  • pianist trying to learn classical guitar: the 2 things that i struggle with the most are my lack of calluses and my lack of bad posture. ouch

  • 44 people don't understand real music. That's OK,.

  • the Bream... the whole Bream... and nothing but the Bream

  • John Williams is the best composer nowadays... btw, i love the way he plays this song...

  • @DJBustOficial hilarious

  • @MelenaMonster agreed

  • @DJBustOficial The composer is a different John Williams than the classical guitarist

  • @DJBustOficial composer?

  • @felipeluisnovorocha The other John Williams being referred to is mostly a film composer and has written some of the greatest scores in the history of film if that answers your "?"

  • beautiful! thanks for posting!

  • Who cares how many people disliked this video? Just enjoy the wonderful music!

  • These 44 people were really fool!

  • the duo ultimate.

  • the intro reminds me of a kangol hammer breakin down an internal wall, so that we might listen to the warbling birds of the forest

  • @ColinDOYLE100 They only have 8 years difference, Bream was born in 1933 and Williams in 1941

  • How the hell can 44 people "dislike" this? I dispair for mankind.

  • Comment removed

  • Such incredible playing! Wonderful! Thank you to you both so much!

  • The 43 people who disliked this likes Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber. True story.

  • It sounds like at least Mr. Williams has tuned-down - is this just a matter of dropping the low "E" string down or is the whole instrument lowered by a whole step? (Or is the recording just way off?)

  • @johnofsurbiton I agree. Twice as many shifting squeaks and plucking sounds.

  • every time i listen to this it makes me cry

what a beautiful piece of music

  • Anyone know where I can get the score for this?

  • I remember years ago the B.B.C. put Bream and Williams on quite regularly on a late night slot........As a teenager I was into Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but even though I did not fully understand the intricacies and nuances of the music they played, I never missed an episode.

  • one of my favorite songs. so much feeling

  • Very well done! Beautiful.

  • Excellent like very much

  • any decent tab of this piece? ive been lonnking around.. but there are only cheap tabs of it.. ;any idea anyone?

  • @xorr177 Learn to read music

  • @xorr177 try here, you sould find it somewhere 3w . jamesedwardsguitar . com

  • Awesome.TY for posting this gem.

  • you're almost certainly going to poo=poo my contribution on YOUTUBE because my carer just slapped me and told me to just fucking pull myself together

  • This is the first time I find this two living legends of the guitar playing together. But I was surprised the most for the theme chosen by them. I really love it. I can´t spect less from two of the most brilliant pupils of Mr. Andres Segovia.

  • This is the first time I find this two living legends of the guitar playing together. But I was surprised the most for the theme chosen by them. I really love it. I can´t spect less from two of the most brilliant pupils of Mr. Andres Segovia.

  • i just got chills that lasted the entire song

  • While I've memorized all my solo rep for my own sake, I've used sheet music in duets, trios, quartets, and quintets just in case I lose my spot. And, it helps for remembering dynamics. You have to use predetermined dynamics so you and the others players are in sync. So before you get all high and mighty and start judging some of the greatest musicians of all time for using sheet music, get some experience yourself, and prove that you have the authority to make those judgments.

  • Reading some of the comments bashing musicians who use sheet music in the concerts really upsets me. You obviously have no experience performing in an ensemble. As a now junior year Music Performance- Guitar Major, I've played in multiple ensembles, gone to scores of professional concerts, and sat through dozens of master classes. What's one thing almost all of these students and professional players have in common? Sheet music- just in case.

  • i read somewhere "julian bream and john williams duo" so i say to myself. I must see that!! i get to youtube and find them doing one of my favorite piano pieces!!!!!

this video truly made my day!

  • Pure magic!!!!

  • I listen to accomplished musicians who can render superb compositions like this while you listen to an instrument.. Who's defending the spirit of classical music ? You tell me.

  • i can only find the tabs for this music that dont have the full song and the main part i want is missing, can anyone help me?

  • They make a great couple. You can almost say...they make beautiful music together!!!

  • 42 people were waiting for a breakdown.

