The Pagliacci joke is a revelation about final reckoning. It is not about a failure of Pagliacci, but rather the failure of people who take a superior caring force for granted, and, indeed, take advantage of that force, and, ultimately, objectify that force. It is the revelation that that superior force is not an object, but a person with it's own feelings. This revelation is the final reckoning because everybody's bluff is called and they must answer to Pagliacci, so to speak.
This is why heroes don't exist in the real world. Pagliacci, the sad clown. Found the will to help others, yet lacked the skill to help himself. That realization made Pagliacci's life's work a joke, in turn making Paglaicci the joke.
Heroes risk their lives without thinking. If they sacrifice themselves, no one gives a shit. Doesn't change anything. They move on. It's a foolish decision to die for a society unwilling to change. That's why heroes ARE the punchline. Society gets the last laugh
The Comedian decided to become a parody of the evil that he saw in the world and lived. He soon realized that he was the one that could'nt withstand the evil that existed and the evil that he himself had created. Since he was the only superhero that told jokes about everything when people were down they looked to him as the guy that cheered people up. So when he finally realized the evils of society and man, he had no one to go to to cheer him up because he was the comedian (Pagliacci).
He was such a comedian that he portrayed his jokes through savage ways which he deiscovered every human was in nature. He was so misunderstood by the other heroes and people that he didnt even have time to make friends, that his only true friend was his worst enemy, Moloch. Moloch was the only one that visited his grave to leave a bouquet of roses, no hero or anybody else did.
This makes him even more like Pagliacci because not only does he not have a clown to cheer him up, he doesnt even have friends to help him (thats why he even went to Moloch's house in the middle of the night when he was drunk to speak to him his feelings). He had no one to go to not even himself, not even the Pagliacci, The Comedian.

I think the joke is alot like the graffiti, which was sprayed on the glass of the store. "Who watches the watchmen".
