Hey Brian, I always appreciate your videos. I'm a mobile DJ new to uplighting. I'm considering buying the ADJ Pro38B LED RC lights. Are those bright enough for a wedding reception or should I go with Pro64s?
if you cant get mega panels or such like and you have led par cans but dont want a hotspot then you can by diffuser gels to fit in the gell frame on the front of the par cant and that will make there be no hotspot or the hot spot will be gratly reduced
Hey Brian, i need some help with choosing some led par cans to put under my scrim king on my speaker stands. i was thinking of getting the Colorsplash jrs but now im not sure...its just to put under my scrim so it doesnt need a long or big throw. Would you reccomend using the colorsplash jrs to do led wash under the scrim?
Hey Brian...Thanks for the information. I currently work as DJ in the New York/Hudson Valley area and requests for up lighting is really on the rise. I would like to get involved in being able to offer up lighting to my clients and have been doing A LOT of research and trying to get as much information to make an informed decision. I've been looking at the Slimpar56 or Colorstripmini to use..now I just have to research controllers and looking into wireless transmitters/receivers
Really helpful bro. I was looking for someone to break down the options and all your videos have really helped. I love the no nonsense, casual but informative vibe. Thank you a million from a fellow mobile DJ looking to figure out the lighting world.
The American DJ Par 64 Pro is a great light. It does so much! I usually put 2 of them in fade mode aimed at the ceiling / upper walls during slow dances, dinner, etc. for a little mood. I would agree w/ the comments about the diffuser though. You could probably even make your own, if you knew what you were doing. I just dropped a (very) few dollars on eBay to buy a few diffusion panels for them, & I'm so glad I did--hot spots gone.
Hey Brian, didn't look thru all the comments so I'm not sure if this has been brought up, but... have you ever considered putting a diffusion filter on your par cans? It'll soften up that 'hot-spot' very nicely. I know some vendors are selling plexi-glass versions that fit right in the 'gel' slots for only $5.... A pretty inexpensive option for people who can't afford to buy 10 different lights!
;-p.... on the subject of lightening up... i think i have some of my "old" metal halide fixtures in the basement.... 2kw floodligts..... and some other power hungry effects.... (some of these can give you a nice red and crispy/flaky tan) If i do find them i will post a short piece with them... anyway my point is... to power a decent array of these "old" effects your suddenly looking for more amps that the average main breaker in an average midsize home....
I don't know if this has been mentioned before but as a rule of thumb, id say every 1w of LED "replaces" 10w of "traditional" lighting. (or say 5w for good measure). And you can always point more LED pars on the same spot.... No worry about fragile bulbs exploding and drapes catching fire.... no UV radiation... (the bad kind not the cool purplish kind).
My reason for spewing quite a bit here, is lighting is something thats always been close to my hearth, something i've been real passionate about , i've taken great pride in pulling of, quite frankly, overkill light show for mid size crowds. Brian is obviously very experienced and does an amazing job with extensive review of these amazing lights. The benefits of LED is obvious for "uberpro" and "semipro" anyone that don't understand the advantages, simply haven't had much to do with lighting.
LED lights, cheap? yeaaa right dude. led lighting is not cheap in quality and definitely not cheap in price. Hallogen is quite sucky, so much power wasted, bulbs that have a relatively short life, no possiblity of color change without filters, etc.
(and im french so u cant diss me, last time i checked, us french peops make a lot of the music u listen to.)
Good vid brian, the way you used ur sweep was pretty nice!
hey brian! that was real cool!! I'm very envy of all of your stuff as well as jonathan's. you just showed me a very nice idea about upligthing. I don't have any dj gears yet planning to get. like what you've mentioned it's like a pay for the video you make.
What is it with you people from Belgium? Are you all rude as Hell or do I just get a bunch of rude people from Belgium commenting on my videos? The rest of the world is usually pretty nice about things, but 9 times out of 10, a rude comment is from some raveish person from Belgium. Is life miserable there so you hate everyone? Is it something in the water? What's up with this?
If you were stuck between "frenching" French people and weed toking Netherlanders... you'd be miserables too.... watching other people have fun makes some people very very bitter....
Besides these are bad times for people hating america(ns)...
how can one fuel ones hate when Obama havent given anyone a real reason to hate him just yet. Really bad to have so much anger and hate and no where to place it,well you seem to have fun so lets all hate you for it. Take Care n keep up the good stuff
True, but reason and sanity never stopped the insane and unreasonable before did it? You'r doing a good thing here, educational for the starters and good ideas for the seasoned vet. I don't need to tell you that you're well liked and appreciated, you can tell from your rating and feedback. So F'K!! the 0.001% that have such "eventful" lives that they need to dump shit on people doing good. NEVER be discouraged... We want it all, big as well as the small!!!
you got to be a bit carefull with your words there , i have got NOTHING against americans ,.. what irritates me, is those cheap ass lighting products.
also , the stereotype vision of Dutch people you got is a bit disrespectfull.
To be honest if i were to spend $10-20k+ on lighting i would dump most of it on what you call "cheap ligths" You can get like 10-20 movig heads for the price of one "snob brand" moving head. shure, not as bright as the gwat halogen. Basically you get 10 lights for the price of one and for the power consumption of one.... Not suitable if your doing huge stadiums but even at huge events, smaller ligths are good for stage oriented effects.....
Basically ADJ and the likes are targeting the rest of us that don't gig with manowar, madona and britney squeals....
I'm glad you can afford to buy "snob brand effect" and rent the generator farms needed to run a rig of them... The rest of us just cant afford such extravagant gear with such high investment and running cost.... Anyway lets put and end to dissing... The theme here is "love".
