Some find it so easy to dismiss Dinah because of her gentle manner in interviewing guests. It was all a clever ruse. Than many of her interviews were puff pieces, when she wanted to, because of her sweetness, she could get things out of celebrities no one else could. When it comes to interviewing and managing her guests she was rather a genius at it.
i must have seen this interview when it first aired, and have remembered what David Bowie said about "love" and "being IN love" all these years. I'm very glad I was finally able to find it. I think he is an insightful and honest man.
They had to replace every chair in the studio occupied by a woman during this interview. What were they thinking putting bowie and winkler in the same room together? Where are the sex symbols to replace these? Why does my generation suck so much!? Lady Gaga is no Bowie! Charlie Sheen is no Fonz! Damn everything! Damn everything! Where is the fun!? Why do people look at me like a serial killer when I approach them on the street!? Where has the fun gone? It's been ten years since a real terrorist
Is he the thin white duke here? I always read that he was nasty and irritable during that persona? He seem so nice here... I've been trying to find any interview with him as the duke
Hilarious, I've seen this vid elsewhere unedited;; here, at :30, there's about 40 seconds missing where Winkler is pontificating. And they put the camera on Mr Bowie a few times and his eyes are darting right-center face forward. Pretty much saying 'there is no truth in what your saying!' And at 1:27 , Ms Shore stops interruption from the lackeys with a look and arm gesture. Brilliance shines.
David is so brilliant, and sincere, and humble. And fucking Fonzie keeps trying to keep up with him by spouting these "profound" statements... poor David, he has the patience of a saint
I miss those days when you would have a bunch of people on a talk show who were'nt doing the circuit, and just promoting thier projects, Im sure they were , but things were more freeform back then, The Dinah show was a really great talk show, and anything could happen, I doubt anyone was discussing what had to be talked about. back stage.
i met henry winkler on my holiday in america when i went to a beach side bar. it was clear he had been drinking but not to what extent he was intoxicated. anyway i approached him ready to ask for his autograph. nstead he threw his cocktail over me and pushed me down a small flight of stairs. at the time i was fout months pregnant. i lost the baby. i have subsiquintly started a support group for women that have sufferd at the hands of henry winkler.
Thats right the time I met him, he was onthe set of Lords of Flatbush...He saw me lookin on(I was 15 ) and pulled his switchblade on me..he nicked my ice cream cone...I creid
Yeah, Henry Winkler was mean to me too. I met him in London as he was coming out of a broadcasting studio. He had a paper cup of coffee on him. I stopped to ask him for his autograph and he threw the scolding hot coffee in my face. I fell down on the floor screaming (This is all true by the way) and he kicked me 17 times in the ribs and shouted, "Fuck you kid!"
@tinofpop90 Compared to my encounter with Henry Winkler, it sounds like you got off incredibly easily. He put me in the hospital for 9 days. :-( God I hate that evil man.
Henry Winkler was a jerk to me. He was backstage and I was trying to say hello to him. I told him how much my family and me loved his as the Fonz on "Happy Days." He mumbled something about doing more than just "Happy Days," etc. I always love when some actor resents being known for the role that made them. Jerk!
I really agree with David Bowie about love (I feel quite the same ), and also very much about art; it's okay if the audience does not really understand the message, as long as the feeling is shared, then everyone is somehow on the same wavelength. That is true!!! He looks really beautiful here too!
@alfonsodavinti - I really agree with David Bowie about love (I feel quite the same ),"
Me too, and very well stated by Bowie. Being "In Love" is the more selfish of the two, as it is more about YOU and how the other person makes YOU feel. though it can be intoxicating and does help to keep Hallmark in business.
This is 1977, the year of Iggy's first & second solo albums - The Idiot and Lust For Life. In 1975 Iggy Pop was in a detox/mental institution in LA, and had no band or record deal
You're right. Didn't remember what the Iggy Pop interview looked like and confused it with this one (just after I left the comment, as I recall). On this show Bowie sang a fantastic version of Five Years with his 'Soul' American band. The show with Iggy Pop had great performances too, Funtime and Sister Midnight, although the latter seems to have disappeared from YT. Thanks for the correction, cheers!
how random is it that fonz is in this clip (!) Bowie seemed like an entirely different person when he was The Thin White Duke. I know it was from all the drugs, but its unbelievable just how different he was.
i completely agree...it seems when he was ziggy, his approach was a little more aggressive.....? But, as he said in another interview, he adopts characters with time, and i guess those seep into real life, or he likes to play the role all the time to get in the state of mind.
ha! bowie does the same thing i do, when he is trying to explain something he moves his hands a lot! I love the thin white duke, but he scares me soo much! I am so glad he got over it, even though i wish it could last for ever! Because if you watch later bowie interviews about the duke, you can see how terrible it was for him, and i don't want bowie in any discomfort......

got some tremendous insight listening to Mr. Jones, here. he's quite profound, actually. and the entire gender-bending thing he used to do makes more sense, now. i mean, if he felt emotionally, intellectually repressed, the alter-ego trip must have been a way for him to
explore and express himself wholly... must have been liberating, but really scary.
yeah, i'd never realized before the difference between the two things and they are correct, in my opinion. but in a way, i think bowie believes in the difference between being in love and loving someone because of his obsessive personality.
That was great, hate that blasted piano though.

His face when Fozie's talking at 00:25, a few of you have mentioned it, is hilarious. He's like 'Why is this man talking? Is he talking to me?'
I understand fully about the love thing.

wtf was henry doing. Desperate for attention? interrupting all the time, saying stupid shit trying to look wise, intelligent or something. Rude

he looks like he's trying to impress bowie, but to no avail. look at bowie's face on :25 seconds. he's looking at him like "wtf?"

yeah it does..haha bowie is hot..i totally agreed with what he said about the difference between loving someone and being in love..amazing man
manarfd 3 years ago 2
yeah, i'd never realized before the difference between the two things and they are correct, in my opinion. but in a way, i think bowie believes in the difference between being in love and loving someone because of his obsessive personality.

Bowie's so off his face and can still have dignity and he can keep his conversation normal.
