  • That was great, hate that blasted piano though.

  • The 70's and 80's day time television had some really great music and guests

  • What date did this air?

  • Some find it so easy to dismiss Dinah because of her gentle manner in interviewing guests. It was all a clever ruse. Than many of her interviews were puff pieces, when she wanted to, because of her sweetness, she could get things out of celebrities no one else could. When it comes to interviewing and managing her guests she was rather a genius at it.

  • its a bit to odeep for a daytime chat show lol! but david is right about love and it looks like hes found it with iman- 20 years strong.

  • David and Fonzie in the same video.. my life is complete.

  • i must have seen this interview when it first aired, and have remembered what David Bowie said about "love" and "being IN love" all these years. I'm very glad I was finally able to find it. I think he is an insightful and honest man.

  • What the thin white duke decided to do is get out of LA and off coke and speed.

  • @linorf Looks & sounds to me like Nancy Walker, of Mary Tyler Moore fame.

  • They had to replace every chair in the studio occupied by a woman during this interview. What were they thinking putting bowie and winkler in the same room together? Where are the sex symbols to replace these? Why does my generation suck so much!? Lady Gaga is no Bowie! Charlie Sheen is no Fonz! Damn everything! Damn everything! Where is the fun!? Why do people look at me like a serial killer when I approach them on the street!? Where has the fun gone? It's been ten years since a real terrorist

  • david is hot..

  • I love this man, and everything he says <3

But the most shallow thing I get from this is: every time I see him I fall in love with his cheekbones :3

  • Did she say "Puerto Rican costume" at 0:31 -- or "custom"? If costume, what the hell is a Puerto Rican costume??

  • @pizzacrime

She said costume. In the clip before this one he said, after living in New York for a while, he was wearing lots of Puerto Rican clothing.

  • Puto david

  • 0:26 -- David is like: "I opened with a compliment, that should have been harmless, why is Henry gushing, where is he going with this?" :)

  • 0:26 LOL :D

  • The Thin White Duke squashes the Winklestein bug. Splat.

  • what's with editing out Henry WInkler?

  • Great to see both David and Henry together. Too bad they cut the Fonz...

  • It's so funny that they edited out Henry Winkler speaking. Except the parts where he says Bowie is awesome.

  • For someone who was coked out of his mind, he sure talks a lot of sense...

  • Fonzie is awesome

  • The Fonz :>D

  • who is the lady in red/purple headband woman?

  • hes full of cocaine

  • intresting but definitely not a strange point of view !

  • He is very modest. he has an excellent singing voice (backing to Satelite of Love is one example).

  • @vunderground1 Modest?

  • I think I am IN LOVE with him!! :O :D <33333333

  • He's having a rather nice recovery from that Plastic Soul stage. He's gained a bit of weight. Goodness he seemed beyond anorexic in 1974.

  • @gotbugplz He may have gained weight here but he's still on the anorexia edge. :(

  • thanks so much fo this!! wonderful and I loved Dinah!!

  • Is he the thin white duke here? I always read that he was nasty and irritable during that persona? He seem so nice here... I've been trying to find any interview with him as the duke

  • So weird to hear David Bowie talking about how much he likes Fonzie.

  • Hilarious, I've seen this vid elsewhere unedited;; here, at :30, there's about 40 seconds missing where Winkler is pontificating. And they put the camera on Mr Bowie a few times and his eyes are darting right-center face forward. Pretty much saying 'there is no truth in what your saying!' And at 1:27 , Ms Shore stops interruption from the lackeys with a look and arm gesture. Brilliance shines.

  • His theory of love is very rare

  • Incomparably beautiful - and what a mind.

  • David is so brilliant, and sincere, and humble. And fucking Fonzie keeps trying to keep up with him by spouting these "profound" statements... poor David, he has the patience of a saint

  • @SaintBurrito

    LOL bavita

  • David you are really one of a kind, I think I learn more from listening to him.

  • che bello è + figo di fonzi!! XD

  • @patbowie79 hai ragione!!

  • "concentration is of the essence"?? What a load of pretentious crap from Henry Winkler. Daivid, is, of course, AWESOME.

