@phillyguy95 This flight came from Chicago, so it was getting close, and there is a nonstop from Charlotte, Atlanta and Newark. It's pretty competitive from Denver eastward all across the board price wise, so it should not be that much more.
Awesome Video! I am very excited! I have just booked a flight from SFO to HNL with UA on the 777. I am travelling from England, so its going to be one amazing journey.
Does this aircraft that operates the SFO to HNL route have the individual seat back TV systems? or is it main screen? thanks guys!
@scouseflyer It will be the 777's with the main screen only as these are domestic flights. They may be long, but still lower yielding. Have a great trip!
You can see the P&W logo on the side of that engine. United sure likes their P&W's, probably a legacy from when both companies were part of United Aircraft. United will have a problem if they buy the 787....P&W engines are not available for that plane.
@silintpengin Well, actually, these are 777-200A model, not ER (extended range). Chicago-Honolulu is close to their maximum range at 8.5 hours. These are domestic configured 777's with only first and economy, and the flight was filled to the brim. So I'd say it's the perfect aircraft for the flight. Not to mention cargo on this route is very heavy as well. This was in 2008 and 3 years later in 2011, the Chicago-Honolulu AND Chicago-Kahalui are both still 777 flights.
@silintpengin Federal aviation regulations require an aircraft to be ETOP( extended twin range operations) rated to fly over open water...The engine pictured is a GE-90 so it is configured for extended range flight.
Uh hunny, this is not a internationally configured 777. There is no business class section. The first class runs from rows 1-6 just behind doors 1A/B and forward of 2A/B. This is a domestic Chicago-Honoloulu route. Learn your shit before commenting with such a stupid remark.
@phoenox23 Go to seatguru.com and look up domestic 777 for United and get the fuck off my back. I know what I'm talking about. I fly all the fucking time ass!
@PhilG380 You would need to be from rows 16-19 to have that view and yet you say you're in rows 1-6. Sorry man but you're in the economy plus not first class. I do like your video, really I do. But I thing it's total bs that that's in first. the CRJ-700 which I've flown first class has window angles just like all other C.A.J.'s So I from personal experiance can say that you are not in first class. I've been in economy plus and economy calss almost every flight except the CRJ-700 so I can tell.
@PhilG380 Sorry but going off on me because I have an opinion and think that you are not in first class does not make me ignorant you SON OF A FUCKING BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EDUCATE YOUR SELF! and what crap I'm making a simple reasoning from the camera angle, experiance, seatguru, FS2004-FSX videos and experiance. you are making a big deal of nothing out of my posts big boy. @PhilG380 Want a cookie for flying everyday? the engine is proof of economy plus to me. But you could've been in the last seat in first......seat 6J, but that's doubtful. also the engine wouldn't las big like that from first class this is the end of my posts. all thurther comments can be directed to my inbox but I wont respond.
@PhilG380 I know that you are but what am I? I'm just stating that you would need to have a view that shows the wing root all the way to the end of the wingtip if you were in first class. you're not way forward of the wing you're several seats in front of the wing. Went to seatguru and I don't see first class were you say it is. There are more than just Boeing 777 as a 777 variant. was it a 200,200ER,200LR? Seeing as you haven't specified the variant I cannot take your word.
I went hawaii back in 2008, it is a beautiful place,I can't wait to come back, great weather, only wish we had the climate here in the uk. Your very lucky! England is still a lovely country though. Great video by the way.
@emusic234 Depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from NYC or north, then yes because you'll be over the Atlantic some, if you are coming from Dallas or Houston, then possibly as you will be over the Gulf some......over the state of Florida, there is a lot of water, but not an ocean. Just look at the geography and then figure it out.
I loved flying on that flight....i flew on that plane on November 22nd 2010 and i was in the very back in row like 48 or something....long flight but i enjoyed it!

