This song was written for the funeral a guy from Grindavík who was taking a short-cut through a yard and jumped over the fence and straight into an empty swimming pool and died.
Go in peace my beloved friend Our father will keep you. Throughout my life you'll be near me Never will I forget you. Then we will wake with the sun in the morning Then we will wake with the sun in the morning -- Then we will wake with the sun in the morning Then we will wake with the sun in the morning
My Lord, my father light of life Let your grace shine so gentle My strength you are the rose of my life Take away my dark fear. You will wake him with the sun in the morning You will wake him with the sun in the morning -- My father allow the sun of life to light up a grieving heart with you I find peace and shelter then let your light so bright wake him with the sun in the morning wake him with the sun in the morning --
Never mind the religious questions. What matters that here is an artist pouring out his heart to us. We should respect that and thank him for showing us the honour. Here's a fairly literal translation: Where the angels sing that's where you sleep Sleep in the peaceful deep We who still live we live in faith that the light so bright and clear will wake you with the sun in the morning will wake you with the sun in the morning --
ótrúlega magnaður texti.. Bubbi þú bjóst til ódauðlegt lag hér.. svo lengi sem íslenska er töluð mun þetta lag lifa í kirkjum landsins þegar sorgarstund er..
I demand an english translation, also this is awesome. Is it just me or does iceland have much more slower and meaningful songs compared to the Faroer Islands, Norway, Sweden and Denmark with their brutal viking metal? Iceland looks really different isn't it that Iceland is (more) catholic and the others are heathens? I know barely something about iceland, I can only read it correctly. I love metal like no other but these songs are very appreciated here!
@dangerboy551 I can see that you have never heard of swedish old folksongs, and please don't call my people heathens just becasue we're atheist and not religious.
@audveltadmuna Several studies have found Sweden to be one of the most atheist countries in the world. 23% of Swedish citizens responded that "they believe there is a God", whereas 53% answered that "they believe there is some sort of spirit or life force" and 23% that "they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, God, or life force". This, according to the survey, would make Swedes the third least religious people in the 27-member European Union. Source wikipedia.
@Draugoul There's nothing wrong with being a heathen. I see more wrong with being athiest, then being a heathen. I'd rather walk with my ancestors then spend the rest of my life believing in nothing.
@Draugoul Nothing wrong with being a heathen. It is a religion in itself and the person who called you heathen for not believing in god is stupid. If you don't believe in a higher power you're nonreligious. If you're against believing in higher power then you're an atheist.

