@expertvillage can you do a bonsai with any tree? Cause I would love to do one with my national tree the Ceiba Pentandra (Im from Guatemala in central america) please I would reallly appreciate your help.
"how to grow bonsai from seed" the title should be renamed to "why not to grow bonsai by seed" this video wasn't very helpfull. I really wanted to start by a seed. you didn't give any tips.
oh damn! Thank you for the help! I was just thinking how wonderful it would be to grow a bonsai tree from a seed.... Now I got second thoughts. But I am only 24yrs old so I think if I do decide to dedicate time and patience, I will do it! By the time I am a Granny, I'll have a wonderful bonsai tree! Maybe if I have children, I'll grow one right after I give birth so it will be as old as them n if they move out, I will always have something that signifies them. hahahaha
@pokemonmasterJL you too huh? I don't have a problem with God's creation... just the humans who use it to inflict fear upon others... If it's really that important, you can just google it or open the dictionary or whatever... -_-
I planted some bonsai seeds that i got around my bday in Nov. 08. Three sprouted in like Feb and are now about 3 inches tall. They better be bonsai seeds because the kit i bought cost $10!
@mikecuzins whatever... "fact" in this case is vague. Bonsai is an art form, and like any other art form, everyone has their own interpretation. For example, many will say that rap is not music, while others say it is.
@zanychimp granted bonsai is an art form. but there are NO rules that apply here, as long as fundamentally you are growing your tree in a small pot. you don't HAVE to train them or develop a shape or anything.
the idea with bonsais is to avoid dogmatic rules like this. sure, some of the nicer looking bonsais have been trained and developed.. doesn't make it a rule.
besides my original point was that bonsai isn't a species, its a tree in a small pot. how many bonsais have you grown mr. expert?
@mikecuzins Chill. I never called myself an expert on the matter. But I have researched it. By what you're saying, I could have a horrible mess in a small pot, and it would be a bonsai because it's a tree, it's in a small pot, and it's still barely alive. Also, there are many larger trees that are considered bonsai, and they can require several people to lift. Bonsai isn't limited to trees. It's possible to grow any plant as a bonsai... even grass. Google it.
@mikecuzins "victory balls?" What, you could only afford the surgery with the money you got from your victory? You clearly are not mature enough or smart enough to have an argument without putting the other person down. Go hang out with that Bieber kid and stay off the internet.
@mikecuzins Shut up. I am ending this simply because you are an ass, and nothing I say can change you. Your existence is barely worth the 5 or so youtube comments I posted to you, and that's being generous. I am done talking to you.
i remember where i got my first bonsai it was just siting there in a dark corner and it looked like hell so i bought it and fixed it up right now it got a lil too much sun and the leaves fell off but i can already see new leaves :)
No.. obviously they shoot within weeks, but those "seedlings" he showed were past the initial sprouting phase. They just take longer. Much longer. Bonsai isn't something you can accomplish within one season, and even if you can, your Bonsai won't be very attractive. It won't have any of the characteristic age marks and weathering that make Bonsai's attractive.
actually no need to worry these seeds that hes using are most likely very slow growing I can ASSURE YOU in nine years a seedling will look 15 TIMES BIGGER THAN THAT and much fatter.
OK so i want to start bonsai and i bought a kit(miniature indoor bonsai Canadian sugar maple tree from the master herbalist) and i was just wondering if that was a good choice.
if you are in more arid region, Legumes (like acacia, palo-verde and Deasert fern) are beautiful trees and grow VERY quckly, most are ready to style within 2-3 years.
hmm I planned to grow my Japanese Red Maple from seed and I knew it would take patience, but now I'm getting a little discouraged...but I've got a feeling that when Momiji(my tree's name even though she[the seed] has yet to arrive)is about 10 that it will have been worth it :)
you can find very nice naturally stunted specimens in the wild. It just takes a little luck and some knowledge to find them. I think it's much more rewarding to find your trees than to by them from a nursery.
I am growing bonsais from a couple of ginkgo tree seeds. When they were about 8 months old, I trimmed the roots a bit and repotted them in bonsai pots. THey are both growing on a south-facing window sill with the window open anywhere from 2 inches to a couple of feet. THey are absolutely beautiful and NOT getting any taller. What do I do next? Can't find ANY information on the care of ginkgos. . .
This is absolutely important for beginners to watch! Many of them think they can create a bonsai with an awesome nebari and a fat trunk from seed in like five years - which is not true obviously. ;-)

there are no specific bonsai seeds, there are only tree seeds. the bonsai trees stay small because they are taken care of and pruned.

bonsai isnt a species of tree, you can have any species of tree you want, bonsai is the art of keeping the tree small.
mikecuzins 2 years ago
@mikecuzins Not just keeping it small. You also need to develop the shape and all that.
zanychimp 1 year ago
@zanychimp you dont HAVE to do anything...
bonsai literally means, a tree or shrub grown in a small or shallow pot. occuring naturally in shallow soil or cracks in rocks...
soo maybe you should check your facts