Great Vid!! My wife and I flew on Flight 1 on May 23 of this year to go on our honeymoon! When we landed at HNL just by pure luck we taxied by one of Hawaiian's new Airbus A330s,which was undergoing route proving trials prior to entry to service!! That trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience!!
@PhilG380 You are correct. They use arm spoilers to slow down especially duration of descending. pretty much happen all time when I fly on SWA into SLC or LAS.
When spoilers are used for the purpose of slowing the aircraft down, they are referred to as speedbrakes. Ground spoilers are the term used when they open full to kill the wing's lift on landing, and flight spoilers are the term used when they are used to augment or otherwise completely provide roll control.
@usstaralliance i just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico. 2 Flight there and 2 Flights back. All four flights they used the spoilers in the approach to slow the plane down and descend quicker.
@usstaralliance Definitely sequencing/separation control by PHNL air traffic control. Phil is right, most aircraft are required to remain below 250kts below 10000ft but at this point in the video the plane is well below that and should have been below 250kts for some time.
@lyianx Semantics. The spoilers are in their "deployed" position. The fact that the spoilers in this case are being used to aid in a turn and not for destroying lift upon landing does not change that fact.
@lyianx And just glancing at the video again i am willing to bet the spoilers in this case are being used on BOTH wings for airspeed control. If this aircraft was banking it would use one set of spoilers and in this case the right wing. The right wing should be lower due to the reduced lift. This plane is more or less in level flight until a left bank to set up for final.
Im no airbus fan but your perception onit is sooo incredibly stupid i cant belive there are people like u out there !! "to many incidents" Are u for real ?that was the very 1st A 330 crash like WTF??? there were far more boeing crashes(dont get me wrong i fly boeing and love the planes) but i really pity u if u continue to view things the way u do ! Good look in life! And maby google so boeing crashes, there are loads (so i guess u wont be flying CO either)
Actually there have been 3 Airbus A330 crashes as of late. One of the prototypes(a P&W powered machine) was lost on a routine test flight after takeoff, killing the flight crew back in 1994. The crash was attributed to pilot error and a possible autopilot malfuction. Afriqiyah Airways lost Flt. 771 as it was landing at Tripoli in May of 2010.(that accident is still under investigation).
@rainbow1135 Ha well, I just arrived at Sydney from Los Angeles yesterday morning. Much more ocean to cross there! About 7,500 miles of it! But think of it, the water is a lot softer than the ground, no? I think it's the complete darkness of it all. Can't see anything other than the stars, and when you hit bumpy weather, sort of freaks you out.
@PhilG380 There in lies the problem. The water is actually not softer when dealing with force and even if you survive, now you are somewhere in the ocean where you will either get extremely lucky and found, drown, dehydrate and die a horrible death, go insane from the elements or be eaten by sharks or something like that..
@PhilG380 well yes the water is softer but if soemthing does happen and you have to crash land then if your going 200 even 300 miles an hour the impact is much like concrete.
@rainbow1135 Yeah I know how you feel ! I have millions of dollars in the bank but have never been off the mainland due to my fear of flying over water. I promised myself that I will finally go somewhere for my 32nd birthday in January. The movie Castaway did not help either !
@shamsky4evr i totally agree with what you said, however i wasn't talking about the instruments on the plane or anything like that, my point that i am trying to get across is this: If you are on a 777 and there is turbulence, its the weather not the plane, if an a330 is in the same situation its the weather not the plane, some people don't believe this and furthermore i am not saying airbus is better then 777, in fact 777 is my favorite plane. so i think we had a misunderstanding.(:::
@shamsky4evr The only airline in the US that flies Airbus over the Pacific is Delta. That said, Airbus planes have just as good of a safety record as Boeing. The incident involving the A330 from Brazil to Paris had to do with ice developing on the pitot tubes, which tell the aircraft how fast it is flying, and gave the aircraft the wrong indications. I flew a Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 and an A330-300 recently to and from Europe and felt perfectly fine.
Except that Continental and United are merging, and the brand Continental will no longer exist, and United flies Airbus narrow bodies and is ordering the A350 as a wide body aircraft. Then again, Continental has the 787 on order. Either way, you will end up flying United, and they fly Airbus. Quite a lot of them in fact.
@PhilG380 I agree with your response to charliegirl824 comment, if you are flying in a 777 for example, and you have a horrible flight and landing, it is not because of the plane but because of many different factors, such as turbulence, what the weather is like etc. the same could happen to an A330 as the 777 given the right conditions.
Thanks for posting this - it brings back a lot of happy memories. I worked for UA in the 1980's and 1990's and enjoyed taking flight # 1 (Chicago-Honolulu) many times. Back then it was via either a DC-10 or 747.
@BurninC4rtrage Seriously dude, you are 18 or so, do we REALLY want to rehash what went on a few replies back where you said that you DID NOT do any of those things?
The 777 and A330 BOTH ONLY have TWO airframes. There is the 777-200 and the 777-300. The A330, the A330-300 and the A330-200. The only difference in the physical size of the A330 variations and the 777 variations are the obvious length, raked wingtips on some 777's, and a difference in tail height that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Again, two versions for both, but various "sub-types." However, on ALL accounts, the 777 is, by area, a larger aircraft than any A330 version.
@charliegirl824 It really makes no difference which type of aircraft you flew as to how the flight was or how you landed. Smooth landings and smooth flights all depend on dynamics that have nothing to do with the aircraft, ie, winds, turbulence, ground conditions, runway conditions, etc. A 747 will land the same as a Cessna given the right conditions.
Not necessarily. We can generalize and say it makes for a _smoother_ landing - especially in contrast to a light aircraft ... but WX conditions are the great equalizer. A stiff wind of any sorts - and especially crosswinds and downdrafts - will make the smoothest ride otherwise into a wild rollercoaster that may be incredibly bumpy on touchdown - even for widebody aircraft.
About 5 days, just a quick trip to Honolulu. Stayed at the Halekulani and met up with a friend that plays for the Honolulu Symphony. Was a good time, lots of drinking!