  • did they put down their guitars and make passionate love after this performance.......I like to think they might've.....

  • someone else has almost certainly asked, so excuse me, but does Anyone know where the transcription is available?

  • 500 of these views are probably me

  • A GREAT rendition. Here's a link with some sheet music:

    Free scores dot com

It won't let me post the link, but go to Free Scores dot come and search for Debussy

  • A GREAT rendition. Here's a link with some sheet music:

    Free scores dot com

  • does anybody know anywhere i can get sheet music for this arrangement?

  • @DaivdTheMusician same here. i'd like to get my hands on the sheet music as well.

  • a song for our brave lads bombing the fuck out of Libyans everywhere! God speed .......

  • I think that this is a nice interpretation of a brilliant piece of work. However will never compare to the execution a piano offers with this particular piece, it just lacks that certain depth that a piano offers its listener. Nicely done.

  • awesome. i've known about this arrangement by these two guitarists for a while but I never knew they had recorded a video of it as well.

  • @juiceforjoe As a guitarist, I agree with you. I think that's sort of the charm of the guitar, the player has to do more with less. Besides, when was the last time some 8th grader was dying to get piano lessions to impress women? I'll give you the orchestra and I'll take the women.

  • @juiceforjoe

The proof you're dramatically wrong: ABqk9QiRAjg

    :)

  • Amazing...

Thank God for loved ones to hug when something as great as Clair de Lune happens.. every time :D

  • Why are we comparing guitars and pianos as if one of them is better? They are both qualitatively different and incredibly beautiful. What is the purpose in trying to prove one is better than the other? Such an argument accomplishes nothing. Just go and make music; 'tis the point of either instrument, no?

  • @The3lse well put.

  • @The3lse Piano is better.

  • umm, interesting argument...i play classical guitar..so naturally i would be on the side of the guitar, however i would love to have the skill to play piano, its such a deep beautiful unique sounding instrument and when played well i believe it impresses and captivates more than a guitar, but from acoustic to electric the guitar is the most versatile insturment , its range of different sounds are staggering, from segovia to chet atkins to johnny marr to steve vai ..isnt music great..

  • i absolutely LOVE the guitar! in my humble estimation, it is bar none the most versastile and expressive instrument of our times. look at all that has been accomplished with it: the lyrical beauty of Julian Bream, the soul of BB King, the intensity of Slayer, the textures of Jonah Sithole, the joy of the Beatles, the list just keeps going. there's literally NOTHING you can't do with it and no "right/wrong" way to play it. from Segovia to Johnny Thunders each has found their own voice!

  • I wish I could play this alone, i mean 1 guitar only.

  • @tomasemilio Try the guitar transcription by Klenynjans for solo guitar. Tricky but no sharps or flats in the key signature has instant appeal

  • @Pipixcan69 thanks bro, appreciate it.

  • so beautiful. i often forget this sound of the guitar.

  • John Williams and Julian Bream are just wonderful. @radekprdei you can't compare one to the other..they are both very different. It would be like comparing a harp with a trumpet.. each has its own. As far as the guitar having a bad reputation because what modern society has done or are you implying that rock and roll as ruined it? Are you nuts or trying to sound arrogant or intelligent? Again different genres...and I also believe that piano also comes in a "toy"version as well as used for rock.

  • Such wonderful talent. Truly truly beautiful rendition of a Debussy work of art.

  • 39 dislikes, shame on u. u dont know what real music is

  • I love Claude Debussy's works, about all that he done ! He suffered and died in 1918; he had two wives, and a daughter, from the second; who joined him sooner at age of 14; her name was Emma !

  • Bonjour à tous..;je chercher désespérément une interprétation du prélude bwv 999 par John Williams à la guitare...

Celui qui pourrait me la transmettre aura droit à me reconnaissance éternelle...

    MERCI d'avance...

  • I nearly had a heart attack when he started playing that guitar. I came here expecting a piano, but I can't say I'm disappointed! *swoon*

  • is that THE john williams?

  • @Murdulo He is John Williams the guitarist not the film composer.

