Lol i have a computer thats not so great, but for some reson when i shut windows 98 down there is no shutting down messages just strait off in about 0.5 seconds :D
Iam running a 3.06 P4 on Windows ME and when i first installed teh OS it shut down instally..Once you get a bunch of stuff on there..It wont shut down so fast anymore
@TheDman216 "Once you get a bunch of stuff on there..It wont shut down so fast anymore" nah! I've got a 7 year old winXP install that went from SP1 to SP2 and then to SP3 that's packed with stuff, the startup & shut down times haven't changed much only difference is in how much resources Mc(Bloat)Afee consumes also, I've stripped the system of useless "features" - System Restore - User Tracking - Recycle Bin - IE and User History etc.
@RichardFDisk yea with 98se i did the same except the restore, IE and recycle bin..i dont use it online but had to to update the IE 5 to 6 so i could get the updates.Pretty soon iam gonna grab a 775 motherboard so i can max it out using my 775 P4/3.8!!Quoting scotty from star trex "thats as fast as she can go captain!"
@RichardFDisk I would never!!I built it to play 110gb of all old legacy games with maxed settings and some newer games that will work with 98/me so that computer will never see anything but winME for as long as its posting. Iam getting new non-ecc ram for it this week to replace the oddball ecc ram sticks i have in it now.Ill have some vids soon..I made it to show winME after all the updates is as stable as any other os ive ever used and hasnt proved me wong yet.
I ran Windows 98 SE exclusively on my Celeron 1.4GHz 768MB PC133 SDRAM system up through 2006. I was so dissatisfied with the performance of Windows XP that I avoided it for as long as I possibly could until software compatibility became too rare for my needs.
I had good times with my Win98. I had it running from a RAM drive for a few years. And I had it configured so stably that it would last over a month before I would really have to reboot!
@RichardFDisk When I built a pc specifically to run doom 3 at the highest settings I got xp, I think that was like 2005/6 christmas time.
It ran, on the desktop, slightly (but not particularly) slower than the win ME p4 1.5ghz I won in a competition (and promptly upgraded to 2.8ghz and 98se)
Recently I bought a laptop, fairly high spec, with Windows 7 (which I changed to ultimate). It runs (on the desktop) at pretty much the same speed as the other 2.
@RichardFDisk holy shit dude why in the fuck would you want to use windows 3.1 for that long i can understand windows 95 because its so damn similar to any os on the market today i could use windows95 and be able to do the same things im doing on windows 7 but 3.1 is too ... uhh i guess you would say unsophisticated these days hell i brought my laptop at walmart with 3 gb of ram and 2.3 dual core processor and windows 7 for only 340 us dollars
@RichardFDisk the whole point of the task bar is so you can easily manage open windows without it you have to search through every window open that means in 3.1 its hard to multitask and produce more work program manager is a piece of crap with a actual desktop you can make files a folders and organize it so no need for program manager and file manager sucks your limited to the amount of letters so its easy to lose important files and folder thus causing minutes of time to even find the files
@zonemad96 every version of windows requires better hardware than is available when it's released win3.1 is bad on the 80286 & early 80386, but install on an 80486 100MHz socket7 system or on a Pentium Pro 166MHz socket8 system w/ 32MB -64MB RAM and it smokes I can outstrip with file manager, anyone using explorer, try and rename 1000 files in explorer without them all getting the same name followed by (1) (2) (3) no in explorer you have to rename individually & I don't use the desktop
@RichardFDisk so their, every example u gave has a much better alternative in the newer versions of windows think if windows comes out with a new os each few years theirs a reason and thats to make money but to make money their has to be a good reason to go buy the new version so over all their might not be a huge difference but each new ones they make they get better and easier to use you need to learn how to actually use a new computer
@RichardFDisk a few more things the newer windows take longer to boot up theirs a reason for that they have more to them dos would take like 2 seconds to boot up on a computer built for windows xp cause theirs not alot to it windows xp would have alot more things to load. what business do you have that would allow you to use a windows 3.1 computer still? i would rather use windows me than windows 3.1 even though me crashes 24/7 it can do a lot more than 3.1 useing paper would be better than 3.1
