I had a whole bunch of cars and three tracks that I got on clearance for $25, plus the original one I got for Christmas. I also built custom track using tackboard. I had a BIG track for a while. It was fun. All my friends had cars and we would race after school. The fastest cars were the 4wd ones in 2wd with no driveshaft. Stock you could put three batteries in. I loved trying to make my car go faster.
I had 4 of these when I was a kid. No track though, so they tended to end up being chased by dogs along the pavement until they clipped something and flipped. I had 2 of the twin engine ones, and two of the 3 battery ones. Twin engine for every time.
Asia still seems to go for the Tamiya Mini 4WD racing though. Maybe they should try to export it.
Record Breakers had a lot of potential to teach kids about electricity and electric motors. I myself studied electronics and digital systems in college. Kids need toys that are more than just virtual reality. They need to learn how to build and engineer from a young age so as to stay competitive later on. Slot cars are alright I guess, but record breakers just had that charm of being able to build from the ground up, different motors, chassis, tires and hubs, turn guides, gears, what a cool toy!
In 1990, I won the dual engine drag race at a local mall where I lived. It was pretty cool. I showed up with only 3 cars in my parts case. I only had one pair of fresh batteries left and so I left it to the final event, the drag race. The trick was to use two turbo engines in a duel engine dragster. I won a trophy and a figure 8 race track. I wanted to get into it more, but they pulled record breakers from the market and so parts and spare chassis soon dried up and video games took over. Too bad
So awesome. This was my favorite toy and show for a while as a kid. I would wake up extra early before school to watch this show. I had the foam tires, the knobby ones.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I was feeling nostalgic and was hoping a clip from this would be on YouTube. I attended 3 of these races as a kid when they toured the country in shopping malls. I actually won third place overall in Virginia Beach, in the "grand prix" class, haha!
Great Video! I was hoping to see some clips from the show and I'm glad it finally made YouTube. I put a link in the Wikipedia article and it should be bringing in more hits soon. Do you have more of the show to post? I'd love to see the entire episode (in 2 or 3 parts) or even more eps if you or anyone else has copies. DiC made four 22 minute episodes. Surely those four episodes are out there just waiting to be transferred and uploaded...
I miss the 80's/90's

Jesse ventura could make anything sound important. As he does here for a toy racing show.

I used to have the twin-motor black Lambo. I don't remember what happened to it, but dammit watching this is making me miss it now.

Never heard of this before, but it looks badass. Wish it were around when I was 10 years old...