  • I imagine it to be (for the picky purists of course) more "proper" to play this on piano but guitars can just do so much more... vibrato, pizzicato, changes of color, etc... plus when Julian Bream is playing.... well... amazing!

  • Does anyone know where I can find the scores to this duet ?

  • I am not familiar with guitars. Why is the one on the left's neck so wide?

  • @Lvin4Him Probably just preference. It's easier to hit chords with wider necks imo.

  • @Lvin4Him Actually they're both pretty wide necks. On a classical guitar the neck is usually much wider than on a folk (steel string) acoustic, or on an electric. It's mainly to facilitate the fingerstyle technique of classical guitar, but also (as primate said) a wider neck can make certain things easier for some players. Generally speaking, though, classical guitar necks are meant to be wider than those of other kinds of guitars.

  • Two of my favorite guitarists. Thank you for posting, it is a joy to watch.

  • so simple and so beautiful

  • JESUS CHRIST I ACTUALLY CRIED THAT WAS EXQUISITE!

  • MERAVIGLIOSO!!

  • Oh my god! I can see the holiness in the face of these men! this is amazing!

  • this is so beautiful, i think ill try to learn this before i die

  • you cant compare the paino to the guitar

i think the piano lacks a lot of things

    like sounding different

its always gonna sound the same

you also cant add much personal feeling with dive bombs and vibrato like you can on the guitar

ive never heard sex from the piano, but hendrix and many others do it on guitar

  • Some music can perfectly be transcripted from the piano to the guitar ( best example is Asturias, but Bach is really fine too) but this music was not done to be transcripted from the piano to the guitar. It was not written to be played vibrato but legato, which is not easy if not impossible to do on a guitar. Listen to Samsom François playing it on the piano and you will understand what I mean. The smoothness and softness this music needs cannot be reproduced on guitars.

  • @mbayssel This video proves otherwise.

  • @mbayssel You may be right, but back in the fifties there was a version by Laurindo Almeida (not samba but classic), unfortunately 'introuvable' nowadays, which showed an absolute precise & sutil interpretation, on two guitars, using separate tracks. I'd wish you'd ever hear it and your opinion would surely change. Best regards

  • I listen to metal, bands like lamb of god, iwrestledabearonce and cannibal corpse but I absolutely love this song as well. It's so beautiful :')

  • @U1timatron My dear, this is where metal came from. :)

  • still a very delightful duo - debussy at his best

  • Sooo perfect !

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I need to hear more of this John Williams' guitar performances. I have his Plays the Movies CD, where he plays Schindler's List by the composer John Williams (they are NOT the same person!) and other works. This is so pure, so lovely!

  • Never heard this on guitar, then again I've not heard it on flute or violin before either! Thank you so much for posting this! I need to discover more of this John Williams' guitar performances. I have his Plays the Movies CD, where he plays the composer John Williams (they are NOT the same person!) Schindler's List and other works. This is so pure, so lovely!

  • I'm 14, I usually listen to Hard Rock. This performance literally brought tears to my eyes, it was that beautiful =")

  • @iBerserked You should hear Jascha Heifetz and Victor Borge play it. Oddly, although he's a bit of a ham, Victor Borge's version of this song is pure genius.

These three variants of this song are the ultimate trifecta of Clair de Lune. We have a treat in them that may actually be sweeter than the melody that danced through deBussy's mind when he first conceived of it.

  • john plodding away there

  • This sounds like Presti and Lagoya's take. The audio is on youtube.

  • very nice... can i have the tab for this song?

  • w.o.w.

  • Extremely beautiful.I've literally only been listening to this for hours on end while I've been doing my research papers, assignments, things of the sort.Very beautiful;I haven't gotten tired of it,nor will I probably ever be.Funny - all my relatives on my dad's side practically took up guitar, even all my siblings.I happened to turn away from that tradition and took up violin.Regrets?A little, maybe.Especially after listening to this.

  • That was incredible.

  • Tres bien!!

  • @Sarahi79 i agreee competely

  • @ARR93 The primary source? I don't know. But google the quote.