The comments I get from the Dutch people are disrespectful. I don't know if it's a language communication break-down or what, but if I get a rude comment, 9 times out of 10, when I look at that person's Youtube page, they are from Belgium.
Now, it may have something to do with what DJs are doing in Belgium that's very different from what I'm doing here. That's all fine and well, but WHY all the negative language twards me and my videos from people like you and your fellow countrymen?
Sorry I had to be noticed here Brian but I agree with you. Now I'm not trying to start a war with the Dutch or any one else, but I think there is some cultural difference's in manners. I had to respond to this cause I laughed my arse off reading your comment cause its so true.
again , NOTHING negative to you , but im going out on the idea that you want to grow in this, and that you want people to be happy , so you earn more money ? right ?
well , with those crappy ( my opinion , and a lot others ) led effects, you are not going to grow. trust me..
again , be carefull with your words, just that you think all dutch are disrespectfull , think again..
Here, Dorplein, when we, here in the states, do things like uplighting, LED is the way to go because of several reasons:
1, Power consumption. We use 110 here where Europe uses 220. It's easy to trip breakers here when we try to use high power consumption lights
2. LED does not get hot. Therefore, we can put this type of lighting against anything, including cloth drapes or table cloths without the risk of fire
3 . Low heat also means, when this type of lighting is on the floor, the chance of children, or anyone really of accedently touching one of these fixtures and burning themselves is eliminated.
4. One LED par can can be any color in the rainbow without switching out gels, so this reduces the ammount of cans we actually need for simple stage lighting
5. There are no bulbs to replace. Most Diods are good for 50,000 to 100,000 hours. This is cost effective for Mobile DJs
There are 5 reasons off the top of my head why LED works very well for DJs like myself.
Reasons 1, 2, 3, and 4 can be used for selling points when we are consulting with a client.
Why have I singled out Belgium as the rude ones? Because it seems that most rude commets COME FROM DJs from Belgium. I don't hate the Dutch, but the Dutch seem to think that the ONLY way to do things is the Dutch way and everyone else's way is "Useless".
I have seen some VERY impressive DJ systems from your part of the world. It seems when it comes to Mobile DJing, Belgium is doing some very impressive things.
However, most of the world is not going to be able to make a profit with giant systems like some I have seen from Belgium. We're doing things on a smaller scale and making a nice profit.
I understand this. Now, I thought I would point it out to you in hopes you can understand as well.
So, in conclusion, not only are these effects not "Crappy" or "Cheap", but they have actually helped my business "Grow" and I have made "Money" using these effects.
As far as being careful with my words, the reason I was not so careful with my words is to point out how rude your words sounded to the rest of us. I think you have, or hope so anyway.
Next time you make statements so "Matter-Of-Fact", make sure you are RIGHT before making them.
ok then , sorry if i was rude to you in your eyes..
But. there are way more cooler effects that you can use, that also are ''cheap'' and will do well...
another thing you can do is : not buying a lot of different effects like a mystic , a quad gem , etc.. but buy 2 or 4 of 1 type , that will look better than just some different lights trown together ;)
You are right. When using multiple effects, it's often more appealing if you use several of the same effect.
Thing is, the trend here is "Less Is More". My clients, as of the last year or so are shying away from the "Nightclub" light show experience and going for a more subtle minimalistic, inconspicuous yet functional light show.
So, one of each effect light is usually all I need. I did use 2 of the Revo Sweeps at my last gig and they worked really nice. Got complements too!
Yes, probably. Judging from some of the giant mobile systems I've seen from your part of the world, you are also probably making more money per gig than we are over here.
I'd gladly build a giant PA and concert style cage truss system if I could get the clientel in my part of the country to pay for something like that. However, most work is for smaller venues at smaller rates.
IF you have somethign against them, then don't use them by all means.
You should probably know that here in the states, it's becoming next to impossible to use Fog. This means that many of the great lighting effects like scanners and moving heads are now not producing the desired effect one would expect. Therefore, alternatives must be used. If used propperly, they can produce a really nice effect that, yes, my CLIENTS complement me on.
It has to do with fire alarms and strict fire codes. It seems that when there is an inconsistancy in the air, even if it is not smoke from a fire, the fire alarms can go off.
Yes, one COULD turn off the fire alarms while fog is being used, but then this would go against the strict building and fire codes. So it's very seldom that many of us here are able to use Fog. Even Haze has been banned from most halls
nothing with belgian's , also nothing against you ..
but those led lights are just worthless.. they are just a bunch of cheap-ass wannabe pro light effects. It's ruining the whole idea of an good lightshow.
especially if they are in sound active mode.
anybody with a bit of knowledge of lighting, and someone who really loves lighting , wil know that these led product are far from good.
However, to say they are "Worthless" is a rediculous statement & has no merit. They are worth something to me and to tens of thousands of other professionals out there.
Lol. Could be, I don't know. I think it's just bad luck. I don't know where his comment comes from when it comes to LED lights sucking either. I guess some Belgians tend to take their opinion as absolute truth. I don't know what's up in other countries, so I don't know. Don't worry Brian, there are enough friendly people down here too ;)
But you could be right tho... Just looking at our political situation the past couple of months... :D "Why can't we all get along". Oh well, keep it up, Brian!
Great video :-) I quite enjoyed the bringing back of Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Remix)
Every once in a while if the crowd is just right I drop the remix of Insomnia by Faithless which usually freaks people out because they've never heard it or not heard it for a very long time. :-)
Cheers,