@zonemad96 I do audio, win3.1 can't burn a CD and there's no program to record or edit with nor can it be installed or use disks big enough for audio the invoicing program I have doesn't work on anything but win3.1 and that's why I still have win3.1 FAT32 was one of windows better ideas NTFS is only OK only for the boot disk C: not for my user files on data drives vista and win7 are trash when it comes to audio work and take a wild guess at how many updates there were for win3.1
@RichardFDisk the whole point of more ram is to do things like gaming and flash so i agree on the hardware but still windows 95 is better than 3.1 a lot better and theirs other invoicing software for other operating systems and the only thing that sucks with fat is your limited to the file size and when it comes to audio work i would go with a linux distro because theirs linux distros that are specifically made for audio but it would be better to buy a newer computer with a better sound card
win9x doesn't support multi-core processors it will only use one of the CPUs on the chip and would end up running slower than a single core system;
A system that supports 553, 667, or 800 MHz DDR2 RAM with a P4(Xeon) 3.2GHz would certainly fly with win9x, the trouble is to find the MB chipset drivers for win9x..
as far as I know, that just addresses the "large" memory issue, you may find drivers for some hardware like sound or video hard to get.
The machine shown here, has an integrated 10/100 ethernet port, but I could only find win2K-XP drivers for it and that after about 10 days of searching & e-mail communication with HP.
win98 is a 32-bit OS, the 32-bit limit is 4GB, win9x / WinME has a 2GB imposed limit
However, there is also a bug that needs to be addressed in the [VCache] section of the win.ini file when installing more than 512MB RAM, to prevent "Out of Memory" Error from occurring
the machine shown in this vid. is a Compaq P4 with 768MB RAM and all of it shows in the System Dialog
and when I changed it to 1GB DDR RAM; 1024MB all of it is shown in the System Dialog;
The system has a 1GB RAM limit in the BIOS not Win98,
I never stress tested the system, I just installed Win98 to verify that the system worked because I can install win98 on a fast system in about 1/4 the time of an XP install. plus all the testing etc. is much quicker under Win98
I still have 3 machines running Win3.10 & DOS 6.20, and they'll fire up any time I want to use them, (I still do my business invoicing & cheque printing from these machines)
two out of the three have HDDs over 15 years old, and one has three HDDs that are over 10 years old.
I run windows 98 at this moment . I installed it yesterday. 512 ram, AMD 2.6 ghz. It works great, I have all my drivers installed. I can use yahoo messenger 7.5, I can watch online movies, listen music etc.I dunno when I will uninstall win98 because untill now everything works great. Now I only need some programming tools for school and that's all. Anyway in the future maybe I will consider to update to the 'newer' and 'cooler' Win2000 :P :D but untill then I am very happy using my
@RSPowerguy haha stay away from vista go with xp or windows 7 vista is a ok operating system but next to windows mistake edition its Microsofts worst os
my compaq laptop has a 111GB hard drive, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz and 1 GB ram and designed for XP but runs Windows 2000 pro and its FAST and i mean FAST! It takes less than 30 seconds to boot up+log me on+load all the programs. I can even watch YouTube on it, luckily flash 10 and the latest drivers for it are for 2000 as well as XP. Might i add it has a wireless internet adapter and i have HIGHSPEED 8 mbps wireless Internet?! Yeah, thats the power of Windows 2000!
Well said. I myself find the power of Windows 98 SE when running programs which require high memory consumption such as the Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Garry's mod works find on Windows 98 SE, what else do I need. The computer is a tool, if it works perfectly there is no need to upgrade or even downgrade.
An installation of Windows 98 on such a fast computer will make for a fast running Windows 98.
In fact, so fast that the shutdown process could actually damage the installation unless you applied a patch that delayed the shutdown so the hard drive could finish up what it was doing before the computer shuts down.
The patch was originally available (it might still be) from the Windows Update website or from the Microsoft support site.
No Kidding, I tested Win2k SP4 on this machine also and opted to use XP SP2 Pro for the final install though
2k was a bit slower because it was choking on the lack of networking hardware(all the onboard stuff is disabled: Audio, Video, NIC,) XP loads up @ 20 or less processes including the ASUS AGP Video card drivers & the Creative E-MU pro Audio card
Actually the AC97 on board integrated works & I did manage to get the 98 drivers for it
but for what I'm using the machine for the win98 won't run the apps. I'm going to use
but I did keep the 98 install on the 60GB HDD
I can boot from it on a USB adapter as long as there aren't any FAT or FAT 32 partitions on the internal drives the BIOS assigns it C: and it boots to win98