  • I miss those days when you would have a bunch of people on a talk show who were'nt doing the circuit, and just promoting thier projects, Im sure they were , but things were more freeform back then, The Dinah show was a really great talk show, and anything could happen, I doubt anyone was discussing what had to be talked about. back stage.

  • Bowie and Henry...Great!

  • i met henry winkler on my holiday in america when i went to a beach side bar. it was clear he had been drinking but not to what extent he was intoxicated. anyway i approached him ready to ask for his autograph. nstead he threw his cocktail over me and pushed me down a small flight of stairs. at the time i was fout months pregnant. i lost the baby. i have subsiquintly started a support group for women that have sufferd at the hands of henry winkler.

  • Thats right the time I met him, he was onthe set of Lords of Flatbush...He saw me lookin on(I was 15 ) and pulled his switchblade on me..he nicked my ice cream cone...I creid

  • Yeah, Henry Winkler was mean to me too. I met him in London as he was coming out of a broadcasting studio. He had a paper cup of coffee on him. I stopped to ask him for his autograph and he threw the scolding hot coffee in my face. I fell down on the floor screaming (This is all true by the way) and he kicked me 17 times in the ribs and shouted, "Fuck you kid!"

  • @tinofpop90 Compared to my encounter with Henry Winkler, it sounds like you got off incredibly easily. He put me in the hospital for 9 days. :-( God I hate that evil man.

  • LOVE YA DAVID.. HENRY IS A SNOOZE!!

  • once agaain i thought i was the firs too think that way.thatnks bowie for dashing my reality

  • Henry Winkler was a jerk to me. He was backstage and I was trying to say hello to him. I told him how much my family and me loved his as the Fonz on "Happy Days." He mumbled something about doing more than just "Happy Days," etc. I always love when some actor resents being known for the role that made them. Jerk!

  • I really agree with David Bowie about love (I feel quite the same ), and also very much about art; it's okay if the audience does not really understand the message, as long as the feeling is shared, then everyone is somehow on the same wavelength. That is true!!! He looks really beautiful here too!

  • @alfonsodavinti - I really agree with David Bowie about love (I feel quite the same ),"

Me too, and very well stated by Bowie. Being "In Love" is the more selfish of the two, as it is more about YOU and how the other person makes YOU feel. though it can be intoxicating and does help to keep Hallmark in business.

  • Sexy... that's all I have to say.

  • 2:25 two chemicals come together when theres fire..... LOL

  • i know thats the guy from Happy Days, but he goes over board i think; not talk show host material lol, in my opinion

  • David is amazing! He is just genuis. So sad sometimes about parts of his life though

  • HAHAHAHAHA 0:25 AT BOWIE'S FACE.

  • I was so disappointed when I heard the Fonze's real voice! LOL But he likes Bowie, so that's cool I guess! :)

  • He's amazing!

  • it's the accent. Freaking want to steal his looks, his voice, and his accent.

  • I'm really sorry but the bit at 2:20 really reminds me of the "I've learned something today" bit at the end of South Park :)

  • Bowie was and is an amazing talent.

  • David Bowie was so hot in that incarnation.

  • David you said it all!!

  • This is 1977, the year of Iggy's first & second solo albums - The Idiot and Lust For Life. In 1975 Iggy Pop was in a detox/mental institution in LA, and had no band or record deal

  • kidcalabria u r wrong

david was in dinah shores show in 1975 & in 1977

in 1977 he had blond hair and he was with iggy playing the keyboard

  • You're right. Didn't remember what the Iggy Pop interview looked like and confused it with this one (just after I left the comment, as I recall). On this show Bowie sang a fantastic version of Five Years with his 'Soul' American band. The show with Iggy Pop had great performances too, Funtime and Sister Midnight, although the latter seems to have disappeared from YT. Thanks for the correction, cheers!

  • He's so humble and classy. He overpowers anyone else on the stage with his honesty.

  • OH WINKLER

  • i don't like Fonzzie or who ever is that man, i t hink is soooo fake!

  • very deep

  • FONZIEEEEEEEEEEEEE ahahaha

  • how random is it that fonz is in this clip (!) This is like a david bowie interview where he, beautiful and intelligent as he is, is broadnening perspective on minds of millions; All while fucking fonz, who is a good' ol classic and what not , is actually a total door knob and keeps on inturrupting and fucking the flow.

