I was lucky enough to bookmark this as a favourite on my youtube back when this entire interview was public. Now this is the only video I can watch, where's the links to the other videos? This is a very interesting and important interview to me. Thanks.
Out of all the famous people who died recently, I don't care about them personally because I didn't know any of them, including Carlin. But he is the only one whose work I will truly miss. No more specials, no more books, no more having my brain kicked into thought in his way really feels like the world's loss. We had so little.
I am really impressed with the completeness of this interview. While it's not perfect (the technical glitches were ridiculous), it was super to watch. Thanks for making it, and thanks for everything, George!
My gosh, I didn't think I could cry at the end, but I 'jolly well' did. So sad that we don't get to enjoy his presence anymore, and what a great life.
@CtrlCCtrlVx3 Don't know about Stanhope, I wouldn't put him on par with Carlin and Hicks maybe 8 or 9 strokes behind them. Don't get me wrong he is funny.
I would recommend:
Bill Maher, He's pretty good, a bit more political then Carlin and Hicks but just as funny IMO anyways.
Jim Jefferies he is hilarious, Not as philosophical. He's has an HBO special, "I Swear to God." He's got a great bit on religion.
i never knew he existed till i heard his quote on michael jackson only a few weeks ago....now im hooked i thought i was going nuts then i heard his stuff and now i feel sane again...thanks george you old fuck
Damn I miss George! I can't help but think that he would've actually been one of the few (if not only) "mainstream" people who would support The Zeitgeist Movement and The Venus Project.
I have thought the EXACT same thing! George Carlin was a master at revealing the bullshit and you can tell all that was a result of his desire for a better world. He advocated that in his way, not by saying we need a better world, but by showing all the made up crap that our current world is made of...and how retarded it is.
RIP Mr. Carlin, you're works shall live on forever!
no, its the opposite,..he stopped caring and called it bullshit because he had no hope in anyone. thats what he says in the interview, unless you disagree with carlin's own opinion ;)
Good interview, I watched the whole thing to hear him talk about the country more and his beliefs. Shame it wasn't expanded to something I havent already seen in his shows.
Thank God for such an in-depth interview (in this case I'll capitalize) so soon before his death. Normally I'd ask why this series wasn't edited but it was actually great to see some of the little moments like when George promised there was a "clean spot" in his kleenex. This man was such a great storyteller (not only writer and free-thinker) that it actually gives me the chills sometimes.
@crydercryder: Not getting that part might mean that you were probably in the room at the time.
hey guys i couldnt understand what he said about the 2nd idea of what his epitaph would be.. could you interpret it for me please? haha, i really dont know how i missed it
An authentic comprehensive personal philosophy. It is what George had. I wonder if seeing him live in 1969 contributed to my own position on all in life. 40+ years went by and my views are strikingly similar to his on many controversial subjects.
I wish he was still with us and all of the bankers, politicians, corporate scum, wall street lackeys, religious extremists, military predators, and Owners of this world were dead in his stead.
And from Gods lips to your ears. Or at very least an Angle. But nothing and no one lives forever, not even a God like Carlin. We were blessed though for his time with us. The funny thing is I am an atheist like he was, but he makes me believe in super humans by his words. But then again, I believe, as Bob Marley sings, "A mighty God is a living man". No truer words can describe the almighty Carlin. Time to rest now, job well done. He is/was my idol and always will be.
I had the privilege to see George live in 1997, I was only 13 years old and defiantly the youngest person there. My parents took me because they knew what a master George was, I'll always be grateful for that....We'll always miss you George.
@ryder536 you're a lucky sob, ya know? Jeez, my folks didn't know what to think of the man, and I'm about you're age... hell, probably older. Give your folks a hug and tell them how much it meant to you, if you haven't already:)
Thank you. George was a man to be admired, he was someone you would want to learn from, he was truly a great human being, someone to love and cherish. I'll miss you George. But I know you'll be making them laugh and cry wherever you are pal. I love you.
George Carlin has been there my entire life. I grew up watching him and listening to him because my parents were hip enough to allow a young boy to listen to a comic master. I owe a debt of gratitude to George Carlin for letting me know that it's sublime to have great perception - even though some will be very jealous. I was never jealous of George, I was only inspired. I'm going to go watch "It's Bad For Ya" now and delight in watching a true genius at his craft.
The one guy in history who actually deserves a film based on his life and would probably never want one. I feel like i never learned anything real before I heard his voice, thank you for the knowledge Mr. Carlin.
George was to modern comedy what Chuck Berry was to rock n roll. He defined the rhythms and set the boundaries that everyone who came after him had to either follow, or at least acknowledge in some form. And best of all, he spoke the Truth as he saw it, in a time/place where that is not always a welcome thing.
Damn right too hip for the room. Wherever he goes, over half a century of comic chops go with him, and how many people could hold a candle to this guy?
none, no one will ever hold a candle to carlin. he's the fucking michael jordan of comedy, and sorry to offend anyone, but richard pryor pales in comparison with this guy.

