The secret for "Wide World Of Sports"' long-term success was simple: The wide range of events covered (or as Jim mcKay noted in the opening of each show, "The Constant Variety Of Sport").
"Wide World" changed both television and sports forever. Auto racing, figure-skating, track and field, and gymnastics, among others, became major TV attractions thanks to "Wide World".
@altfactor Correct. Jim McKay addressed this one time saying it was like the other networks just looked on Main Street and Wide World looked down the side streets. That would explain why you saw things like Evel Knievel, frog jumping, cliff diving etc. It was also a major mistake for ABC to cancel it. ESPN stinks.
@VIDEOTIMEMACHINE Thank you!!! ESPN wouldn't be here today if it hadn't been for Wide World of Sports. That was the one that started it all. ABC WIde World of Sports & Greatest Sports Legends are better than any of the crap that's on about sports today.
This theme is from Score Productions an american music production company specializing in background music and themes for television programs. It was started in 1963 by music producer Robert A.Israel.Some well known production music composers who worked for Score were Charles Fox and Ed Kalenhoff.
I've always loved how well the piano tinkling blended so beautifully with the long flight of the ski jumper, the surfer gliding over the wave and the cliff diver (all in succession, from approx. 0:37-0:43), ending almost on cue with the diver the moment he hits the water and the sudden strumming of the harp. GREAT editing.
Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! One of the best promos I've ever seen. If I only knew the names of the theme and the artist. VIDEOTIMEMACHINE, you're the greatest!
Notice the Barrel Jumping! I used to love that competition. Those were the days when athletes were not afraid to scrape their knees or fractured their skulls.
This reminds me of Sunday afternoons in my house when I was a kid. My dad and brothers would watch boxing, and I liked gymnastics and Evel Knievel! And ABC had the coolest promos! I miss those days!
I like both versions of this promo. But it brought a smile to my face seeing the longer take. Bless you, videotimemachine for posting this wonderful piece of TV history!
This is my favorite intro!!

Anyone know the name of the music on this promo?

This was by far the best promo ever. Watching this Promo with the great music says that if you miss an Ep. Then you miss a LOT!!!!!>
Those were the good days of TV. We had only 3 to 4 stations to watch. But this was good quality. NOW WITH 100S OF STATIONS TO WATCH. NOTHING ON.

I love this theme!! It sounds like it was written by Issac Hayes or the Love Unlimited Orchestra!!
Contrast this great theme to the lame, anonymous sounding music played by ESPN (who took over ABC Sports).

Probably the best sports promo ever made. ABC showed it for something like 20 years after they made it.

This does nothing for me, nor does the later 1974 version. Trying to find the one they used in between, but can't.
