i think he's refering to the vast numbers of left-wing voters who are dissatisfied with the right-wing new labour government. these people remain a powerful force, provided people such as ourselves remain politically active, rather than cynical.

the public are not to the left of the Labour government, they are busy going over to a right wing Tory party in their droves.
