  • Dude you killed it, great job !

  • sweet dude! thanks!

  • if anyone is interested in having a look at my version , max session version , don't have much money so just on a crappy guitar thanks :P

  • saammmy i love you(:

  • impressive !

  • this guy makes ben lapps look like a beginner.

  • saw in the bar someone had done a cover of this so I pressed it and thought this will be bad...

But wow you blow my mind away mate! amazing!!!

  • is playing 12 string really hard? Because I can play ocean on a 6 string and easily tune things to c... are the chords still the same finger placings?

  • @butkicker75 Nope! Same finger placings. It just takes a little more finger strength, that's all!

  • someone got pussy that night

  • Crowd eating, talking, whispering during the music, we say the performance was wonderful, the camera person could of remained quite during the filming, it messing things up when chattering during a shoot. Put a sock in it next time you roll'em camera QUITE ON THE SET!! THIS IS A TAKE!

  • I love this :DD

  • How did you learn this?

  • @DrakenGuardz from watching John play it! I picked most of it up by ear and watching his fingerings. A lot of it is improvisation. I think when I first sat down to learn it I looked at a couple tabs, but that was only for a little bit of the tapping part.

  • @Begonias6969 That's crazy man... I'm learning this song right now, and I agree most of it is improvisation o_o

  • Show off, could of picked s better solo from Australia say now 2cd best guitar. check jeremy Marou from Busby Marou. 3 years now mate you must really whale

  • got any tips for someone thats new to open C tuning?

  • that was a fuckin awesome effort, nice arrangement. i usually troll like hell, but man, this is fuckin great.

  • Great Job! how many strings is that? it looks like a lot more than usual

  • Ey, This kid rocks Good job man, seriously. Greetings from Cali

  • We're not worthy!

  • Dude, it's really awesome! and i like your personnal intro!

Just got a question: how do you make it sound so good :) i can't get to do it that loud !!

  • brilliant mate. love the tone. what is your gear?

  • @Blackiechan2711 thanks brotha! I was playing a Takamine EG523SC12 through a Peavey Valve King 212 with a Boss Md-2 and a Morley Little Alligator Volume pedal

  • They did NOT just close the curtain on you!

  • hes even amazed at what hes playing. thats why his face is like that

  • This is kind of an insult to the song. It's so robotic, like he doesn't even know what to feel. He's just playing the notes...

  • @WilliamRampart I think you're just jealous bro

  • Damn nigga you da shit

  • how hard is 12 string guitar to learn?

  • @JordanGuitar523 Not hard. If you can play a 6 string you can play a 12 string. However, the guitar I am playing is in open C tuning, which may take you a little while to learn and adjust to!

  • Hey everyone. This show was almost 4 years ago. If you would like to hear some of my recent stuff, please visit my blues/pop band's website. Type Hundred Yard Smash in Google. It should be the first result! Enjoy!

    Sam

  • BRAVO!

  • Dude close your mouth or else Flies will go inside :P

  • amazing

  • lol @ mouth

  • Awesome!!!!!!! You did Great for your first show!!!!

  • @Meldriin -- There's definitely a different feel to the strings themselves. Steel strings are harder on your fingers; if you don't have calluses you'll be hurting (although if you're learning to play this then you've probably got calluses).

    @Begonias -- Nice job!

  • why does it seem like he's mid-yawn the entire time?

  • @zatchmo1988 let it rock.

  • Im learning to play this song, and I've noticed that John Butler and this fine gentleman uses 12 (or 11) strings. What's the differance, and isn't it harder to do pulloffs when you have an extra string?

  • @Meldriin, John just doesn't like the sound of the high g-string so he took it off. When I first started playing with a 12 string I played with and without the high g, and found that I also like it better with it off.

  • @Begonias6969 I see... Also, do you use steel or nylon strings? Personally I love the sound that nylon makes, but I notice that so many uses steel. Is there any differance apart from sound?

  • @Begonias6969 how long have u been playing?

