If people don't believe that the economy is good even if it is perfectly fine, they will stop spending, buying, investing etc. Our perception of the economy directly affects the economy, that's why a public official can't just say the economy sucks, because it could have a negative effect on the economy.

But then rumors started floating around that they were having liquidity problems and boom, nobody wanted to even touch them.
