iron I'm used to it going maybe 185 on a good strike, 175-180 average. After about 4 good shots with the one leg, the next one just felt like it exploded off the face and easily carried 195 yards! I couldn't replicate that shot again by the time I had run out of balls, but the one legged drill DOES work and it IS EFFICIENT.
dschultz6072 9 months ago
Yes but you dont hit golf ball off one leg so why are you showing this. Didnt look like 195 to me! Its like you are showing a whole swing but you are confusing starting golfers! You are just showing a good follow through.

@clemshaw Thanks!
fsnicolas 9 months ago
@larrybud Some pros talk about pinching the ball between the club face and the turf, like Justin Rose in one issue of Golf Digest. So it's not really compressing it against the turf but it's the thought of hitting down into the ball and taking a divot after it?
fsnicolas 9 months ago
@fsnicolas Yes; you have the Idea; but your focus is still not to the target where it should be; see "pure strike; shawn clement" (part 1 and 2), "solid contact; shawn clement'; "De-lofting through proper tilt; shawn clement"

Hi Shawn, great videos and tips far and away the best I have seen, can I ask you regarding the one leg drill can I ask you , regarding practising this do you recommend just hitting one legged shots in practise then normal stance on course or a bit of both in practise and on the course? many thanks Patrick in the UK
paddy28101969 8 months ago
@paddy28101969 Hey Patrick; Thanks for the question; I respond to this in my DVD series and also use the downhill slope to make the same action for the feel of the brace against the left side in the swing; Best is make 4 shots on one leg to a specific target and feel the way you are unwinding around the inside of the left ankle; then hit 4 shots feet apart and feel the same thing; I have some nice drills to bridge the 2 in the DVD as well that are extremely helpful; Shawn

SoulSurferGS8 10 months ago
Look, this drill works great for me. I flush and crush the ball. But I can't seem to apply this in a traditional stance. Every time I go back to a normal stance I start mis-hitting again. What am I missing??? It's almost as if I should make the one leg stance my normal stance because it's the only way I can consistently flush the ball.
ckaiser1020 10 months ago
Is this drill for better ball-striking (compression between the ball and turf) or for power (compressing the ball by the impact of the club face)?
I sometimes hit the ball thin and when that happens with short irons it's usually a disaster. Some recommend consciously shifting the weight forward for a steeper swing ensuring ball and turf hit sequence, which you mentioned should occur naturally. What do you recommend to ensure crisp contact with irons?
Thanks!
fsnicolas 10 months ago
@fsnicolas The ball does NOT compress between the face and turf. It's that thought that you want, but the ball immediately gets airborne once it makes contact with the face (unless you top it, that is!)

Thank you for the comment and kind words! Shawn
clemshaw 11 months ago
@clemshaw Could it be that roryhie is swinging across the ball? coming out to in? Sometimes when there is limitations on weight shift i tent to do that (poor stance or on sand). Please confirm. I love this drill. I would play like this but it looks kinda silly on the course.
rpolancot 11 months ago
@rpolancot Have a look at an important video to get you to perform the one leg feel in the downswing of your regular swing; it is called "Downswing weightshift; Shawn Clement"; also see "2008 Golf Swing review; Shawn Clement" part 1 and 2; You will have a light bulb moment! Shawn
clemshaw 11 months ago

2 Your inside the home drills for the coming Canadian winter months.
benhog09 1 year ago

JAKEHARRIS281 1 year ago
@JAKEHARRIS281 The thing about preoccupation with ball contact, is it makes you forget the target and makes you ball bound which causes heeled shots as you are swinging out towards the ball; do a couple practice swings letting the tip of the tee be in the way of you whipping out towards your target; then place the ball there and focus on the tip of the tee in the way of the target bound action again!

TAMMYWISEMAN 1 year ago

Hard to believe, isn't it? ;-)
But I tried this drill at the beginning of the season when my swing was bad and with the one leg swing, I gained 20 yards!
Now that my swing is better, I get about the same distance, 190 yards with a 5 iron, on one or two legs.
Try it, you might be surprised.

This does work.

In many ways yes! Nicely done Shawn, AJ Bonar proved the same thing, we are all ruled by two things Weight Shift, Square Clubface, both of these have proved to be nonsense, to me what is easier, trying to time the hitting of a golf ball with hands and arms and a tool, or trying to shift the exact same amount of weight everytime?, the best drill is to place a golf ball behind the one your hitting about 13 inches, it forces you to hit with a downward blow.
gripnrip28 2 years ago
Thanks ! See "golf pro lesson through the ball"; you will see in minute 6 my 2 ball drill where you hit both in the air with the same swing; Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
On your 2 ball drill there Shawn it seems to be teaching the golferto stay down through the shot, and to not like chicken wing, like to not let the clubhead pass the hands, the 12- 13 inch behind drill teaches you to correctly bring the club abruptly up and with a downward blow like all good Pro's do, our body senses tell us this is too steep, it really does help you hit crips shots, because your eliminating the ground as a problem.
gripnrip28 2 years ago

thanks for this. although I didnt actually swing off one leg I used the idea of putting more weight on my left and this let me pull my right hip back more.