  • gosh ... *____*

  • i dnt like "fonz" in this interview but tbh i dnt know him

  • The Thin White Duke and The Fonz on the Same stage? Who would have thought?

And yea, it's true. Bowie definitely overpowers Fonzy.

  • Bowie seemed like an entirely different person when he was The Thin White Duke. I know it was from all the drugs, but its unbelievable just how different he was.

  • i completely agree...it seems when he was ziggy, his approach was a little more aggressive.....? But, as he said in another interview, he adopts characters with time, and i guess those seep into real life, or he likes to play the role all the time to get in the state of mind.

  • ha! bowie does the same thing i do, when he is trying to explain something he moves his hands a lot! I love the thin white duke, but he scares me soo much! I am so glad he got over it, even though i wish it could last for ever! Because if you watch later bowie interviews about the duke, you can see how terrible it was for him, and i don't want bowie in any discomfort......

    I love bowie...

  • i love david bowie he is a rock god!

  • bowie is cooler than i thought and fonz was like trying to grab some of th applause that bowie had if u get wt i mean

  • Don't fuck with da Fonz.

  • They shouldn't keep cutting off the Fonz like that.

    Fonzy knows about shit too!

  • Can't believe how honest Bowie is being here. And I couldn't empathize more.

  • and u read her book!!!!!......lol

  • I think everybody comes off well in this conversation. It's a bit stilted because it cuts off Winker a few times, but everybody seemed earnest and candid. I also loved Bowie drinking coffee (or whatever) and smoking a cigarette throughout. Old school.

  • David Bowie colored my life.

  • what the hell is henry winkler on here?

is it just me or is he trying abit to hard to sound intellectual and keep up with the profound things bowie is saying?

    it's random and kinda hilarious!

  • henry winkler kept getting cut off- he seemed like he had some interesting thinks to say

  • Winkler's a smart, nice guy. He lives down the street from me.

  • "I'm a great fan of Fonzi." lolLOLlolLOL XD

Ya gotta love Bowie's charming ways !

  • Henry Wrinkler on the same level as David Bowie? Not!

  • ehhhhhhhhh

  • the dork boy in the red jacket should just put that j--e tail between its legs and leave the stage...I pondered the same subject when i shipped high school math class at 9:AM to stay home and watch Dinah...ahh the days of Station to Station ,Heroes concerts, all aftwer our 2,yes 2 concerts in ONE day here in Dave's fave city Diamond Dogs, the matinee and the 9:PM show...what a day...anyone out there seen David 2wice in one day?

    Dr. Jeff

  • Very true about 'love' and 'in love'. Very true indeed.

    Very intelligent man.

  • More than interesting. david on "love" was clear

  • The guy in the red jacket, should just; not talk.

    Lol.

  • Don't talk that way about Henry Winkler, he is on a level of amazing equal to David Bowie

  • wow david bowie is a true artist with a capitol A.

  • It's weird seeing the Fonz without his leather jacket.

  • is that Rosie from the Bounty commercials popping in about half way?!

  • You know that i think I got his point about being in love and he's true it is an obsession especially if they don't love you in return. Classic martian point of view...kisses from home

  • That's the best explanation of being in love vs. loving I've ever heard. God.

  • completely agree

  • FOOKIN PONCE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love the way the celebrity/artists spoke on talk shows then...they spoke about love, life and feelings on a real, vulnerable and honest level. Very special. And wow, Dinah was allowing natural conversation rather than riffing and selling products. And to have such a combination of people whom would probably never speak on such levels otherwise.

  • As much as I love Bowie, I have to say this is drivel. Thank God he's out of this phase and seems more together now -

  • Nah, it's not drivel, he's merely trying to connect with an audience that would normally never understand unless he tries to communicate that.

  • I don't think what he says is drivel. I think he has one single point to make and it's a valid point, but he's having a hard time explaining it to DS, who eventually gets it. But Nancy Walker got it immediately. And HW is in outer space.

  • what he says is completely true he has a wonderful way to see things and in the end even dinah doesn't get it.

