oh damn! Thank you for the help! I was just thinking how wonderful it would be to grow a bonsai tree from a seed.... Now I got second thoughts. But I am only 24yrs old so I think if I do decide to dedicate time and patience, I will do it! By the time I am a Granny, I'll have a wonderful bonsai tree! Maybe if I have children, I'll grow one right after I give birth so it will be as old as them n if they move out, I will always have something that signifies them. hahahaha

I planted some bonsai seeds that i got around my bday in Nov. 08. Three sprouted in like Feb and are now about 3 inches tall. They better be bonsai seeds because the kit i bought cost $10!

there are no specific bonsai seeds, there are only tree seeds. the bonsai trees stay small because they are taken care of and pruned.

the idea with bonsais is to avoid dogmatic rules like this. sure, some of the nicer looking bonsais have been trained and developed.. doesn't make it a rule.

besides my original point was that bonsai isn't a species, its a tree in a small pot. how many bonsais have you grown mr. expert?

By what you're saying, I could have a horrible mess in a small pot, and it would be a bonsai because it's a tree, it's in a small pot, and it's still barely alive. Also, there are many larger trees that are considered bonsai, and they can require several people to lift. Bonsai isn't limited to trees. It's possible to grow any plant as a bonsai... even grass. Google it.

No.. obviously they shoot within weeks, but those "seedlings" he showed were past the initial sprouting phase. They just take longer. Much longer. Bonsai isn't something you can accomplish within one season, and even if you can, your Bonsai won't be very attractive. It won't have any of the characteristic age marks and weathering that make Bonsai's attractive.

if you are in more arid region, Legumes (like acacia, palo-verde and Deasert fern) are beautiful trees and grow VERY quckly, most are ready to style within 2-3 years.

hmm I planned to grow my Japanese Red Maple from seed and I knew it would take patience,but now I'm getting a little discouraged...but I've got a feeling that when Momiji(my tree's name even though she[the seed] has yet to arrive)is about 10 that it will have been worth it :)

you can find very nice naturally stunted specimens in the wild. It just takes a little luck and some knowledge to find them. I think it's much more rewarding to find your trees than to by them from a nursery.

I am growing bonsais from a couple of ginkgo tree seeds. When they were about 8 months old, I trimmed the roots a bit and repotted them in bonsai pots. THey are both growing on a south-facing window sill with the window open anywhere from 2 inches to a couple of feet. THey are absolutely beautiful and NOT getting any taller. What do I do next? Can't find ANY information on the care of ginkgos. . .
