aw thats so cute i love ppl with DS! i cant believe anyone would criticize them! just because she has a disability doesnt mean she shouldnt dance whatever she wants. and like others have pointed out, every sport has dangers so if youre complaining, or criticizing or whatever, shut up and go to hell.:)
This young lady is INCREDIBLE!! Children/people with Downs are not a label but humans like you and I! And they will and DO accomplish things us "regular" or "normal" people do or might not even attempt to take on, and have a heart of gold and love unconditionally! And to people if you cant say anything nice or supportive then dont say anything............
I do commend this girl for being able to do what she did, but the fact remains is that this is dangerous. Her lack of technique, not being able to get over her box, and a failed pirouette that could have sprained her ankle...this is not something I would risk, even if this were her last day on earth. If this girl had broken or sprained her ankle or worse, she could have potentially ended her chances of ever dancing again. If her technique is not fixed, that is what will eventually happen.
Just because it's dangerous doesn't mean she shouldn't be allowed to do it, she loves to dance, she loves this type of dance. Don't deny her her dream just because you feel she isn't capable. She just proved to you that you're wrong. Bravo!
To beccahiza, This is a wonderful video and I dont see anything that our young dancer does that would cause harm to herself. She obviously has been in class and has practiced her little heart out for this performance. Why even make the negative comment? I think she should be on pointe! I think she should be able to follow her dreams. In her mind, she is closer to them than we are...did you ever think about that? Bravo!
@Nadirahdances "I dont see anything that our young dancer does that would cause harm to herself" there are multiple things as TheDancingWriter pointed out in which i agree with to being a concern.there is very little room for error when on pointe in order to not become seriously injured.
I fully understand her love for dancing and I commend all her teachers etc but she should NOT be en pointe! She's so likely to injure herself. I don't see why they couldn't have choreographed this in flats. The teachers should know better.
Yeah the technique is risky as far as injuries are concerned (consistantly going up on a bent knee, no turn-out, and some sickled feet), but you have to give her credit for working hard and being willing to get out on stage and do a 2 minute solo.
There is no reason that she couldn't just be in flat shoes. Then she would be less likely to injure herself severely. Any time that she goes en pointe she looks like she could fall. I'm not saying that she shouldn't be in pointe shoes because she has Downs Syndrome, I'm saying no one should be in pointe shoes with their legs and feet like that because they can injure themselves. She could have a great time and a safer experience dancing on flat.
she is not down syndrome. she is a person with down syndrome. you should change the title and acknowledge that she is a person, not a genetic disorder.
That is fantastic, and reminds me of an advertisement for acceptance of disabled people, showing a girl with her sister, who has down syndrome, both doing ballet:) However I think she should not be on pointe fo safety reasons, and because the force of getting on pointe translates into her arms, which otherwise could be soo much nicer. Just look at 0:16, the ending pose, and the reverance! Other than that her sense of musicality is striking!
omgh, this is my dance recital. ive grown up with this girl in my classes... her name is Thalia and shes been dancing at my studio her whole life. as for safe- shes had years of training on pointe and she works hard, believe it or not shes pretty strong. and her parents think the world of her accomplishments.
Although I'm not sure she should really be in pointe shoes, she should be very proud of herself. She did a fantastic job and you can tell she's really enjoying her time on stage. Love this video. Well done.
I'm sure the people that have hate comments on this are just jealous that she did a hell of a lot better than they do on pointe and they don't have down syndrome. She is beautiful!
Sure she lacks technique and all of the above but in her mind she feels like the best damn ballerina out there, sure I have technique, training, the prober body, blah blah blah, but on stage I'm worrying about how I look or I'm going to mess up I might die, I'm not enjoying myself, but she is and I will probably never feel near as good she is feeling here,
@barbieguirl The only thing I have to say in response to all of that is: if you don't feel good while doing ballet and if you're not enjoying yourself, you shouldn't be doing it. No offense.
bravo ..... i liked it :D and i agree with u stacylive2dnce i really like using the termslike this but imnot here to ague either all i can say is the shr did areally great job :D
it hurts me that u put on the Tag girl with downs syndrome on pointe shoes?? come on do we still have to use terms for people with disabilities ?? i have a daughter with mild CP and she has been dancing for over 7 yrs and she competes in horseback riding English as well as western ,,,she is NOT a label but a very special person who just has to work harder at things!! i think this young lady did an excellent job and BRAVO to teachers across the country for having special needs classes!! YEAH
@stacylive2dance Because people would probably want to know her story, maybe? If someone saw me dancing poorly, they would probably just think I'm a terrible dancer. But if they knew I had arthritis in my spine beforehand, they would view my dancing in perspective. Knowing that she has Down's makes her accomplishments more impressive.