Now that you are more centered, you just need to work on width in the swing in both the backswing and downswing; see the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" video for this;

clemshaw 2 years ago
In alot of golf instruction there is a tendancy to recommend a wide stance. This is death to the beginner or intermediate. If you don't want to use one leg on the course narrow up your stance and your hips and legs will react much more naturally to the swinging of the club.then widen your stance as you become better or don't.Bobby Jones played w a narrow stance.

Golf is many things for many people; one major thing on people's minds is the way they look on the golf course; they don't want to be a target for criticism; others don't care and I have many students that continue to have success with this drill as they always have it as a back-up when things get a bit too loose; it is great to have options! Shawn, I have been religiously practicing all of what you are preaching. And the results have been great.
One question I have, is the shoulder alignment when doing this drill. When I get in the braced tilt, my shoulders are slightly closed to the target line. Is this correct, or should I have them PARALLEL?
Thanks I appreciate all you do here!

I wish I had seen this before I went to the range today! I wasted my time and money trying to thrust my left hip on the downswing.

Shawn, I have an order in progress for the DVDs but have already looked at tilted spiral....It feels pretty comfortable and good transition from one leg drill. Its making sense to me now. One question - Why do people suggest you are teaching stack & Tilt? It doesn't appear to be anything like that?
ashbylad69 2 years ago

How do I progress this?
ashbylad69 2 years ago
I know; great huh!

You have no clue man. His teaching has transformed my game and helped many others. To me, this is the best drill i have ever tried and tested.
That shot looked solid to me. You owe him an apology!

Greetings from Singapore.
golfer7381 2 years ago
Shawn, you've now turned me into a left leg golfer.
I already play all my short game shots with the weight on the front/ left leg and after trying this drill I 'm doing the same with my long game shots.
Even the Driver goes so straight and true its like magic.
I'm thinking its probably fixed my sway and injected more rotation into my swing.
Thanks for the tip.Cheers,

You say this is the second best drill in golf.
Whats the first lol?

It is actually a toss up between "feet together drill" and this one; these 2 amaze my students every single day; they are gold! Shawn

Shawn,
I tend to move my upper body forward in the downswing ...right foot on toe at impact (5 hdcp 150 ball speed driver).
Thanks so much for great videos- Jason
winsorj 2 years ago
Hey Jason;

Shawn: Question: Is this basically a "stack and tilt" method?
Thanks for posting the great videos!

Shawn - Could you tell me which drill you consider the best drill in golf?
btw, thanks for the amazing amount of free content on youtube, respect!
w6yrsn 2 years ago
You are welcome and you are looking at one of the best together with My "Feet together drill" and my "perpetual motion drill"...you can use these for everything, every shot, in combination with each other etc...
My dvd is structured in a way to prioritize all of them...
Thanks for the question! Shawn

Thanks!
Jordrok 2 years ago
the key here with the arms is to feel like you are giving the control completely to gravity; check "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson swing plane" to get that drift; then go to "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and tempo update"; I would highly recommend you get my DVD as it will show you step by step how to get to the full feel of this technique without missing anything important...
Thanks for the question! Shawn

Thanks for answering so quickly! I have already learned many things by watching just a couple of your videos, so why not go all the way!
I have just ordered your DVD. I can't wait to receive it and learn more. I certainly need help with my full swing...
Thanks again!

Hi Shawn
Thanks for the reply back....Today I went to a Dome too hit a bucket of balls and an instructor was there as soon as he saw my left heel coming off the ground in my back swing.
He advised me too keep my heel and leg down throuhgt out the swing for more power but i feel this restricts my hips from fully turning.
I'm so confused with everyone having different swing thoughts.
Can you help please.
Andre.
sookme1964 3 years ago
Hey Andre:
Sorry I did not see your comment before; very good question and here is the answer: Go to "Golf Pro Lesson 2008 Golf Swing Review" part 1 and 2 and I have both options which are up to the individual; the key is to have enough backswing to feel like you can whip the snot out of the club through the ball and towards the target...and I have many videos that pertain to the left heel coming up as a thing you want to do to feel the right timing in the swing;check "timing and tempo update"
clemshaw 2 years ago
Hi Shawn
Again thanks for the great Video. Can not wait for the DVD.Can you use this drill with the driver?
Andre
sookme1964 3 years ago
Hi Andre; thanks for the question and comment!
Shawn

i ordered mine many months ago and still back to it on regular basis.