PS - If you're taking requests for music on your next video then bust out the CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter ;-)
Hey Biran, Cool Up Lighting Video! I Have A Small Picture Of That Same Picture You Have In The Backround "The DJ Scratching On The Turntables With The Long Fingers"!
Here is your payment, nice video. Uplighing looked good as usual, my church as been using the ADJ par64 lights for uplighing, I need to do a video on that, may spark ideas in the future for someone. BTW, do I hear the Klipsch speakers again :D .
Thatnks for the warm up, I can't wait for the 50 cent tour of the dungeon.
Glad to see the new dungeon coming along! I will try to do some up-lighting videos as well when I get more into it. I only do basic uplighting with just par cans right now. But they're coming!

great video Brian-you do such a great job of enunciating & pacing your words . It makes everything you say so easy to understand-You would be great for any educational channel, corporate training videos, travel channel etc. with your speaking talents alone-the fact that you're a great DJ is just an xtra plus.
Hi Brian thanks for the great video. I have my first wedding DJ gig this weekend. I have learned a lot from your videos and I appreciate the info. Keep it coming!
That helped greatly Brian! We have a derby X and I didn't even have the thought of putting it behind us creating a neat effect as we are in the DJ booth. Great vid. Helpful tips!
amazing guide, thank you!

but those led lights are just worthless.. they are just a bunch of cheap-ass wannabe pro light effects. It's ruining the whole idea of an good lightshow.
especially if they are in sound active mode.
anybody with a bit of knowledge of lighting, and someone who really loves lighting , wil know that these led product are far from good.
dorplein62 3 years ago
Hey man, go with what works for you.
However, to say they are "Worthless" is a rediculous statement & has no merit. They are worth something to me and to tens of thousands of other professionals out there.
briansredd 3 years ago

Brian,
Great video :-) I quite enjoyed the bringing back of Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Remix)
Every once in a while if the crowd is just right I drop the remix of Insomnia by Faithless which usually freaks people out because they've never heard it or not heard it for a very long time. :-)
Cheers,
|M|ookie
PS - If you're taking requests for music on your next video then bust out the CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter ;-)

Here is your payment, nice video. Uplighing looked good as usual, my church as been using the ADJ par64 lights for uplighing, I need to do a video on that, may spark ideas in the future for someone. BTW, do I hear the Klipsch speakers again :D .
Thatnks for the warm up, I can't wait for the 50 cent tour of the dungeon.
weasel2htm 3 years ago 2
Glad to see the new dungeon coming along! I will try to do some up-lighting videos as well when I get more into it. I only do basic uplighting with just par cans right now. But they're coming!
DJJimmyT99 3 years ago 2
color spash jr. looks cool but that BIG par can is better.

Who know name of the song ?

Good to have you back on the tutorial scene.
The Revo Sweep looks bad ass on the wall , Almost club style. It would be a good idea to use that behind you at a school dance maybe
vidalesc 3 years ago
great video Brian-you do such a great job of enunciating & pacing your words . It makes everything you say so easy to understand-You would be great for any educational channel, corporate training videos, travel channel etc. with your speaking talents alone-the fact that you're a great DJ is just an xtra plus.

nice! i didnt think normal lights could do effiecient uplighting too :D