We were brought up nominally Lutheran like you Icelanders. But what is funny how seminal moments like death, grief, love and weddings drive us back to the Church even though we say we are not religious. Why, as much as try to ignore our religion, do we come back to it again and again? This song brings out much emotion and says, even if our institutional church may fail, a God force is very much in us.
Fuck the church, it has nothing to do with it... We only do weddings and other sfuff in churches because it's tradition and usually a big place to gather in.
And why grief takes us there is because we can get desperate or lost and that's what religion feeds on, spoiling the minds of people who don't know they're being deceived.
... so in conclusion, I'm a big hater on religion(not the religious, except for some idiots)
Yea but we have our beliefs and its good for us to have faith in somthing cos even if god dosent exist it can makes us good and beter persons and most of us dont hate atheists like you and the non belivers are using theyr stubborness to take the church down but still we do nothing about it even if we are moreand why should you do weddings if you dont belive in jesus or god or somthing you can anyway go to the sheriff and write on some file that you are in marriage with this woman
BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING TRADITION!!... I just "said" so in the comment you apparently read.
Anyway --- I don't hate theists in general, I hate religion. There's a difference. The only theists I "know" and hate are the type of ignorant, generalizing bigots that think they are better because they believe in something solely on Faith.
I don't think faith makes you a good person. If you want to be good you will do Good Things and vice versa, no one becomes good like it's a choir or something
Yea i meant that you hated like catholic pepole or lutheran pepole and i was meaning that we didnt hate atheists for hating our religion and us for beliving in it and yes many good pepole are athiests but pepole like you should not really care about this if you dont belive in god and you should know more about religion and what to belive or not BEFORE you starting saying shit about that and maybe when somewone in your family dies you soon really will think about that further.
Again, I hate some of them for simply being assholes and not the belief part, as I find that your comments suggest.
Religion only feeds of peoples desperation or misery by luring them in with the false promise that they will gain something or that the only way a loved one will survive in their minds is if they join in to the irrationality. At least I can take the world for what it is instead of believing in something because it makes me feel better.
he is singing about the passing of his cousin Örlygur Aron Sturlusson and about how he is being passed into gods arms but i don't think you should think of this as a religious song as he most likely created this song over grief, but if i were to say this was of any religion i would say it was Lutheranism although it is basicly an offspring of christianity and most icelandic people are of that religion, but i still wouldn't think to much about religon just enjoy the song:)
@beebobox I was born into Lutheranism as a German, and never particularly religous institutionally, but why is it that at critical moments of life like death we are drawn back to "church." Is it, and this is just my curious nature wondering, that amidst all our denyal of "religion", that a certain God-force is just built into us? i
@jeff62rey I would say more than anything there is always an uncertainty of what happens to us after we die, therefore people choose religion to feel secure that they aren't going to die. The promise of being given access to heaven even in your final moments if you pray for forgiveness and accept Jesus would be a tempting offer.
@jeff62rey yes, I think it is. I am in a someway similar situation. I used to be a passionate believer, then I found I cannot live like that any more (for personal reasons) and now am wondering whether I should continue to be Christian or not - and find that it seems to be a place reserved for God in us and that we need that last certainty in ultimate moments like death. I will need the certainty that a loving God will accept me when I die.
@NotOnlySelfLover There is constant struggle between intellect and heart. And what is most disconcerting is that even some once hardened atheists have changed their minds and their arguments go out the window. Why does religion, which according to so many pundits for hundreds of years, should have died out by now, is still strong and emerging in different ways, such as with the Islamic faith. I am thinking more and more reason alone cannot solve it all and we still have a place in the pew.
@jeff62rey it's just a cultural habit or tradition really, there aren't very many non-religious groups that handle funerals/weddings, that is changing slowly but surely and hopefully it'll catch on imo.
there is no god-force built into us per se, but we are programmed in a way to impart on non active agents an intelligence.
example: the wind blows the door open while you're in the kitchen and you yell '"who's there", the reason why we have this in our "natural programming" is easily explained
@beebobox This is of course just my own experience and opinion which I wish in no way to impose on any, but that "god-force" has demonstrated a bit more than just "wind opening a door," in my life. I thought I was an avowed atheist, having studied all the classical arguments, etc, but these "spiritual" experiences whithin the Eastern Orthodox Church have men rethinking. I wouldn't say I am convinced, but now open. I guess you have not been in my shoes.
hann bubbi er awesome the songs makes me thing about my granpapa R.I.P granpapa R.I.P mj and the icelandic goverment can go to hell XD im icelandic and since that misshap with the loan everything turned upsidedown for us XD
@scissorbutterfly Where the angels sing, there you shall sleep Sleeping the deeps The others that live, live for the believes That the true light so bright I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning My Lord my father, the light of my life Let the brace shine so gently Your are my strength, the rose of my life You shall banish away all my worries
I really love this song, and I'm not even a Christian.
though I would like to find some lyrics of this track on the Internet.
but unfortunately I didn't succeed in finding some lyrics.
Icelandic is a quite magnificent language.
I am learning it, but it's difficult, I guess the tracks I have for myself in Icelandic are the only way in holding a clear perception of how it should be spoken.
@annanukior My lord hand to a sorrow soul Cool hand to dying soul Turn of the pain of the heart break away deaths pulling I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning I will wake you up when the sun is shining in the morning Leave in peace my dear friend My father will protect you forever and all eternity Never I shall you forget We shall wake up when the sun is shining in the morning (5x ending) And you are welcome :)