This is beautiful. Nt many people have the courage to go on stage and do this..like me! Peoples arguments that she has "terrible technique" and that it is "dangerous" because of the increased risk of injury.Let's face is, a lot of people are put on pointe before they're ready, and a lot of dancers have improper/imperfect/even bad technique. That seems irrelevant. I mean, just look at her...she loves what she is doing, and how she is doing it seems to be working for her. I think this is wonderful
What's the difference between her dancing and an inexperienced 10 year old dancer on pointe? She is learning, cut her some slack on the corrections. She looked tremendously happy on stage, and you really don't see that with a lot of dancers her age anymore.
I watched more of the video. No, I could not allow ANY student that does not have it in her body to do a piqué with a straight leg onto pointe. Safety first!
I'm sorry but I do not believe that any kind of syndrome should negate a body being properly prepared for pointe. I understand the thought but we are still responsible for the safety of our students.
As a dancer this is painful to watch due to her technique, lack of precision and coordintation.I'm suprised she didnt injure herself she really should NOT be on pointe, just one fall will injure her and make recovering soo much harder b/c she has down syndrome but considering she is pretty talented for someone who is not the norm for dancers.Proud of her and her teachers, etc.
@beccahize I was a competitive gymnast w/ an older sister w/ Down syndrome. Gymnastics is very stressful on the body. We all take risks everyday. People w/ Down syndrome are always going to have to do things in different ways, so no, her technique isn't perfect. She worked hard and I'm POSITIVE that she was very proud of herself. Might she have gotten hurt? Maybe. Typical dancers get hurt as well. That is a risk we take when creating joyful lives for our kids. Just like your parents did for u.
@beccahize Ok you might be right but just because its dangerous and shes not as sharp doesn't mean she can't or shoudln't do it. Every sport has its dangers and as i said its not a disabilitie its a different abilitie. because your coment to me came of as you thinking that your all that and amazing dancing or in my opinion rude and bitchy sorry :L
@beccahize Yes she could injure herself, but so can ANY dancer on pointe!!!! She is amazing & I am very proud of her and her parents and the dance teachers who have given her the chance to do ballet!! Good for you. My daughter has Downs and is a great athlete. She has even participated in her high school's varsity bowling team. Don't cut the video apart for style and technique....step away and truly "look" at the accomplishment! Downs people can & do have balance issues & doing this is awesome.
I am kinda on both sides for this. I mean, i love how she think she is beautiful, and i think she's strong for doing all of this,(because if i had down syndrome, i probably wouldn't be doing this) but to do ballet correctly without hurting yourself, you need to have the strength and precision, but she just doesn't. Sorry if i sound mean and harsh and criticizing etc. I could go either way on this.
I think she is brave for going out there, but she is at serious serious risk of injuring herself quite badly. If she would like to continue to dance, I would recommend attending the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet summer course. It will strengthen her more than you could ever imagine.
i think its wonderful that she is able to persue her dreams and that she is encouraged to succeed in these. she wouldn't have been put on pointe if it posed a danger to her and if she is happy and enjoys dancing then who are we to stop her? not everything in life is about perfect technique, however i do understand that it is a crucial part of ballet especially en pointe but considering her circumstances i think she was brilliant :)
Very cute, but she needs to work on pointing her feet and her turnout, also her arms are a bit stiff. Down Syndrome isn't an excuse for that. Other than that, beautiful. She has potential to be great, but she just needs a bit more practice.
I'm happy to see that and i think it was a good idea, this girl will feel that she is normal for being treated just like her peers, regarding her case were one of the features of this syndrome is having hypotonia that put them in risk of hip dislocation, but the girls looks muscular which means that her joints are probably not on risk and thus i agree with the idea of getting her on the stage for the sake of her own happiness and the huge self confidence she will gain after this performance.
um u see she did alot of things lke going up on a bent knee and she didnt go on her boxes completely it wasnt such a great idea she should have had some more practice before she can go solo
really do any of you know her or the teacher perhaps she is at her best, she like anyone who puts all they have into something wants to show the world.if this child was injured would it ruin her career in ballet will it prevent her from being at the met, come on. anyone who knows the difficulty in movement people with downs have would see this child, her parents and teachers put everything into her being on that stage it was miraculous.it was wonderful i held my breath for her the hole time brava
just because she has down syndrome doesn't mean she is unskilled ? She seems old enough to make her own decisions and if she wants to do pointe she wants to do pointe