@rainbow1135 Yeah I know how you feel ! I have millions of dollars in the bank but have never been off the mainland due to my fear of flying over water. I promised myself that I will finally go somewhere for my 32nd birthday in January. The movie Castaway did not help either !

@tierren oh yeah, i know the movie castaway, its a hard story! The Movie about Aloha Airlines Flight 243 is a true story happend 1988!!!

MrHotman54 1 year ago
@shamsky4evr The only airline in the US that flies Airbus over the Pacific is Delta. That said, Airbus planes have just as good of a safety record as Boeing. The incident involving the A330 from Brazil to Paris had to do with ice developing on the pitot tubes, which tell the aircraft how fast it is flying, and gave the aircraft the wrong indications. I flew a Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 and an A330-300 recently to and from Europe and felt perfectly fine.
PhilG380 1 year ago
@PhilG380 Incorrect, Hawaiian Airlines is operating a Airbus A330 from LAX Los Angeles to Honolulu
dylanhelmer 1 year ago
@shamsky4evr
PhilG380 1 year ago
@PhilG380 not completly true. united has many wide such as 767,777,747. i like both companies but in the end...IF IT AINT BOEING, I AINT GOING :)

Back then it was via either a DC-10 or 747.
etienne818 1 year ago
@etienne818 i remembet those day the DC-10 was one of my favorite aircrafts. Back then it was flight 43 i think and a favorite by NRSA's.

@BurninC4rtrage Seriously dude, you are 18 or so, do we REALLY want to rehash what went on a few replies back where you said that you DID NOT do any of those things?
PhilG380 2 years ago
@BurninC4rtrage There are not 3 airframes to the A330 nor are there 4 airframes to the 777. There are 2 variants of each, each with various subtypes.
But then again, who am I to say. You have flown your friends 777-300ER, and trained on the 737, and 747 was it? You probably know better than I.
PhilG380 2 years ago
@BurninC4rtrage
PhilG380 2 years ago
Is the 777 bigger than the A330?
charliegirl824 2 years ago
I have never flown on a 777 but i did fly an air france A330...It was a rough trip and landings were horrible
charliegirl824 2 years ago
@charliegirl824 It really makes no difference which type of aircraft you flew as to how the flight was or how you landed. Smooth landings and smooth flights all depend on dynamics that have nothing to do with the aircraft, ie, winds, turbulence, ground conditions, runway conditions, etc. A 747 will land the same as a Cessna given the right conditions.
PhilG380 2 years ago
Negative. Larger planes such as the 747 compress the air beneath them as they land making for a smoother landing
caramelo2424 2 years ago
Not necessarily. We can generalize and say it makes for a _smoother_ landing - especially in contrast to a light aircraft ... but WX conditions are the great equalizer. A stiff wind of any sorts - and especially crosswinds and downdrafts - will make the smoothest ride otherwise into a wild rollercoaster that may be incredibly bumpy on touchdown - even for widebody aircraft.

does the 777 not had the wing tips? i thought it was a standard on the newer boeing planes? someone please enlighten me :D

@ramboormark No, the 777-200/200ER/300 models do not have the raked wingtips. Only the -300ER and the -200LR.