how would they know the date of his death (2008) when this video was posted in 2007? i guess they re-posted it recently with that additional message at the end. whatever, that's not important. George is my favorite comedian of all time.
I think that censorship, vaccines, and cloning are not what mother nature will ever approuve, that stuff is man made and it has no chance of surviving at a long run. Georges stuff is eternal. Thank You.
i stumbled across carlin about three months before his death (give or take). my finding of him was a total accident, one day i was bored on youtube and typed "funny shit" into youtube, his infamous "religion is bullshit" segment came up, i watched it, and the rest is history, george carlin is my favourite comedian and i think of him more as a philosipher to me on top of anything else, because he has taught me to question and analyze everything i see and never take no for an answer, thankyou
@LuvLennonMcCartney Try Bill Hicks out ,too, if you haven't heard of him. He's the only other true comic I can think of that is right in-line with the philosophical aspect of Carlin's work. They're both my favorite comedians of all time; they're on another level in comparison to other comedians.
I almost never comment on videos, but for this serie I will make an exception. George, it's a damned shame that you are passed away, I'd give any of my fingers to some higher energy if I could sit down with you and have a beer and talk. You have, like only a few else, the gift of expressing my thoughts regarding this world. Ha det gött, Tobbe.
Incredible interview. Thank you for posting, I had a great time watching George recount his life's best memories. I was never a big fan up until a little while ago, but he is sorely missed by myself and so many other, a legend in his own right.
This three hour interview was completely worth the time. I learned many insightful things from just listening to him recount his life. I learned a lot I didn't know about him himself, but certain other things really caught my attention, such as jester/philosopher/poet image...things about dreams coming true...God, he was a great man. A person recounting comedy in the last third of the century could not exclude his influence and attributions to it, nor a person recounting our culture as a whole.
I think "too hip for the room" is used when someone is making jokes but isn't getting laughs. It's like he was saying about "blame it on the audience." It's not him or the jokes that are at fault, is that the room isn't hip enough to get it.
Am I the only one who is wondering what might be found saved on his computer? There is probably at least 8 hours of material there, that we'll never get to hear..
I was wondering about this. I think (I could be wrong here, rumours are rumours) that books might be released with his notes. That would be awesome if it were true. I'm going to have a look for his older books.
His daughter Kelly is planning to publish a new George book of completely never before released material sometime before Christmas so there's something to look forward to man.
in other words, his estate as inheritence wasn't enough for those beneficiaries he left behind, so they have to scrounge through the old man's effects in order to generate more capital to feed their greed.
I was sixteen when Am-Fm came out. My nineteen year old son is a fan too. George Carlin gives us something in common. Where is he ? He was just here a minute ago.
This is gold. Thank you very much for posting this whole material unedited. For a huge fan of Carlin like me it means a lot. And remember... "Planet is fine. PEOPLE ARE FUCKED" :-P Peace.
jammin in new york is what got me into george carlin. i've watched it probably 20 or 30 times and it never gets old. i know the whole routine. every time my wife and i get on a plane together we go through the whole "safety lecture". he's one of the few guys that you can really point to and say, he made life happier for millions of people. how many religious fuckers can you say that about? very few.
If there's any one 'entertainer' whom I can say I identify with, understand, and feel inspired by, it is George Carlin.
My first exposure to George Carlin was the show he called his graduation - 1992's 'Jammin' in New York'. My Dad had a friend at work who recorded the show off HBO. I was 12, and I watched with my Dad - who was working 3rd shift, and I didn't see often - at ~3am on a Schoolnight.
My mother's boyfriend had 'Class Clown' & 'Occupation:Foole',prolly mid-late 70's,cuz I was still in elementary school.
I sure am glad I got to see him a couple years ago at Vancouver,BC,Canada's 'Center for the Performing Arts'-my hometown-,when he did "Modern Man'-yeah,baby.
its sad that earlier he was talking about how he had all of these ideas he wanted to spread and talk about and he only had 6 months left in his life to spread them after this interview...who knows the things that he took the the grave with him.../sigh
Wow I am simply speechless after watching the whole interview. Hearing George tell it in his own words was the only way this could have been done because no one else I have ever met does as good of a job of expressing the thoughts going inside of their head.
Brilliant interview for a brilliant man. When he died, the IQ of the America slipped a few more spots.
Simple ? This guy is deep. He was just very good at not showing it, because of his simple way of presenting his ideas. Nonetheless a great man. There is a need for more men like him, especially here in Germany . But in the USA he had a "seat in the front row", so it probably was the best way and I have to keep watching comedians on youtube xD I'm not sure if I'm sitting at Carlin's side or in the third row :D
5 GREATs! One for the Man, the perspective of the man, the comedic sense of the man, the memory of the man and the breadth of the interview. George wherever you are we know your doing your part - you certainly held up your end of the bargain as a fellow human being. Your legacy will motivate others.
i have watched this whole interview and have just read all of the postings by all the viewers. i don't think any of you really get or understand george. i was already thinking and feeling his thoughts before it was said but he elaborated and expanded brilliantly. also i already heard through his performances and interviews most of this interviews info but also learned alot. fuck religion. but if religious george is my god. i cried 5/23/08 4am when my mom called me when death went public.
I really didn't know there were others like me...i mean i grew up in a almost third world country behind a wall. the people here could compete with muslims for religulous fanaticism.I was an outcast for all my life and felt alone until George came.Nice to see there are ppl who love him as much as i do