touching and terrible at the same time....I can only hope somebody had the sense to take her off pointe before she got seriously injured. pity is no reason to allow someone to do something that dangerous.
I just sat here and cried. Your angel is beautiful. My only baby girl is now four and is blessed with Down Syndrome. She loves to sing and dance. One of the things I dreamed of when I was young was having a little girl to put in ballet. I can't wait until Madi is old enough to start classes.
"Pointe shoes, if worn or used incorrectly, can seriously damage your feet and ankles"
Funny thing is a lot of people make comments like this but there is never any proof, with the high numbers of young people at dinky dolly ballet school on Pointe when they should not be, we should see out hospital emergency departments full of people with Pointe shoe injuries. But this is simply not the case.
@LeighaTGBallerina Hmmm........ I have seen plenty of dolly dinkle ballet schools with kids who have broken ankles due to falling on pointe. I WONDER WHY! THEY AREN"T READY!
@TheFgggggggggggggg Interesting you say this, as many people do and would loved to be proved wrong but when you try to find the statistics to do some research on the subject there is none just lots of hear say but no documentary proof.
This is sooo adorable! I bet she really loves dancing! If she couldn't dance i think she would be upset. I know i would be upset because I a love dance soo much!
I don't have Down's syndrome, and she dances a heck of a lot better than I do. Hell, I can't even do an aerobics class for fear of going the wrong direction and accidently knocking somebody out with my flailing arms.
this is amazing! this was a well deserved solo and i am so happy that im crying.. she felt beautiful i can tell!<33 although she made some mistakes that just reminds us that everybody is different and has different abilitys but we can ALL do what our hearts tells us to and hers tells her to dance:) and i think she did great!
Once again, she may not be able to ever fully get over her box, as a symptom of DS is poor muscle tone and a larger-than-normal space between the big and first toes.
Once again, don't assume she doesn't know what the risks are! She's not stupid!
OMG SHE'S AMAZING!!!! People some of you are assholes and saying that she sucked she sooo didn't! It makes me soo mad that just because she has down syndrome doesn't make her suck at everything that you think you are amazing at! So stop beig an ass and try to be nice to people with special needs!!):
this made me cry and smile. she feels fabulous and you can tell. sure she may not be the best in the world but her love for something if far more stronger than someone telling her she can't do something. so touching, so humbling and it makes you think. best video. God Bless this girl, she is absolutely amazing. She looked like a princess in a fairy tale.
This made me crry. You can see in her face that she looves being up their she has the ability to show her emotion through on stage like ive nevr seen befor. It was beautifuul<3(:
When we goes into prep she looks so beautiful though. It makes me cry. I understand that the studio is trying to help her but she shoudn't be en pointe yet. She must feel like a million dollars, like a real prima ballerina.
I see she very enjoys to be on pointe but you must have a good technique and stuff like that , If you go on pointe just because you love it then you are ask for injuries .
I would just like to point out that one symptom of DS is poor muscle tone. Many people with DS also have a larger space between the first/big and second toe. This could make getting en pointe extremely difficult, let alone getting fully over the box. I say, let her dance for as long as she can if she loves it, which I can tell from her face that she does. Also, don't assume that she doesn't understand the risks associated with pointe work. She looks like an adult, and can make adult decisions.
You know what... she wasn't insulting the kid with down syndrome... my cousin has down syngrome... HA! I didn't even use her name !!!! and I wasn't insulting her !!!! Sooooooo. BOOM what now ???? !!!!!!! Get PWNED !!11 :P
It just shows that anyone can do anything they want to. It doesn't matter if they have a disability, that is no longer an excuse b/c this girl did it and was amazing!
I know the intentions for putting this girl on stage en pointe were probably from the heart, but I have to say it just is a really bad idea to put someone out there just to make them happy. It puts the girl at major risk of injury to try to work on pointe shoes when she isn't even ready to perform in soft shoes, and it makes her look worse when she cannot perform the steps with any technique or strength. I apologize for being harsh, but teachers shouldn't do this to unskilled students.
@elizabethrice3 She may to strong enough, she isn't techniquely correct, but her ankles may be strong enough. But i totally agree with you nobody should go on en pointe just to be happy.
@elizabethrice3 I totally agree. This girl obviously loves to dance, and I think that performance wise, she did a great job. However, for the technique. I agree that the teacher most likely put her en pointe from the heart, but she is in no way ready technically. I'm not trying to say that she can't go en pointe because she has Down Syndrome, I'm saying it because she is not technically ready, and she could seriously hurt herself doing pointe work incorrectly.
im not trying to be a troll or anything but i think for her own safety she shouldn't have pointe shoes just yet. not because she's disabled but cuz she cant get up all the way and she could get hurt :(
Why must she be labeled as "Down Syndrome Girl"? People go on and on about equality for everyone, as they rightfully should, so why not just say her name? Does it matter that she has down syndrome? All that should matter is that she is dancing, which is obviously something she enjoys.
