  • Wow -- look at Gilbert stick to his game plan of taking the pace off the ball. The only time he tops over it big is to put the ball by Becker at the net. Just amazing discipline!

  • This is REAL tennis!

  • a pusher hitting winners left and right!!

  • why did everyone make fun of gilbert's strokes? they really aren't abnormal.

  • I prefer the clash of personalities back then.

  • Oh yeah, remember when Brad Gilbert had a 4-1 record against Becker, until becker won the last FIVE times they played?

  • Actually @osiris3657, tennis is WAY more boring now!

  • @sangfreud I don't agree with that. The power, spin, and athleticism displayed in today's game is awesome to watch.

  • LOL1 wHAT A PUSHER!!

  • highly entertaining

  • Wow, Gilbert was 4-6 against Becker. That ain't bad, especially given the record Boris had against top 10ers.

  • Gilbert and his fro absolutely own Lendl! Brad used to pulverize him. Check their head-to-head record yourself.

  • @scottdavis0676 LOLZ. That's one player that he never could "Win Ugly" against.

  • @Raindogs111 I was being sarcastic LOL. I wanted to see how long it would be before somebody called me out on my comments.

  • I believe it was US open 1987 when Gilbert won in five set 2-6 6-7 7-6 7-5 6-1 in the R16

  • @Gamereo no thats a different video

  • It's a thing of beauty watching Gilbert just 'junker' Becker into submission. Becker 100% looks like he's playing in zero gravity. Gilbert just puts him to sleep and Becker ends up playing pusher / junker tennis as well.

Some of Brads push shots towards the end of the video are just insane to see, especially in light of the shots we see today from the top elite. classic learnings here for club players

  • maybe for some people is boring (kids), but this tennis players has personality that remains till today, something that the new players dont have.....and the matches were pure eximent because of that.......like boxing, looking foward to the rumbble.....i got to play challengers, i´m 37 years old now and still loving the game......so enjoy your present time and be proud of the past time...you´ll get there....soon

  • @aldoreneator Thank you. Great post!

  • People always talk about how ugly Brad's shots are. They are very sound shots and he uses a very heavy racket. What wins him matches is that he's SO FAST. Plus Becker is attacking on a surface that is so slow and doesn't skid. Again Lendl would have crushed Brad because he's patient. Becker played like an idiot try to attack impatiently with subpar tactics. Brad still needs jaw surgery as much as todd robert needs viagra every night.

  • good stuff from gilbert, brad seemed to be a very good player/competitor, when he was on the pro tour..

  • confirmed: cincinnati 1989 SF: Gilbert def. Becker 3-6; 6-3, 6-4

  • anyone recognise the stadium? 1994Tokyo BB 6-3, 6-0 1992Masters Paris BB 6-2, 6-2 1990Wimbledon BB 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 1990World Team Cup RRBB 6-1, 6-1 1989Masters NY RRBB 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 1989Cincinnati OH, BG 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 1988DallasBB 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 1987Masters NYBG 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 1987US Open BG 2-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 6-1 1987Washington BG 3-6, 6-3, 6-0
  • Let me tell you a story.

    Lendl played Gilbert 16 times.

    Guess what?

    Gilbert lost 16 times.

Lendl never fell for this garbage play.

  • @dura1mater Gilbert won most of his matches through effective mental play. Unfortunately for him, Lendl had better strokes and could break down gilbert's game just as Gilbert broke Becker down in this video.

  • @wiihax24 Like I said-He was the king of garbage. Very ugly demenor on the court too. An ultimate hacker.

  • @dura1mater I love listening to guys who suck and never made it on tour ridicule a former top 5 player.

    Show some respect fool.

  • @toddrobert38 Gilbert was a piece of shit. I even beat him at Bolliteri. Guy's a mouth full of shit who needs jaw surgery.

  • @dura1mater

omg, your just sore because he made it and obviously you did not.

you can call a guy a jerk thats one thing, but when you insult his game, that's just ridiculous. he was #4 in the world dude.

childhood practice matches mean exactly this... ZERO

  • @toddrobert38 You're right. But he stills needs jaw surgery.

  • @dura1mater

    lol

from what i hear you and several other people are close to throwing a right hook that will cause him to actually have the procedure done. i think andy roddick is one of them, except he needs to be bent over a nun's knee himself

  • love this vid- Gilbert justs jerks Becker all over the place with change of oace, angle etc. Winning ugly in the extreme!

  • "no pace brad, repeat, no pace" quote from Winning Ugly and what a fabulous last point

  • Interesting moment at 1:44. Becker shows just how lazy he is with his footwork versus a Federer / Nadal. He gets a slow floater pretty much at his body. The natural thing for a modern aggressive player would be to ENSURE you run around to hit a forceful forehand. No, Becker simply stands like a putz and takes it on his backhand. This is a great example of how Fed got to be #1 - he worked on his legs so he would never miss a chance like this one to hit a more forceful forehand shot.

  • Gilbert was a decent player. Didn't have a lot of power, but would hit what the other player wasn't comfortable with. Very under-rated.

  • You gotta read the book "Winning Ugly" by Gilbert. I like what he says how he strategizes before every match. When hed play Becker and when he hit a approach to his one handed backhand, Gilbert would "camp out on the alley", lol. You know you got Becker on the ropes when he starts yelling profanities in German, Gilbert said, lol.

  • that last point was SICK. I've only been watching pro tennis for about 8 years, but it looks to me that watching tennis back in the day wouldn't be as boring as you'd think.

  • @Osiris3657 SHIT!!! You wrote what I just thought!!

  • why is becker so bad here?

  • The Strategist

  • last point was awesome

  • I think it's Cincinnati 1989, semifinal. Gilbert won 3:6 6:3 6:4; later he defeated Edberg in the final 6:4 2:6 7:6

  • awesome to be able to watch this. Thanks for uploading!

  • This is US Open 1987. Gilbert writes about that match in his book "Winning Ugly".

  • Are you sure? The court doesn't seem an Us open venue.

  • I'm not a big tennis conaisseur... but Gilbert's description sounds very much like this match. You can read it here:
