All the good that has been said of Anette's singing is defensive *things you say about a karaoke singer when you don't want to hurt their feelings*. I love Nightwish, I love music, I can find something to love about everybody and everything. But Anette's vocals are one thing I really don't like that are truly bad. It's a shame, embarrassing to NW. She seems nice, I feel so bad for her and the flack she takes. She truly should not be in NW though.
She isn't terrible, but Anette is clearly singing a song written out of her range. Rabid Targa fans need to remember that she doesn't have the best track record of singing live songs either.
The one thing Anette does that I can't stand is when she adds in improvised talking in the middle of songs where it doesn't belong.. "I need your help now, I want everyone to put their hands in the air, everybody say hey hey" in the middle of an otherwise passable live version of Sahara.. No thanks Anette.

I can respect other peoples' opinions, just as long as they don't feel the need to be hurtful about the singer when they express them. I think Anette will be much more popular when Nightwish played more Oceanborn and Angels fall first during their DPP tour. The first songs have more folky and fast melodies wich fits better with Anette than with Tarja

It's been 4 frinkin' years since that tour and of course during 2009 she showed that she improved a lot considering that the song is written for Tarja and to add to this argument, I'll have to say that Anette sings a in full chest voice, which is even more difficult than Tarja's opera voice.
Anette may try to do belting but she fails. The result is her screaming and screeching horribly. Aside from that she is missing note after note with a big smile on her face. Than means that her ears are less than stellar.
There is no such thing as "opera voice". Tarja sings with classical technique which is an art needing lifelong dedication.
Even IF Anette's attempt of chest voice would be difficult, what matters are the results.
OOh..and I have a beef with NIGHWISH! Why dont you have ALL your recordings on here not just the new ones.. both define who you are and its fair to put up your history and be proud of all of your music. We are Nightwish fans...not "Tarja" fans. We love the Nightwish we fell in love with. We are alloud to have our opinions as others are. They are more "comercial" to me. They will sell more records but they lose their heart to me. I think the whole "fight" is retarded. Nightwish made their choice and we have our own opinions. Anette has an awesome voice that I wish I had and Tarja has the voice of a god ! But they are both awesome...and Marco... His voice is just plain awesome :D All of Nightwish is amazing ! Call me crazy but I really like how Anette sings this.
@Feanor2345 Anette is a trained singer, but in modern singing technique. She also learnt to sing since her childhood, trained in Danmark and wasn't only in several bands and a studio singer, but appeared in a musical as well.
Also, Tarja never finished any of her studies, and she was only in Karlsruhe for a year or so. She did not have official classical training before the studies at the Sibelius either, she sang in choirs but not solo.
Do some homework before you utter "expert" opinions.

In my humble opinion Anette's a great singer. Sure she doesn't has Tarja's godly voice, but hey the girl can sing Nemo without any flaws. You have to take in consideration that Nemo is written and composed for Tarja. So she did worked the song out her own way and it sounds awesome (once again, Tarja is one of kind).
@daks46 The only complaint I have is that (as someone who lives with 3 singers) the key is too high for her - that becomes obvious in the key change at the end. They could have done with dropping the key but then they'd have had to get the orchestra in and re-record it, which wasn't goin to happen lol
Sorry to get all musically technical on ya ;=) I also like NW with Anette - Wishmaster and Slayin the Dreamer are a bit 'meh' but I never like StD and WM was always a bit dodgy live imho
@barrry9 I agree that it's too high for her. Not that she 'sucks' singing it. More like, I fear the strain on her voice that it's doing to her. She needs help, training to reach higher notes so she doesn't blow her voice on the older songs. It's unfair to ask her to sing like Tarja.
@Celticswynd Its not that she can't hit the notes - she can. Its just that that key is not comfortable for her. Different people sing songs in different keys naturally, and no amount of training will change that (at least none that I've heard of haha) ;=)

Belting does not equal singing high with chest voice (as you read on wikipedia )
First and foremost it means to produce clean and loud musical notes in the upper voice register.
Her screeches cannot be called musical notes, let aside the loud and clean part.

A musical note has a very precise and fixed frequency, duration and other parameters.
If you analyze the exact same "note" from her live, she "sings" it different each time. any times she just skips a note or two.

The fact that Dessay started so late and became a virtuoso so fast, shows that she had a huge amount of talent.
The fact that Anette is a seasoned professional singer that reached 40 years of age and still cannot even sing properly shows she has no talent.
Anette would never get admitted to a decent music school
Dessay got admitted to conservatories as scholarship for winning a series of reputed contests.
That's the difference. Same as in Tarja's case.

Anette may try to do belting but she fails. The result is her screaming and screeching horribly. Aside from that she is missing note after note with a big smile on her face. Than means that her ears are less than stellar.
There is no such thing as "opera voice". Tarja sings with classical technique which is an art needing lifelong dedication.
Even IF Anette's attempt of chest voice would be difficult, what matters are the results.
The results are horrible.

We are Nightwish fans...not "Tarja" fans. We love the Nightwish we fell in love with. We are alloud to have our opinions as others are. They are more "comercial" to me. They will sell more records but they lose their heart to me. I think the whole "fight" is retarded. Nightwish made their choice and we have our own opinions. She doesnt singe this song in tone..but I probably wouldnt either with how nervous she was. But, they should write to suit her not use these cuz it doesnt work. :)

I think Anette tries her best to perform this song. Although it is written for Tarja, she sings it very well. You can't compare her with Tarja, because there is a big difference between their vocals...
Anette is making a good job and I like it. I also miss Tarja, like a lot of other fans, but Tarja is gone, and Anette is also a good singer!

I love Nightwish and Anette. I'm tired of people comparing Tarja and Anette. In fact..Tarja sings with her classical voice and Anette's style using her pop voice (popular) with i like best. Of course Anette's has a classical voice like everybody else..but her style is sing with a pop voice and belting out the songs. Love you Anette!!!

Tarja = classically trained singer (soprano) who has studied classical singing very long time (since she was 6 years old)
and studied Sibelius Academy in Finland and Karlsruhe'nin Music University in Germany.
Original singer in Nightwish, outstanding live singer. strong , trained voice.
Anette = No trained singer. before NW, sung by an unknown Swedish pop/rock (AA) amateur band.
Bad live singer, weak voice, can not sing NW old songs.

@Feanor2345 Anette is a trained singer, but in modern singing technique. She also learnt to sing since her childhood, trained in Danmark and wasn't only in several bands and a studio singer, but appeared in a musical as well.
Also, Tarja never finished any of her studies, and she was only in Karlsruhe for a year or so. She did not have official classical training before the studies at the Sibelius either, she sang in choirs but not solo.
Do some homework before you utter "expert" opinions.

In my humble opinion Anette's a great singer. Sure she doesn't has Tarja's godly voice, but hey the girl can sing Nemo without any flaws. You have to take in consideration that Nemo is written and composed for Tarja. So she did worked the song out her own way and it sounds awesome (once again, Tarja is one of kind).

@daks46 The only complaint I have is that (as someone who lives with 3 singers) the key is too high for her - that becomes obvious in the key change at the end. They could have done with dropping the key but then they'd have had to get the orchestra in and re-record it, which wasn't goin to happen lol
Sorry to get all musically technical on ya ;=) I also like NW with Anette - Wishmaster and Slayin the Dreamer are a bit 'meh' but I never like StD and WM was always a bit dodgy live imho