@dleduddet I'm sure the uploader meant no harm by the title, they just wanted to give viewers a little bit of a heads-up. If they hadn't mentioned her condition, the dislike bar would be huge, and the comments would be horrible. It was just put there as a reminder to cut the girl some slack.
Do you know how hard it would be to memorize this when you have DS? I was just in a play and one of the characters was a middle aged man with DS. It was really hard for him to learn his part, but every time he left practice he would say to his care worker "I'm the proudest man in the world!" and he felt so proud that he could do it. think of how this girl feels doing a solo preformance!
@lost686girl Well if the dance instuctor though it was dangerous and she wasn't ready for pointe do you think she would let her do it?....um i don't think so, it is obvious that the instructor thought she was ready so stop yappin on like you been dancing in an ACTUAL dance company for YEARS
many dance instructors put children on pointe who should not be. just because they teach dance does not mean they make the best choices for their students. it is not safe for her to be on pointe, and you can see that by how hard it is for her to stay on her box. there is no reason she should be on pointe when she could have done this dance on soft shoe.
it bugs me when people think just because your special needs means you cant do normal things. I am 16 and i work with kids with special needs (but 80% of them are down syndrome) one week i had my friends from my studio come and we taught basic ballet and the kids love it
This is so touching. I'm so happy she got to perform and feel beautiful on a stage. I'm just concerned for her physicality. Pointe shoes, if worn or used incorrectly, can seriously damage your feet and ankles. This lovely girl is obviously not technically trained enough to be en pointe, yet whoever helped her is allowing her to do a pirouette. As much as I love and support this, I wish this studio better understood the serious dangers they're putting her in.
@silenthillmaster755 not at all was i being rude, i think this video is absolutley incredible and is very inspiration, though she was put on pointe by caring people iam sure it can be very dangerous and there were parts were i did cringe slightly and i dont need people like you posting commets like that thankyou very much. I'll tell you this though; she's a wholelot better than other people i have seen!!! Try not to misinterpret things as it will probably cause you trouble!!
@silenthillmaster755 you seriously have a problem. I did not make fun of her whatsoever. I admire her courage to do this. This video is absolutley inspirational and i was merley commenting on something someone else hadpointed out. I am not a 'bitch' as you so nicley put it, you don't even know me. Please leave your personal opinions of people you don't know to yourself. Get over it OK? I commented and if you didn't like it that's your problem. There aren't rues against it OK
There's more to her as a person than having DS; I really wish the poster of this vid had decided to just add that into the description instead of trying to grab attention by slapping it right out there.
i know you probably put the title there to get more views but (as a disabilities studies minor and someone who works with kids with Downs) i feel that you should have given her name and included Downs in the keywords and details. otherwise, this was amazing. it shows what an amazing girl she is and i hope to see her continue to dance! she looks like she loves it! there is a dance company for kids with Downs in TN called Company D that she might be interested in!
Shame on the teacher for giving her a solo on pointe. I think its absolutely inspiring that she overcomes her disability by dancing, but i just shuddered thinking about what would happen if she were to snap an ankle. Maybe a solo in normal ballet shoes would be best next time
@MsBambambam90 Should all teachers have their dancers wear plain slipper then, because any dancer can break a bone at any time, Some people can keep their cool and others completely lose their shit, 'disabled' or not.
@MissKitae Its a matter of strength and technique, if you are not strong enough you should not be on pointe, wether you are mentally handicapped or not.
@MsBambambam90 I agree that pointe should only be for dancers strong enough to do so, but who are you to say that she's not? Like I said, any dancer can break a bone at any time. Obviously her instructor thought she was ready.
I love this video but PLEASE change the title. Obviously Down syndrome is not her defining characteristic, she's more that a syndrome. The title is suggesting otherwise!
this made me cry knowing how beautiful she probably felt! and had every right to I think it's so great that she can do something she loves even though she is disabled!
That is one girl who truly enjoys what she does, Most of the girls at my studio are only there because their parents force them to be. The ones who love it the most are the ones who grow up to be professionals!
I cried tears of joy for the spirit of dance that obviously lays hidden in every one of us but goes undiscovered for fear of what people will think.Remember the little ballerinas in the Wizard of Oz? They had no turn out, yet they were utterly charming.I love French & Russian Ballet & have leaned toward the Vagonava method as the pinnacle of exotic beauty.I say 'exotic' because it is not at all natural for the human body to turn out to that degree. I don't think she's in real danger & SUCH JOY!!
she's 1000000000000000000000000x better than me! :)