  • @chuggaaconor at the time of this performance i had been playing for about 4 1/2 years, now its going on 6 1/2

  • @Begonias6969 nice ive been trying to learn it but its to hard

  • WOW.

  • god DAMMMMNNN DUDE!!! im learning to play this right now and you just blew my mind.

  • This audience knows good music when they hear it!

  • the best cover i've ever heard of this song. and i've heard them all :)

  • Incredible. And playing those really difficult, high energy parts while having a ton of amazed people cheering you on must have made you feel invincible...and you deserve it.

  • really needs to close his mouth ......

  • How many girls did you sleep with after this piece?

  • thats an awesome cover man, top work. screw anyone who has something negative to say, performing is never easy, the first time is bloody terrifying and you did an amazing job. nice one!

  • That was a really awesome performance of a great song. Good job man. This definitely makes me interested to dee your other stuff

  • @coffey1 Thank you. I've got a 7 track ep coming out within the next month, keep checking in either on my website or on youtube for the songs/videos.

  • Incase none of you read the info, I'm the lead guitar and singer in a band now. Check out my original song "Waiting" on my page. It's got a nice Jack Johnson feel to it. Let me know what you think!

  • I bet after this you got all of the pussy. ALL OF IT!

  • God work! How did you learn it?

  • For ten minutes you were a god. How awesome is that?

  • @TheHightFamily haha i wouldnt say it was godlike, but it was still pretty awesome.

  • best nine minutes spent

  • Really good job!

  • AMAZING!

  • you are relly good at playing this song... can t believe it... nice work!

  • holy fucking shit this is nuts, you just blew my goddamn motherfucking mind man.

  • wow, great job. I think my first song in public was Wild Thing, no comparison.

  • I've just witnessed something truly magical.

  • @shaylarox96 thank you :)

  • You picked quite the song to start off with...nice work.

  • Fantastic man! great job!

  • agreeed....the facial expressions are wonderful to see. shows that you're a musician. you're lost in what youre playing and thats important. its not about looking pretty.

  • That last minute straight was fucking intoxicating. This is SO impressive.

  • I had a great time listening to you man. Keep doing that awesome job!

  • amazing

  • amazing job. really, anyone able to play this song in full = incredible, amazing, and awesome

  • that boy charged his laser for over 9 minutes

  • you deffinetly have some talent mate, nice takamine to

  • Seriously, keep your mouth closed..

  • the best cover of ocean by far. absolutely amazing ;)...i was jw what effects/amp you used to get the same sound as JB does? keep it up though, seriously good stuff :D

  • DUDE!

This is amazing...You covered my favorite version of Ocean and it's so insanely epic

  • I wish you had turned down the treble a little. Fantastic job though

  • @ahonsarkar - it was wierd, my brother was sitting in the crowd and said the bass was too high.. I think the crappy camera made it sound different. .. thanks though!

  • Dude,

YOU ARE SERIOUSLY AMAZING! I literally teared up with every strum of the guitar! you are without a doubt a true inspiration! wow, im in awe Sam! And hey, haters gonna hate, but how the hell can you hate on something so perfect? Answer: they can't say shit about you and your awesome skills, hope you develop them fully so that i may one day see you live in a concert!

    Sincerely, Chris

  • Sam, to be honest... this is Ocean. I don't think I have EVER seen JB play it the same everytime. The speeding up in some spots actually got the crowd going. The "stupid face" is made by a lot of rock stars/musicians everytime they play; it's just one of those things. Awesome job on such a complex piece.

Side note: Haters are gonna hate. Doesn't make them any better. You got talent, kid.

  • 9 people don't know what an Ocean feels like.

    Amazing. <3

  • I dont normally write comments but i mist say that was some awesome skill, talent and love for music, its not an easy song to play and you mastered it with your own look on it

very nice cover dont stop playing!

  • I hope after you got done shredding that guitar you shredded and equal amount of pussy.