RichardFDisk 8 months ago
@RWL2011
no patch
I use win98 as a test install to verify systems are functional
I can install win98 in less than 1/30 the time it takes to do a full install and configure of 2K / XP
install w98 = a couple of hours to full configuration
install win2K / XP = over 60 hours to full configuration (even on today's über fast systems)
with 1,000's of customizations and security settings to draw from it takes a good while to configure.

win2K is actually better at networking than XP it's way faster
but win2K doesn't like to be installed stand alone on a system without an NIC
it freaks and goes really slow
XP at least while it's being installed looks and if it sees no NIC
it just works as a stand alone system
I ran 2 XP setups without any NIC or networking components
but win2k seems to want an NIC even if it's not connected to anything.
RichardFDisk 1 year ago
@davejoshmom1
I tried win2K after the 98 install
but because I didn't have the NIC drivers at the time I disabled it in the BIOS
it was soooooo slow because there was no network
all the services that use the network would just hang and bog the system down
so I just popped the partition and installed XP -SP2 with the NIC disabled and it ran fine
RichardFDisk 1 year ago
Nothing new.
2ghz computers basically came with a fucked up version of 98 just spun out to cash in on the millenium craze.
Granted it ran just as fast on either 98se or me, I upgraded the OS from ME to 98se and the cpu to 2.8ghz.

appleimacuser 2 years ago
there's an app. for that! (haha)
here's the hint:
what's my name
32GB FAT32 partition size is a win95, win2K, XP... programmed limitation
the FAT32 theoretical limit is way higher
under win98se,& ME you can format and use a drive up to 137GB which is the 28bit LBA boundary
under 2k, XP etc. you can only format up to 32GB but can mount and use any sized FAT32 drive up to 2TB
I use a third party tool and have drives up to 1TB formatted as FAT32
craptube keeps eating my reply: WTF?
RichardFDisk 2 years ago
is that the P3?
very very few P3's support more than 512MB RAM,
it's a BIOS & MB limitation,
though some servers of the same generation can support way more,
ie. I have a SuperMicro Dual Socket P3 Server that I can put 4 x 1GB sticks of PC133 ECC SDRAM for a total of 4GB RAM.
it's got 1.5GB currently:
2 x 256MB & 2 x 512MB Sticks

theres 1 problem with your theory.
Windows 98 still used a monolithical kernel. its a 16-bit base with a 32-bit Operating Environment.
the limit is actually 512megs
nelizmastr 2 years ago
it's not a theory;
the machine shown in this vid. is a Compaq P4 with 768MB RAM and all of it shows in the System Dialog
and when I changed it to 1GB DDR RAM; 1024MB all of it is shown in the System Dialog;
The system has a 1GB RAM limit in the BIOS not Win98,
I never stress tested the system, I just installed Win98 to verify that the system worked because I can install win98 on a fast system in about 1/4 the time of an XP install. plus all the testing etc. is much quicker under Win98

i tried this on a pentium iv 3.0 ghz lol

oldskool;
you've come to the right place;
I still have 3 machines running Win3.10 & DOS 6.20, and they'll fire up any time I want to use them, (I still do my business invoicing & cheque printing from these machines)
two out of the three have HDDs over 15 years old, and one has three HDDs that are over 10 years old.