  • but that's not true! he's completely right i understand him, and i have to say he's right, there's no other way to say it being in love is a terrible condition wherw you think you're happy but instead you're just loving someone you created and when you find it out the whole world collapses on you

  • bowie and henry....i love those two!

  • it's not Bowie cutting off Henry Winkler; the clip is edited to focus on Bowie. The parts of the video where Bowie's not talking are missing.

  • fuck off jack ass

  • Fonzie

  • I love listening to David talk! And I love it how he cut off Fonzi haha David is so hot.

  • The 70's were a great time for Cocaine use..Bowie and the Fonz talking philosophy. Wonderful..

  • Very sincere and illuminating revelation by Mr. Bowie on television. Most people wouldn't probably speak this way even if they could.

  • lmao

dude....just noticed - when Bowie's said his thing about love and Fonzie begins to say soemthing - 4:40 Bowie just cuts him off completely and goes into a completely diff subject.

    i love bowie

  • Whahaha, fucking true!! XD "it's the pure love form, allowing the other person ... "-I was always totally dazzled by the art forms of the 20th century" ... Hahaha.

  • Bowie was not cutting of the fonz: there is obviously a scene cut out right at that point.

  • fonzie's such a pretensious arsehole.

  • Fonzi has an I.Q of 360

  • yale school of drama

  • fuck he's smart.... BOWIE ROCKS!!!!

  • this is so horrible, i got chills....

  • the fonz is a clown. please stop talking!

  • all this thing about "being IN love has nothin to do with lovin somebody truly", he is SO right!! i think the same!

i love his laugh, it maks me happy :D

thank u for this vid, i love to know what he's thinkin and what happens in his head :)

  • poor Henry; intelligent guy, but he really should have waited to talk with Bowie offstage, it was David's interview.

thank you for posting the video, it's tremendous.

  • got some tremendous insight listening to Mr. Jones, here. he's quite profound, actually. and the entire gender-bending thing he used to do makes more sense, now. i mean, if he felt emotionally, intellectually repressed, the alter-ego trip must have been a way for him to

explore and express himself wholly... must have been liberating, but really scary.

  • i love david bowie he is a rock god!

  • Bowie was so far ahead of his time.

    Brillant!!

  • why does dinah play w/ her nose like that?

  • Ahaha, I love David's look at 00:26

  • I think I understand exactly what you're talking about.

  • His accent is the cutest thing ever. Along with his face!

    lol.

And his voice pulls it allll together. :]

  • I have to agree, henry, along with one of the women, kept on inturupting our dear bowie!

    lol..david is the hottest thing.

I love his accent, it's so cute!

    haha.

  • His face when Fozie's talking at 00:25, a few of you have mentioned it, is hilarious. He's like 'Why is this man talking? Is he talking to me?'

I understand fully about the love thing.

  • I love his expression at 0:25!!!

  • wow

  • wtf was henry doing. Desperate for attention? interrupting all the time, saying stupid shit trying to look wise, intelligent or something. Rude

  • he looks like he's trying to impress bowie, but to no avail. look at bowie's face on :25 seconds. he's looking at him like "wtf?"

  • yeah it does..haha bowie is hot..i totally agreed with what he said about the difference between loving someone and being in love..amazing man

  • yeah, i'd never realized before the difference between the two things and they are correct, in my opinion. but in a way, i think bowie believes in the difference between being in love and loving someone because of his obsessive personality.

  • hahaahh true

  • Barry Zuckercorn seems to be making David nervous.

  • Shut up, Henry!

  • It seems like Henry keeps trying to break in to the conversation.

  • Bowie's so off his face and can still have dignity and he can keep his conversation normal.

Hes a fucking legend Happy Birthday Mr Bowie

  • Look at his face at 0:29-0:30 LOL!

  • David is a true artist.

  • 0:29. lolol "The fuck is this douche bag talking about?"

  • Yeah, I looked the same. Ha ha! : D

  • fonzie was Cool back then...... David and Fonzie are cooooooooool together..

  • henry winkler was a real douche back then. jeez.

  • I agreed with everything Bowie said about love- what in the world was Fonzie saying????