  • <3 face

  • good for u man, butler's ocean is my favorite guitar piece and for ur first time infront of a crowd, taking on such a rediculously hard song, u killlled it. Keep playin music

  • Repping the Takamine ;)

  • I hate how people are commenting on your face. Your face gives the sign that you're not just playing the music, you're actually feeling it. People should watch john butlers live version of this. His face is fucked up the whole time because hes just like you, feels the music.

  • Comment removed

  • Close your mouth! :D

  • Excellent!!!

  • nice face

  • Hey there really enjoyed your version of ocean ! Where are you from? I have a cover of ocean on my page check it out !

  • this is great, but u put no emotion into the song.

  • @klausthesexymouse That is such a fucking retarded statement.

  • @666SlayerThrash No Klausthesexymouse is very correct. You have good guitarists, and you have good performers. But either is nothing if you don't feel the song flowing within you. If you can feel the song, then the audience will feel it with you.

It's unfortunate that i have to say that i can't feel the emotion in this piece, even though he is obviously brilliant.

  • @rhodestar dear rhodestar and klausethesexymouse. So what is your your criteria for a good ("emotional") performance? is it to cock your head, close your eyes and contort your facial expressions? Give me a friggin break! Get back to me when you can play this well and or get 21,000 views.

  • @kevin57571 No, just because someone gets up, plays guitar, sticks their tongue out and looks like a retard doesn't mean they have emotion, it just means they don't know what they look like when they play. Honestly emotion can't be seen or heard. It's just a feeling you get. A feeling of soul. I feel nothing when I see this. It sounds amazing and he plays incredibly well, he improv'd a lot of the piece which was pretty excellent. There is just no soul in this guy's guitar playing.

  • Maybe is you played guitar for 7 years like I then maybe you'd understand. If you have played guitar for a very long time. Good For You! And maybe one day you'll be able to feel music instead of hear it. When I listen to music, most of the time i don't even pay attention to the melody or the lyrics. I just listen for the very essence of the soul. And that is why i made the comment that there is no emotion. The timbre is just all wrong.

  • @rhodestar how bout ya go suck a wang

  • @rhodestar suck a bag of dicks sir; the whole bag.

  • @rhodestar die. suck dick

  • @rhodestar dear rhodestar and klausethesexymouse. So what is your your criteria for a good ("emotional") performance? is it to cock your head, close your eyes and contort your facial expressions? Give me a friggin break! Get back to me when you can play this well and or get 21,000 views.

  • @klausthesexymouse i wish i could spit in your face

  • this is so amazing

  • Excellent job :) You've inspired me to pick up the instrument again :)

  • @sharathchandra29 thank you very much, and awesome! stick with it!

  • great job man!

  • it looks like you are going to eat the guitar,

and yea, you are really absorving all of it, all the music :)

  • This is Great, I Would love to be able to play like this. Moving piece of music

  • i keep thinking your yawning lol

  • @seage12 haha yeah i know, it was my first time playing in front of people. I was so focused on not messing up that I didn't think about the stupid face I was making =D

  • @Begonias6969 ahahaha you did well keep it up man (Y)

  • @Begonias6969 Me,you and pretty much every guitarist out there make's faces while playing :) We sure do look wierd but whatever man :D

  • 3:17 holy shit kid. mad props

  • Great man, but let go of the blades and make this finger nails go crazy!

This music without the fingering is not the same.

Certainly the best cover of John that I've ever seen.

    Greetings from Brazil.

  • John Butler has his mouth open every time he plays this one, too!

You did a great job! I like it very much!

    Greetings from Germany

  • Wow great job man you totally owned it , john butler would be proud ,nice work :)

  • god dude thatr really was sick^^ wish i saw that live!

  • That was Fucking epic! i think you made that tune your own, an amazing cover of an amazingly hard song to play too. The best cover yet and it sounds like a casual jam session, boy got skills!

  • qwfhnkiuytffvccvbnjkk sorry kidd it was my jizz in the fucking keyboard

  • Amazing cover :) You can hear the sound of 200 girls that want you to be their boyfriend in the crowd

  • John would be proud of you son.

