I heard the records of them being played by a group of musicians in the basement of a tiny hotel my mother ran in Amsterdam in the fifties. to me then it was weird stuff. (I was into Elvis Presley those days, I was 15) and I couldn't believe my ears.. ) they had these hugh speakers in their rooms they had brought in as trunks and also, all their records it seemed were with audience.. life performances. fascinating it was and it stuck with me till today....
Jerry Lee Lewis did a fantastic version during the famous Million Dollar Quartet-session. The most complete and best sounding version is on "The complete Million Dollar Quartet". But of course it wasn't a regular studio recording but a jam
I first saw these guys in person in 1959. Since then I've seen them perform in Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Detroit, Atlantic City, Vegas and points in between..I've listened to them since '53 and the group never dissapoints..
Hahaha. I just knew someone would ask that. I was all of 18 years old at the time and had just started college at NC State. It's a gorgeous day here in FL....on the top side of the grass too! It was, is, and will be a great life!
Great video of the original group. I saw the 2007 group this eveing and they were OUTSTANDING. The current flugelhorn player is the best of any of the Freshmen horn players.
I agree re Curtis Calderon. Best trumpet/fluegelhorn going today, too. If you get a chance to hear any of his OOP CDs, do so. He's got a Chet Baker tribute album, too. I heard the current group last week: Great!
Goose Bumps. Ifirst saw them in San Antonio about 1956 in concert along with June Christy and Nat Cole. The curtain came up with them singing "Steet of Dreams. What Id give to see that trio again.
These guys were a HUGE influence on the Beach Boys, and that's why I am looking for their videos. This song is awesome. Great harmony and music, obvious where the Beach Boys got inspiration from now that I listen.
This is FF Group No.1 with Hal Kratsch (sp?). Picture quality understandably poor but that ol' Freshmen sounds shines thru. My first live Freshmen experience was 1955 at the Cafe Charmont in Juarez, Mexico. Hal Kratsch was gone and Ken Errair was in. Actress Jane Withers was there to see husband Ken perform. They were unbelievably great. Ross Barbour chatted with our group between sets. I was hooked for life. Still am. Looking forward to their 60th Anniversary blowout next year. My-oh-my!
They just kept getting better and better, and today they are absolutely fantastic. Hmmm, couldn't help but notice that Flanigan couldn't take his eyes from the first girl on the right! The group today is even better, if that is possible; they sing well and are all very accomplished musicians . . . jenny
My Desire is for Four Freshmen to be Downbeat Magazines Hall of Fame winner for 2007. Vote online now for them. Then come back and listen to all the Four Freshmen videos. They are priceless!
Look!! The fathers of the Beach Boys!

1. The Hollies (´65) - simply the best, but not found on youtube!
2. Buddy Holly (´58)
3. Four Freshmen (´52)
all others heard so far, much too schmalzy...

The Frankie Laine version (1947??) is by far the best.

What a surprise, a recorded performance from '52! One of the best singing groups America ever produced!