Wow, I didn't even realize how much time went by after I got done with all of these. Thanks for posting all of the videos. Probably the most indepth interview by any comedian I have ever heard, and just a few years before he dies. Such a loss, and someone who will truly be missed. He was only here a second ago...:(
I agree, this was probably one of the best interviews I've ever seen. George was a great man. I remember listening to his records with my dad back in the early 80's and I've been an admirer of him ever since.
Oh and just one note. This was recorded only 6 months before he died. His death was such a shock to me. I figured he be kicking for at least another 10 years. I will miss him more than many of the people that died that I have known personally.
Thanks for doing this! You have allowed me to have the conversation with George that I never got the chance to have while he was alive. I worked in radio for 25 years and my career was largely inspired by Gorge's way with language. I literally learned to speak effectively by listening to George. He was a truly unique human being. :) JC
I feel as Carlin says he does that I have no faith in humanity. But Im not as sure as he is to give up all hope completely and remove myself from the equation...which is the clearly the only path once one does give up. Is it really too late to save humanity? Probably...Is it worth the try or should one focus the attention on enjoying it while it lasts? I'm not wise enough yet to know for sure--but georgey seemed so certain. If only we had just a while longer, Mr Carlin. You will be sorely missed
Just finished watching the entire interview. Man, I love George. Thanks to HBO he succeeded in honing his craft and becoming not only an icon, but a voice and a teacher of generations. This is probably the best interview i've seen, mainly because it's like a private Carlin lesson. So much of what I wanted to know about the man is in here.
Thanks for everything George. You will be remembered.
Well, I did not think I would be here 3 hours later listening to George Talk, but I am a better person for having heard what he had to say. An inspirational story about the life of a wise man. Thank You for the Post (s)... worth the time
what the fuckin fuck why did they delete this video. i watch six parts, almost three hours of this awesome guy speaking, impacting me, and i can't fuckin watch the last part? censorship. fuck i'm so pissed god fuckin damn it
I always believed comedians as being the philosophers of our modern day and George Carlin was definitely a man who exemplified that.
I never felt sad when he passed away because I knew he accomplished so much. If everyone could accomplish a quarter of what this man did then we'd all be in a better world.
That was great !! What makes You Tube a good thing. I made it threw 1 - 7 and I have a life, he, he, I love this man , great interview !! Thanks for posting this for all to see. R.I.P. George ,
I have to echo the setiments of so many here about the impact he had on my life. I too cried when he died (I will never say he 'passed away'). The world got a lot less funny and a lot less intelligent when he left us. Thank you so much for posting this interview.
You are Correct he did not pass away He fucking died....to say he passed away is soft launguage and he wouldn't have it that way....I also grieved at his death I was hoping for many more years of his comedy and insightfulness
He didn't die, he expired, like a magazine subscription xD I'm still sad he's gone, but least I can quote him to people who don't know him and introduce him to them, my way of thanking him for the years of laughter :)
Great interview, just blasted through the whole thing. I am a big fan of his shows and knew he was a smart guy but this totally change my view of him, one of a kind, I'm going to hunt down his books. I would say RIP but I'd be happy to welcome a zombie Carlin back.
The best thing i have to say about george carlin is that he was a man; one of a kind of a man, with ideas that we still are gonna be thinking for a long time. I wish he lived for a 1000 years because he was just getting warm, like pablo casals.
I was surprised to see that I wasn't the only one who actually felt sorrow for the death of a man who I never really knew, it made me realize just how great he was that he managed to do that.
He deserves to be more than just a footnote or a mention in some book about american comedy, he needs to be acknowledged for his true value as one of the greatest human beings to have walked the earth.
It really does feel as though he "was just here a minute ago"...
it was so great to listen to him talking about his life, a little more personal performance,so to say. thank you for the interview upload. he is amazing, great example to show that anything can be achieved if the goal is set right and havin no doubts about the possibility of it happenin. 3h of entertainment just now! damn, i onder how much more cool stuff he would come up with by now :)) <3
Never felt sorry for anyone who I knew and passed away... I never knew Carlin but I felt heartbroken when he died... hope he's having a blast wherever he is.
I loved George Carlin, the old fuck. And George Carlin, the young fuck. When he died, I actually cried. As LEV1ATHYN says, I've never been so upset when someone I'd never met died. I hope to continue his legacy, and even let my children watch his comedy, and intelligence. His advice that has best served me: QUESTION EVERYTHING! Let's question everything for him. Few humans have made such an impression on me.
Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. Aside from the fact that he's the funniest man to ever live, this was easily one of the most comprehensive and interesting interviews I've seen in a very long time.
George Carlin is, was and forever will be sorely missed by all in comedy.
My take on 'Too hip for the room'? Same as a phrase the same as the phrase 'He's too cool for school.' Carlin was too hip for the rest of the human race.
Indeed. All of us who knew his work will forever live richer lives. Before George kicked it I had never had the experience of "missing" someone I'd never even met.
After watching the whole interview i learned a lil more about the great man that carlin was and what he stood for not just for me but for open minded individuals in this country. He seems to have had a lucky rabbits foot with him on the start but his luck seems to have run out and his talent spoke for him in the end. He was a great man and he'll be forever missed by people like me who looked up to him to put everything in perspective.
i hadn't fully realized how much his books meant to george carlin. i'll have to buy a couple to check them out, coz i admire him greatly, but i'm mostly aware of his stand-up work.
Part 7, but no part 1 2 3 4 5 and 6? :(
Anywhere for a FULL interview? The website they posted doesn't have it.