IntellegentBallerine 2 months ago 2

I LOVE THE TUTU.
ThatOneTheatreGirl 2 months ago
Very cute, but she needs to work on pointing her feet and her turnout, also her arms are a bit stiff. Down Syndrome isn't an excuse for that. Other than that, beautiful. She has potential to be great, but she just needs a bit more practice.
AngelofMusic101 2 months ago
@AngelofMusic101 actually Downs Syndrome limits mobility. So, it IS an excuse for her "turnout, pointing her feet and her arms being a bit stiff."
kelaltieri 1 month ago
I'm happy to see that and i think it was a good idea, this girl will feel that she is normal for being treated just like her peers, regarding her case were one of the features of this syndrome is having hypotonia that put them in risk of hip dislocation, but the girls looks muscular which means that her joints are probably not on risk and thus i agree with the idea of getting her on the stage for the sake of her own happiness and the huge self confidence she will gain after this performance.

LeighaTGBallerina 2 months ago
@LeighaTGBallerina Hmmm........ I have seen plenty of dolly dinkle ballet schools with kids who have broken ankles due to falling on pointe. I WONDER WHY! THEY AREN"T READY!
TheFgggggggggggggg 2 months ago

13beachchic 3 months ago
Once again, she may not be able to ever fully get over her box, as a symptom of DS is poor muscle tone and a larger-than-normal space between the big and first toes.
Once again, don't assume she doesn't know what the risks are! She's not stupid!

