Why do Iranians call themselves Persians?

Etymology of "Persian." The largest historical province of Iran was "Pars." (Pars + ian = Persian.) The Persian language was also originally called "Parsi." There is a city in the North of Iran called "Parsabad" = City of Persians. (After the introduction of Islam, the "P" was changed to an "F" because arabic (the language of the Koran) didn't have a "P" - i.e., "Parsi" became "Farsi" - "Pars" became "Fars.") Hope that helps.

The name Irane Zamin, Iran Shahr has always been what Iranians have called Iran. You are Persian only if you or your family was born in Parsa, other wise it is incorrect. Reza Shah was asked to have the name changed by the west by Hitler, he wanted to emulate all things of our past as our Aryan history. Reza Shah a great Iranian but uneducated spelled it incorrectly Iran instead of Arran. I can go on but not sure if it would make a difference for you.

Persia is the name of Parsa, the city where Cyrus & many Iranians are born. Parsa is also one of the main Iranian people that traveled & occupied this region. The reason Greeks called it Persia is due to the contact Greeks had with scouts of Cyrus, when asked where they are from the scouts said Parsa, that is how the nation got its name from Greeks