A truly great man and a truly great inspiration, a beacon of hope in an otherwise dim, thoughtless and illogical world.
To the people who know there's something fucked up and feel alone he has given an identity and the confirmation that they're not the only ones.
We should strive to challenge the norm and rise to the occasion the way he has. He may be dead but his thoughts and influence are immortal.
This man has done far more good than Jesus ever did, and should be remembered accordingly.

i stumbled across carlin about three months before his death (give or take). my finding of him was a total accident, one day i was bored on youtube and typed "funny shit" into youtube, his infamous "religion is bullshit" segment came up, i watched it, and the rest is history, george carlin is my favourite comedian and i think of him more as a philosipher to me on top of anything else, because he has taught me to question and analyze everything i see and never take no for an answer, thankyou
LuvLennonMcCartney 2 years ago 32

I was never a big fan up until a little while ago, but he is sorely missed by myself and so many other, a legend in his own right.
fiftyfiveseventy 2 years ago 5
This three hour interview was completely worth the time. I learned many insightful things from just listening to him recount his life. I learned a lot I didn't know about him himself, but certain other things really caught my attention, such as jester/philosopher/poet image...things about dreams coming true...God, he was a great man. A person recounting comedy in the last third of the century could not exclude his influence and attributions to it, nor a person recounting our culture as a whole.

SloterMFmeyer 2 years ago 6
it basically means "too cool to be here"
xenutastic 2 years ago 5
I think "too hip for the room" is used when someone is making jokes but isn't getting laughs. It's like he was saying about "blame it on the audience." It's not him or the jokes that are at fault, is that the room isn't hip enough to get it.

I was wondering about this. I think (I could be wrong here, rumours are rumours) that books might be released with his notes. That would be awesome if it were true. I'm going to have a look for his older books.

jammin in new york is what got me into george carlin. i've watched it probably 20 or 30 times and it never gets old. i know the whole routine. every time my wife and i get on a plane together we go through the whole "safety lecture". he's one of the few guys that you can really point to and say, he made life happier for millions of people. how many religious fuckers can you say that about?

Yea, I played this for my 11 year old son way back then. He laughed SO HARD at "Jammin' In New York".

Wow I am simply speechless after watching the whole interview. Hearing George tell it in his own words was the only way this could have been done because no one else I have ever met does as good of a job of expressing the thoughts going inside of their head.

MetalMusa 2 years ago 6
I believe he meant simple as in: not an egomaniac. Or if he was, not actually showing it. Never taking the "rockstar" attitude etc..

Wow, I didn't even realize how much time went by after I got done with all of these. Thanks for posting all of the videos.

A very funny, intelligent and inspiring man.
I always believed comedians as being the philosophers of our modern day and George Carlin was definitely a man who exemplified that.
I never felt sad when he passed away because I knew he accomplished so much. If everyone could accomplish a quarter of what this man did then we'd all be in a better world.
