  • So simple & sweet

  • DL the audio from this track at thetunify doht cohm.

  • sounds like the Vandellas on this back ground..they did all Marvins early back grounds...this is Martha and the Vandellas oh yeah!!!!!!!

  • No, Martha & the Vandellas took their name from Della Reese and a street called Van Dyke.

  • @soulmusicluver Yes!! You can, definately, hear Flo!! I just completed reading The Lost Supreme. Marvin Gaye was quoted as saying that Flo was "a hell of a singer. The strongest of the three girls". RIP Marvin.

  • i love how the drums are panned to the right aand the other instuments to the left (:

  • THANK YOUUUUUU FOR HAVING POSTED THIS!! :D

  • I believe James Jamerson plays upright bass on this one, it really sounds like it....

  • I have always loved this, especially the break down at the 1:57 mark...

  • i believe the jamaicans stole this idea as part of their dub plate industry just to sell the instrumental track -but they went a step farther and incorporated electronics to emphasize the tracks thus influencing legends like coxone and tubby

  • I Miss the 'other' background parts that made this so 'WONDERFUL'! And who is that 'man' singing alongside The Supremes? I never heard that before! Hmmmmmm ;-P

  • Thanks for posting this, this confirms what I suspected, that bass player James Jamerson played upright bass on this one!!

  • AWESOME post!

I have the acapella of Marvin with the backing by The Supremes. Marvin sounds sooo good and Flo really shines on the backing.

  • this is even good without the words..this is the first time i am hearing it..nice!

  • You're right, the Supremes did the backing on this track. I remember Marvin saying, and I think it was on the Motown Story box set, that he gave the Vandellas their name, because after Martha and the girls sang backing vocals on some of his early stuff, he thought that they vandalised the tracks, hence the name.

Just another piece of Motown folk-law no doubt, like Diana Ross discovered the Jackson 5 and Tammi Terrell sang The Onion Song with Marvin.

  • Many years ago Martha Reeves said that The Vandellas came from:

Van-Dyke Bld. in Detroit and her favorite female singer: Della Reese....hence "VAN-DELLAs".

  • @sandfordway

My story goes like this: The Van came from Van Dyke Street in Detroit which was where Martha lived at the time and the Della part honoured Della Reese, Martha's favourite singer and a Detroit native herself.
