Gloves are designed to protect the hands, not the person getting hit. Theres a reason why so many security experts advise palm strikes to the head and not a closed fist. It is very easy to damage your hand if you miss the chin and strike the skull instead. And since boxers are only allowed to punch, they need all the padding they can get.

The reason why is when u see a punch coming at you you have a natural instinct to duck and tuck your chin putting the hardest part of your head into the punch. First of all, a boxing glove is larger, that force is spread over a larger area and does less damage, second, MMA gloves are smaller and lighter, therefore punches can be thrown faster and more accurately. Thirdly, MMA gloves can sneak through a fighters defenses much more easily than a boxing glove. boxing gloves are so big all you have to do is hold them up and you'll probably deflect punches

what they don't realize is that force is different than impact. Force is obviously the same as it is the same punching movement. The boxing glove has less impact because of the greater cushioning. A large force will not knock someone out, a large impact will.

The reason the gloves are smaller in MMA is not because the fighters are somehow tougher but because they are designed for grappling as well as striking.

But MMA is not about taking punches. There is elbow, knee, and shin striking with throwing, grappling, and ground work to take into account, hence, chins and punches CANNOT be the focus of what drives a good fighter.

The reason why is when u see a punch coming at you you have a natural instinct to duck and tuck your chin putting the hardest part of your head into the punch. First of all, a boxing glove is larger, that force is spread over a larger area and does less damage, second, MMA gloves are smaller and lighter, therefore punches can be thrown faster and more accurately. Thirdly, MMA gloves can sneak through a fighters defenses much more easily than a boxing glove. boxing gloves are so big all you have to do is hold them up and you'll probably deflect punches

what they don't realize is that force is different than impact. Force is obviously the same as it is the same punching movement. The boxing glove has less impact because of the greater cushioning. A large force will not knock someone out, a large impact will.

@caml17 There really isn't much difference in the thickness of padding around the point of impact on both gloves. The boxing gloves do weigh more but the padding is spread more. The reason the gloves are smaller in MMA is not because the fighters are somehow tougher but because they are designed for grappling as well as striking.