  • If Debussy heard these two play this piece, I think he would consider composing something for 2 guitars. However, the many transcriptions of this piece all sound good to my ear - a hallmark of great music.

  • This is an epic tandem for classical guitar, playing one of the best by Debussy.

  • Would love to hear these two do "Varen" by Edvard Grieg.

  • The Bream Dream Team! Clean as a clear flowing stream . . .

  • elegiac . . pensive... wistful... pure ART!

  • @Argyll9846

    you mean the "soul"...

  • It is impossible for me to find greater sound than the sound of the classical guitar.Bream and Williams are like the Great Titans of Greek Mythology.Masters!!

  • @amnaki segovia was monster too but too bad there isnt good recordings of him.

I think he isnt so technical but he has huge emotion

  • @guitarismysword1 I absolutely agree with you.Andres Segovia is ,for me at least and for many others, the top of the tops, the king of the kings.I got all of his records and yes it's too bad there are not such good quality (you can hear the sizzling fries..)

But if someone deserves to be the true holdover of Segovia's music heritage, that is certainly Williams and Bream. That's of course only my opinion.

  • Nice! Thank you. (TS)

  • Que hermoso..............me pacifica mi alma y mi corazón, que mucha falta me hace........

  • The moon shines alone.

  • @radekprdel i have to say i strongly disagree, the guitar is one of the most lyrical instrument's. it can do so much more than a piano for instance it can play with vibrato a piano can not. you can play soltanto or ponticelli to effect the tone a piano cant. i am not saying the guitar is superior to the piano they are both beautiful instruments. the guitar just has a very bad reputation because of what modern society has done to the guitar and all the children that have made it into a "toy".

  • @nwick440

I've played the guitar (classical) for 30 years now. I have a degree from a major university as well, but after the years of seeing everyone trying to find what effects they can to get a sound that lasts more than a second out of it I am losing faith. I know you can do amazing tricks with the sound but it is so fleeting. And so percussive. An attack and then nothing.

  • @nwick440

I wish I had spent my years on a different instrument. It gives me pleasure, sure, to play quietly for myself, and relax, but listening to the instrument is no joy for me. No offence meant.

  • @radekprdel Well, I have to agree that I am not a fan of transcribing exceptionally lyrical music like this or songs with lots of harmonic flavors onto the classical guitar. It would seem not to do the music much justice. The impact of the classical guitar is not in its ability to shriek like a violin or blast like a horn. Its unique place is like an ethereal human voice. It is in the nuance that there is beauty, and that nuance is damn hard to get down, even after 100 years of practice.

  • @radekprdel As far as your choice of instrument to express yourself, that is all part of the grand tragedy. Musically the classical guitar is the equivalent of trying to paint with your feet. People do it and are dang good at it, but there do seem to be easier ways to express one's self. I spent a day or two at the organ and found that my Bach sounds way better than on the guitar with years of practice. I try to play music composed on the guitar and to compose my own, it is much less depressing.

  • @nwick440

you are absolutely right! i am very happy to see that there are thoughtful comments here too. i truely love the guitar.

  • @nwick440 Im sorry , but what do you mean a "toy"?

  • Comment removed

  • @nwick440 so very true about how the guitar is now mostly portrayed as a "toy", this piece is the epitemy of pure emotion in music, it is so real and moving, it touches you deeply where not many things can, i am speachless and cleansed after listening, it is awe-inspiring

  • @nwick440 children?, you call famous musicians that date back to the early 50's of whom created rock n roll from the blues, children?the modern day generation is nothing but a product of what was started decades ago.if anyone made it into a ''toy'' it would be the generations you and your father before you and possibly before him have prospered from.dont point fingers at this generation...because dont for get we are the product of our fathers just as you were of yours.

  • @nwick440 I'll always have a strong love for the Violin and Cello though. haha those, combined with Guitar, are beautiful together.

  • @nwick440 Piano can make a lot of thing, for a good pianist ;)

We don't always imagine the limit of the instrument.

