The reason Eric doesn't play it exactly like the studio version is because he can't play 4 guitars at once. It's not one, not two, not three but four guitar tracks throughout almost the entire song. And they are played by both him and Duane.

i love it but i wish someone on youtube would actually play the original guitar pieces, clapton doesnt in concert for two reasons, whats believed to be clapton on the original is really duane allman and clapton couldnt play allmans piece if he wanted to! the lead guitar part nowadays except for when clapton falls back on his lazy acoustic version is still similar to what its been since the mid 70's after the death of duane allman, it fills the song,the lyrics and that classic riff.

There is always an assuption by those skilled in one area of anything, that anyone can do as they do because they did it. That is NOT the case at all. Some people need to see. Others need to hear AND see. Still others can play it just by hearing it. We are not all the same. There are very few musical robots out there. I MAY learn, eventually, to play by ear but only AFTER I have learned to see.

@DumblyBrilliant although I'd agree everyone learns differently, unless one is deaf or blind I'd think it would be impossible to learn one and not the other. One COULD learn to play by ear, however because you're so used to seeing either sheet music or tabs you won't learn by ear because of the time and effort required to try and find and play the song note by note. Or one could be so used to playing by ear and have memorized all the notes on the fretboard its harder to play by looking at tabs.

I have to admit that I have some ability to play by ear, not because I have tried to do it, though I have, but because I have naturally picked up some ability as I have played. I can tune from the strings for example once I have the 6th string in tune. It is not a question of being lazy I think it is more of a question of developing the skill over time. I have a friend who is staggeringly skilled but who never to read.