  • best 9:47 minutes of my day...so ballin

  • this is bro. i love JBT and i just saw them both Nov.9th and 10th with dave matthews. and he played this both nights. its one of m favorite songs. You did an outstanding job! i havent heard an Ocean cover this good! Nice work man!

    breathe easy.

  • sick man!

  • bravo.... very cool. great jam, and i loved the way that you made it your own here and there.. good stuff...

i also like the smile near the end... keep jamming my friend....

  • Well done man that was a pleasure to watch! Really appreciate it. I can only hope to be as good as you some day lol good luck in the future, you can make it big!

  • I like the improve dude nice!! great jobb! CHeck out my video.

  • I like the improve dude nice!! great jobb! CHeck out my video

  • Your a beast sir. Keep that shit up.

  • @tengauged haha thanks a lot!!

  • That was so sick.

And it was funny how you just walked away right after you were done like "Yeah, that just happened, dawg". Amazing cover. Great job dude.

  • @FactsOfLifee haha yeah I didn't know what to do..didnt want to embarrass myself or feel awkward so i just walked off.. got a lot of comments about that after the show lol... but thanks a lot man.

  • hey what pedals are you using?

  • @bizza52 a Morley Alligator Volume Pedal, and a Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion Pedal (really low). If you go to the early comments on this video I tell everyone how I used them!

  • pretty good due, keep it up

  • That was FANTASTIC!!!

  • @oldbandguy thank you [=

  • mad props

  • I'll never forget this night.

    You were amazing.

  • 1. don't worry about your mouth, lol, john butler always plays with his mouth open when he's not singing lol.

    2. this is amazing! even if some parts are "fast," this is ocean, there is no set way to play it, it always changes, so this is perfect. i would legit put this on my ipod.

    3. if you have the money, get one of those stomp boxes, i love how much that simple beat adds to it..

but yea, just brilliant. my guitar skill is virtually nill. i only attempt to play peaches and zebra

  • @thestormlscoming yeah i am thinking about making my own stomp box! i dont think it would be to hard. Your right the beat adds a lot to the song. I've tried keeping that steady beat and playing and it's actually a lot harder than it seems lol

  • @Begonias6969 ha i can imagine! i'm trying to learn newton faulkner's version of teardrop, and it's all relatively simple individually, but i can't keep the beat at the same time...which is why i never took up drums lol. but if you can play this song, i'm sure you can get that down in no time

  • I've been teaching guitar for nearly 8 years and I've never seen anyone pick like that before! I'm really fussy about this tune and hyper critical of people trying to play it but you did a really good job mate. If my students played like that I'd be very proud of them.

  • un-fucking real.. I've been playing guitar for ten years and still can't wrap my head around this one.... good on ya, you have a talent that most people would kill for!!!

  • @shrmn80 thanks so much!

  • beautiful.

  • It's been over a year since you posted this and I still don't have my shirt back...I'm reporting this video.

  • @ko300zx let me kill some mobs with shadowmourne and maybe ill give it back

  • well i'll be damned. bravo sir, and are you in high school? that would probably explain why no girls could muster up the courage to talk to you dude, because you rocked their faces off. keep on truckin with your music your fuckin talented. i really liked the 30sec -1:05 with that beat...

  • @chrisbuer this was my junior year in high school. I'm a freshman in college and am still going strong with music [= thanks for the nice comment!

  • you know how to thrown down some jams. nice work.

  • How dry was your mouth after this? Haha. Nice job though, great song and a great cover. Thumbs up from me.

  • I don't play any instruments, but this kind of thing inspires me. A normal kind of guy pouring his heart and soul into something (even if this wasn't technically brilliant, which it is anyway, you can see how much he's putting into it) and creating something extraordinary. Makes me want to go and do something creative. Carpe Diem.

  • @BreakRightIntoHeaven nicest comment ever right there! thanks [=