Lol finally someone who doesnt think old computers are just scrap metal :). XD

Anyway in the future maybe I will consider to update to the 'newer' and 'cooler' Win2000 :P :D but untill then I am very happy using my
Win98 :D

where were you for the past few years :P But i do agree win 98 is very good machine. Now I run vista.
RSPowerguy 2 years ago
vista (x_x) ouch!
now there's a step in the wrong direction;
vista has been banned from my house and business and where I do contract work also;
add to my previous count:
better make that 4 machines running win3.1
any one of them will start up anytime I reach over and press the power button;
I don't know where any of the current vista machines will be in 10-15 years.
and who knows maybe these win3.1 machines will still start up then ! ! !
RichardFDisk 2 years ago
@RSPowerguy haha stay away from vista go with xp or windows 7 vista is a ok operating system but next to windows mistake edition its Microsofts worst os

I don't get why this vid is what it is. That is just a fresh install. Of course it is fast but after awhile it will slow down.
My brother has the exact same computer running XP with a 60Gb HDD and I just installed a 160Gb into it.
Compaq Presario 6330CA P4 2GHz
512 Mb DDR
160Gb Maxtor HDD
60Gb SeaGate ST360020A HDD
I was searching on info on improving this system but your vid was all I found ..
kabo0m 2 years ago
I currently have the system up and running with XP SP2
if you want to improve it's performance;
start by adding another 512MB RAM so you have 1GB, DDR RAM is cheap now
yes, it's a fresh install of w98 I only did it to test the system when I got it, but I did remove the drive with 98 still installed.
They only get slower with use when connected to the internet,
I have 4 win3.1 machines that are still as fast as the day I built them and I've never had to reinstall,

I got windows 98 to run on my dual core watch my video

my compaq laptop has a 111GB hard drive, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz and 1 GB ram and designed for XP but runs Windows 2000 pro and its FAST and i mean FAST!

Why is this a comedy?
Darbster3000 3 years ago 2
because, I find it "funny" that it takes a machine four years newer to run an OS like it should run
"Instant everything"
Instant start up
Instant shut down
Instant program opening & closing
etc.
it's part of that great MicroSoft comedy
that makes you need to upgrade constantly just to run slow
and it only gets worse
to get the same results from XP you need a machine 9 years newer than the original OS release date

Well said. I find the power in the windows 98 operation system especially when playing memory consuming games such as The Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
MirageBistro 2 years ago
Well said. I myself find the power of Windows 98 SE when running programs which require high memory consumption such as the Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Garry's mod works find on Windows 98 SE, what else do I need. The computer is a tool, if it works perfectly there is no need to upgrade or even downgrade.

It's a good idea to put an old operating system on a tower with such a powerful processor. It means that you have a speedy computer
bordercollies10 3 years ago 8
yeah that is pretty logical everyone knows that...
myfatproductions 3 years ago
An installation of Windows 98 on such a fast computer will make for a fast running Windows 98.
In fact, so fast that the shutdown process could actually damage the installation unless you applied a patch that delayed the shutdown so the hard drive could finish up what it was doing before the computer shuts down.
The patch was originally available (it might still be) from the Windows Update website or from the Microsoft support site.

I guess it totally depends on how much junk is installed,
I just did this as a fresh install with the bare minimum needed to run,
so when I click shut down the HDD light blinks once and it's off and then the power goes off.
the machine has no "Connection" to anything so it can't check win update.
RichardFDisk 3 years ago
It shuts Down Like that even on Pentium 2 400 MHz - 192 MB Ram !!!!
If you don't beleive me, try it for yourself
BananamanTE 3 years ago
I've seen win98 on P1's & P2's & P3's and they can be noticeably slower;
it depends on the configuration;
I can make w95 or w98 almost that fast on a 486 100 overdrive just by having no hardware & very few device drivers
in my other vid win95 on a 486sx 25MHz it's a stripped out machine and it's really quick also
Cheers

No Kidding, I tested Win2k SP4 on this machine also and opted to use XP SP2 Pro for the final install though
2k was a bit slower because it was choking on the lack of networking hardware(all the onboard stuff is disabled: Audio, Video, NIC,) XP loads up @ 20 or less processes including the ASUS AGP Video card drivers & the Creative E-MU pro Audio card
there's no win98 drivers for the Audio.
Cheers

Dang that sux. I guess you could pop in an old Sound Blaster 16 card or something like that and see if that works out.
SonicTheJackrabbit 3 years ago 6
Actually the AC97 on board integrated works & I did manage to get the 98 drivers for it
but for what I'm using the machine for the win98 won't run the apps. I'm going to use
but I did keep the 98 install on the 60GB HDD
I can boot from it on a USB adapter as long as there aren't any FAT or FAT 32 partitions on the internal drives the BIOS assigns it C: and it boots to win98
Cheers