We were brought up nominally Lutheran like you Icelanders. But what is funny how seminal moments like death, grief, love and weddings drive us back to the Church even though we say we are not religious. Why, as much as try to ignore our religion, do we come back to it again and again? This song brings out much emotion and says, even if our institutional church may fail, a God force is very much in us.
jeff62rey 1 year ago
@jeff62rey
DavySigfusson 11 months ago
@DavySigfusson
RGBRYN 11 months ago
@RGBRYN
DavySigfusson 11 months ago
@DavySigfusson
RGBRYN 11 months ago
@RGBRYN I think you should both stop talking about something unrelevant to the song itself and just listen to this beautiful song
911Dagur 11 months ago
@RGBRYN
Again, I hate some of them for simply being assholes and not the belief part, as I find that your comments suggest.
Religion only feeds of peoples desperation or misery by luring them in with the false promise that they will gain something or that the only way a loved one will survive in their minds is if they join in to the irrationality. At least I can take the world for what it is instead of believing in something because it makes me feel better.

hendrikmarine 1 year ago
@hendrikmarine
he is singing about the passing of his cousin Örlygur Aron Sturlusson and about how he is being passed into gods arms but i don't think you should think of this as a religious song as he most likely created this song over grief, but if i were to say this was of any religion i would say it was Lutheranism although it is basicly an offspring of christianity and most icelandic people are of that religion, but i still wouldn't think to much about religon just enjoy the song:)
kristoferarn 1 year ago
@kristoferarn "most icelandic people are of that religion"
by default you are signed into that church as you are born, most people in iceland are not religious.
so to remind people....
Segja sig úr þjóðkirkjunni, hægt að gera á netinu núna ::)

@beebobox I was born into Lutheranism as a German, and never particularly religous institutionally, but why is it that at critical moments of life like death we are drawn back to "church." Is it, and this is just my curious nature wondering, that amidst all our denyal of "religion", that a certain God-force is just built into us? i
jeff62rey 1 year ago
@jeff62rey I would say more than anything there is always an uncertainty of what happens to us after we die, therefore people choose religion to feel secure that they aren't going to die. The promise of being given access to heaven even in your final moments if you pray for forgiveness and accept Jesus would be a tempting offer.
MaximumKillcount 1 year ago
@jeff62rey yes, I think it is. I am in a someway similar situation. I used to be a passionate believer, then I found I cannot live like that any more (for personal reasons) and now am wondering whether I should continue to be Christian or not - and find that it seems to be a place reserved for God in us and that we need that last certainty in ultimate moments like death. I will need the certainty that a loving God will accept me when I die.
NotOnlySelfLover 1 year ago
@NotOnlySelfLover There is constant struggle between intellect and heart. And what is most disconcerting is that even some once hardened atheists have changed their minds and their arguments go out the window. Why does religion, which according to so many pundits for hundreds of years, should have died out by now, is still strong and emerging in different ways, such as with the Islamic faith. I am thinking more and more reason alone cannot solve it all and we still have a place in the pew.
jeff62rey 1 year ago
@jeff62rey it's just a cultural habit or tradition really, there aren't very many non-religious groups that handle funerals/weddings, that is changing slowly but surely and hopefully it'll catch on imo.
there is no god-force built into us per se, but we are programmed in a way to impart on non active agents an intelligence.
example: the wind blows the door open while you're in the kitchen and you yell '"who's there", the reason why we have this in our "natural programming" is easily explained
beebobox 1 year ago
@beebobox This is of course just my own experience and opinion which I wish in no way to impose on any, but that "god-force" has demonstrated a bit more than just "wind opening a door," in my life. I thought I was an avowed atheist, having studied all the classical arguments, etc, but these "spiritual" experiences whithin the Eastern Orthodox Church have men rethinking. I wouldn't say I am convinced, but now open. I guess you have not been in my shoes.
jeff62rey 1 year ago
@jeff62rey well long as you keep it vague and mysterious, i guess i can't argue with you :)
but if you find meaning in something like that, power to you buddy.
beebobox 1 year ago
@jeff62rey
I'm pretty late but it's desperation that brings us back to our basic thoughts.
Everyone always wants to blame someone for all bad things, that's hard if not impossible to deny.
So if you're extremely unlucky you will blame some supernatural power for your bad luck.

I really love this song, and I'm not even a Christian.
though I would like to find some lyrics of this track on the Internet.
but unfortunately I didn't succeed in finding some lyrics.
Icelandic is a quite magnificent language.
I am learning it, but it's difficult, I guess the tracks I have for myself in Icelandic are the only way in holding a clear perception of how it should be spoken.
but I thank Iceland for a great new year in 2010
