just a little comment, suturing the medicated gauze is not necessary.it can be secured in place with tight tapes. suturing infetced areas can add to infections.

@Coltrane1011 Just to add to what Paopin wrote, it is also to prevent the dust and debris from getting in the eyes causing further infection. The only surgeries I know where the eyes aren't taped closed is any type of eye surgery and conscious brain surgery like when removing a brain tumor but the patient needs to be awake but so numb they don't feel pain yet can talk & move fingers/toes to ensure surgeon gets all of tumor w/as little chance of leaving the patient unable to speak or move after.
