I agree, to do this as punishment is stupid, but again, it will likely (almost definitely) have no negative effect on the dog so long as it's not repeated. It's not worth every one getting so upset. Dogs, pups especially, often get themselves in worse situations than this.

This is asinine, not to mention sick and wrong. The dog has no idea what it is being punished for because he isn't being shown where he made the mistake. It would've been better to just take him to where he made the transgression and then tell him "No" in a stern voice. He will get the picture, the dog isn't learning anything from this kind of punishment. Get some puppy training pads, and a book about English Bulldogs because you clearly don't know what you're doing to this dog.