In fact, the limit of instrument, are only the limit of the player.

But you have right, guitar are beautiful and hadn't a good reputation, it is sad.

  • @nwick440 Fucking power chords... hahah

  • @Mijicm your obviously not a musician yourself or you would never make an idiotic comment like that..

  • Snore.

  • Notes in front of a musician is the equal of lyrics in front of a reciter. I don't like it. They play it perfectly though. Like it.

  • @Mijicm Alright then.. I want to see you play a song on ANY instrument without any notes. Lets see how many notes to get correct compared to a person who has notes.

  • @Keira2694 I'd play every single note, and I stand by it still! It's a shame to have notes in front of you whilt performing in front of other people, especially musicians. Cheers. :-)

  • @Mijicm Pompous much? Seriously, have you ever seen a full orchestra perform without the sheet music in front of every single one of them? The idiocy of that statement just floors me. Congratulations.

  • @RollickingRiffs I have seen it.

  • @Mijicm Well, who's to say you're lying? I certainly wouldn't be able to prove it. I have to state though, flaming a pair of nearly unfathomably talented musicians for reading from sheet music is essentially the same as ragging on a construction crew for using blueprints as they build a house. I don't like it. You act like a jackass/idiot perfectly though. Like it.

  • @RollickingRiffs There is nothing more free-flowing to a piano player than sitting down on the bench, placing fingers on the keys and playing. No sheet music in front of the player which guides that next note, that simply came from the player’s heart. Unfortunately not enough of this free style form of playing takes place.

I wouldn't dare insult these two proud lions, rather, I was making a different point, one you couldn't fathom, the emotions involved you couldn't possibly comprehend.

  • @Mijicm Are you serious right now? That wasn't your point at all. You originally said something regarding how sad it is to see musicians perform a piece with the sheet music in front of them, especially in front of other musicians, or something asinine like that. Now you're trying to back that up by saying nothing is better than free-flowing music from the soul with nothing to tell the musician what the next note is. That's improvisation dude. Not at all the same thing.

  • bellisimo.. no hay otra palabra para describirlo

  • Superfeather to Lightwieght.......LIGHTWIEGHT!!!

  • anybody know the publisher and/or whoever did the arrangement that Williams and Bream are playing? MUST BUY!!!!

  • That was extraordinarily beautiful. Really enjoyed that performance.

  • es demasiado!!!!!!!!!

  • How could 38 individuals have clicked "dislike" against this video is beyond me...

  • @ap06476 You apparently have never hung out much with classical guitarists (smile)

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

  • I like this piece so much, and they're playing really nice, but I think it's much more magical on piano...

  • (This is irrelevant to how I feel about the musicians, their beautiful music and tiredless contribution)

I notice a very awkward moment at the end when they finish, Bream was so into it :)

  • For me, this is the song of the unknown. On the peaks and in the valleys of its waves, one feels tantalizingly close to the beautiful emptiness of the universe. The silence between phrases sounds as if Debussy is waiting for an answer from God. To me, it sounds like a wolf crying at the moon.

  • Amazing guitars... Amazing feelings when I hear them....

  • Chopin once said, "Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two"

  • @kingdave84

     yes

  • lovely performance

  • Oh how utterly lovely... For me this is hauntingly beautiful, and as it finished I have a wistful smile plays about my face... John Williams Maestro of the guitar and a sublime player... *sighs deeply and relax* Pure bliss... :0)x

  • Its sad , And beautiful.

  • Romantic period

    Impressionism

  • lovely

  • Did nt this composer write Lion Tameing? woops no thats Claude Bottom!,sorry just trying to lighten the mood!

  • AWESOME!

  • I prefer Rock, it's mutch more emotional.

  • @hiomioman I would say that this piece music has more emotion and drama than a lot of rock music I've heard. Just because it isn't loud doesn't mean it isn't emotional.

  • Could there be a more beautiful pairing? This makes one sad, happy and reflective.

    So lovely with guitar.

  • I play this piece on the piano and I have never heard it played so beautifully by another instrument. This is breathtaking.