how many of the videos from youtube are on your dvd?? and how much lessons are on it?
golfrules08 3 years ago
There is 4 hours on 3 discs all filmed from scratch and all in priority sequence so that you can organize your thoughts and not miss anything important; then I also have a few lessons that are not on You Tube and the 3rd DVD has all shots executed on course from the driver to the putter...Shawn

well shaun !!
i was just wondering which of david leadbetters dvds would you find the best im a junior golfer!because im aloud pick on of the dvds for christmas and was just wondering which would you find the best?
golfrules08 3 years ago
Hey Bud;
Did you get mine yet? Because I would very much recommend mine before anyone's and I am not being bias at all! Really!
I would then get a copy of the "Inner Game Of Tennis" book by Timothy Gallway which is very easy to translate to golf and will help you internalize my techniques for best results; do not get the inner game of golf by the same author as it is not as good...many top rated college players who were Leadbetter students are now using my techniques by the way...:)
clemshaw 3 years ago
Shaun,
You have earned my respect by just recommending the "Inner Game Of Tennis". I played Billiard for 10 years, and several pro-pool players recomended the book. I have read it twice, and get something new every time. I should be called "The Mental Game for All Sports" I golf now, and will read it again to apply it to Golf. Great instructions! please keep them coming!

Then why not just put all of your weight on your left foor at address and not shift it all during the swing?
glasson65 3 years ago
Nothing prevents you from playing this way; many have adopted this way of playing; they key though is to feel that your weight pressure stays in the inside of the left ankle during the whole motion and your right leg is there as a counter balancing unit; otherwise, it is a key aspect of the downswing of the full swing to feel;
Thanks for the comment;

hi shaun could u go on my user and see what im doing wrong in my golf swing!!! i feel if i have to stop in my backswing because i may overswing?? so could u please check out my video!!! thanks!

Shawn, this is a great drill. I was hitting some balls at the range tonight (conventionally); after a while I tired out and began having trouble locating a good swing..... This drill snapped me right out of that funk (although I still couldnt find my two-legged shot!)
Many thanks, this gives me hope.

What are the pros/cons of 1 legged swing in terms of Aim/Consistency (I seem to be very accurate and consistent), and do some pros have this stance similar to this in their real game?
jackbored1 3 years ago
on one leg you cant hit it from the slope.. maybe...
budimard 3 years ago
Hey great comment and question! The one leg drill just makes it more difficult to do uphill shots; if you play on a flat course you will have no issues and can play with this drill and very well as you found out; To round out your game you want to feel the leverage from the right side and practice the uphill shots using the "Leverage Power" video; then blend it together with the "Tilted Spirale" and the "Downswing Weightshift"...But if your swing feels out of sorts, go back to this drill here!
clemshaw 3 years ago
Hi Shawn, firstly thanks for your video that helped me to solve a lot of problem. I have a question for this "one leg drill". Do you mean the weight should be on the left inside feet when I am on top backswing? But I was always told that the weight should be shifted to the right side when backswing. Pls advice. Thanks. Jessie from Hong Kong
wyyjessie 3 years ago
Hi Jessie!
The key here is not shifting the centers in the swing; many golfers have the wrong perception of what a weight shift is; have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson proper weight shift" video and you will understand; Shawn
clemshaw 3 years ago
Loved your feet together drill. With this one I find I tend to pull the ball way left? Any comment on that?
And what if you did the same with the back leg? Kept the weight on the back leg rather than the front?

hi shwawn from germany. still working on your drills and think to understand the basics of the swing. i perform much better now, sometimes to much. ( :-) in cause of the length of my hits ) had 140 metres before and now up to 160 with 7 iron! question: the slice is past actually. but mostly i hit the ball about 20 degree to the left (light draw, hook or straight) any idea what is wrong? my swing plane is still to flat, i know. do you think out to in move still? div. are mostly straight. thanks
slicingtiger 3 years ago
Thanks a lot this has really helped me stop my side to side sway. Now my only big problem left is getting overanxious and rushing. Feeling that perfect practice swing then thinking it is going to be fantastic lifting my eyes up to soon. My main problem is i cannot hit through the ball and divot after the ball.

Is it important to hit straight balls doing both one leg and feet together drill at the range? Or just make nice contact with fades and draws?
slashdazz 3 years ago
Great question!
Don't worry about the perfect shot; you should find it easy to hit a draw with the one leg drill and closer to straight with feet together; solid contact would be good too! :)
You should not hit fades unless they are intentional;