I see she very enjoys to be on pointe but you must have a good technique and stuff like that , If you go on pointe just because you love it then you are ask for injuries .
DeasyDark 3 months ago
I would just like to point out that one symptom of DS is poor muscle tone. Many people with DS also have a larger space between the first/big and second toe. This could make getting en pointe extremely difficult, let alone getting fully over the box. I say, let her dance for as long as she can if she loves it, which I can tell from her face that she does. Also, don't assume that she doesn't understand the risks associated with pointe work. She looks like an adult, and can make adult decisions.

peetey897 3 months ago
I know the intentions for putting this girl on stage en pointe were probably from the heart, but I have to say it just is a really bad idea to put someone out there just to make them happy. It puts the girl at major risk of injury to try to work on pointe shoes when she isn't even ready to perform in soft shoes, and it makes her look worse when she cannot perform the steps with any technique or strength. I apologize for being harsh, but teachers shouldn't do this to unskilled students.
elizabethrice3 3 months ago 16
@elizabethrice3 She may to strong enough, she isn't techniquely correct, but her ankles may be strong enough. But i totally agree with you nobody should go on en pointe just to be happy.
BalletFreak1122 3 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@elizabethrice3 I totally agree. This girl obviously loves to dance, and I think that performance wise, she did a great job. However, for the technique. I agree that the teacher most likely put her en pointe from the heart, but she is in no way ready technically. I'm not trying to say that she can't go en pointe because she has Down Syndrome, I'm saying it because she is not technically ready, and she could seriously hurt herself doing pointe work incorrectly.
TheChummychoo 2 months ago
im not trying to be a troll or anything but i think for her own safety she shouldn't have pointe shoes just yet. not because she's disabled but cuz she cant get up all the way and she could get hurt :(
Dancingvermonter 3 months ago 2
Why must she be labeled as "Down Syndrome Girl"? People go on and on about equality for everyone, as they rightfully should, so why not just say her name? Does it matter that she has down syndrome? All that should matter is that she is dancing, which is obviously something she enjoys.
dleduddet 3 months ago 2
@dleduddet I agree with you, but I guess they had to because people would be saying she's doing a lot wrong, and they won't the reason why.
pokexlove 3 months ago
@dleduddet I'm sure the uploader meant no harm by the title, they just wanted to give viewers a little bit of a heads-up. If they hadn't mentioned her condition, the dislike bar would be huge, and the comments would be horrible. It was just put there as a reminder to cut the girl some slack.
littlemekkker 3 months ago 2
Do you know how hard it would be to memorize this when you have DS? I was just in a play and one of the characters was a middle aged man with DS. It was really hard for him to learn his part, but every time he left practice he would say to his care worker "I'm the proudest man in the world!" and he felt so proud that he could do it. think of how this girl feels doing a solo preformance!
Anyway, just keep that in mind...

cutienaiya 3 months ago
@cutienaiya
many dance instructors put children on pointe who should not be. just because they teach dance does not mean they make the best choices for their students. it is not safe for her to be on pointe, and you can see that by how hard it is for her to stay on her box. there is no reason she should be on pointe when she could have done this dance on soft shoe.

it bugs me when people think just because your special needs means you cant do normal things. I am 16 and i work with kids with special needs (but 80% of them are down syndrome) one week i had my friends from my studio come and we taught basic ballet and the kids love it
miley0004 3 months ago
This is so touching. I'm so happy she got to perform and feel beautiful on a stage. I'm just concerned for her physicality. Pointe shoes, if worn or used incorrectly, can seriously damage your feet and ankles. This lovely girl is obviously not technically trained enough to be en pointe, yet whoever helped her is allowing her to do a pirouette. As much as I love and support this, I wish this studio better understood the serious dangers they're putting her in.

i know you probably put the title there to get more views but (as a disabilities studies minor and someone who works with kids with Downs) i feel that you should have given her name and included Downs in the keywords and details. otherwise, this was amazing. it shows what an amazing girl she is and i hope to see her continue to dance! she looks like she loves it! there is a dance company for kids with Downs in TN called Company D that she might be interested in!

Shame on the teacher for giving her a solo on pointe. I think its absolutely inspiring that she overcomes her disability by dancing, but i just shuddered thinking about what would happen if she were to snap an ankle. Maybe a solo in normal ballet shoes would be best next time
MsBambambam90 3 months ago 2
@MsBambambam90 Should all teachers have their dancers wear plain slipper then, because any dancer can break a bone at any time, Some people can keep their cool and others completely lose their shit, 'disabled' or not.

@MissKitae Its a matter of strength and technique, if you are not strong enough you should not be on pointe, wether you are mentally handicapped or not.
