A shorter, condensed version of this track was released on a 45rpm so the AM radio stations could save time & squeeze in more hit songs. This track topped the charts in North America as #1 for one summer. (I know because I bought the album when it came out). Another "cut version" was The Who's, "Won't Get Fooled Again." The organ solo on the LP lasted forever. But the 45rpm version lasts less than a minute. To this day, if you want to create a hit song, just keep it under 4 minutes.
When I was in elementary school in the early 70s, one year we did a school play using (as I remember) the 2001 theme intermixed with jazzy interludes. But for 40 yrs I've never been able find that wonderful piece of music again -- and not even knowing what it was called or who performed it.
Well, today I found it HERE, and I've been listening and listening to it! THANKS PrimroseMagic!!!!!

Marvellous rendition of the famous Richard Strauss theme. It's rare to see such a successful adaptation of a piece of music to another rhythm and another feeling . And it sounds perfectly fresh after all these years.
My dad loves this song, but he can't seem to find the record it came from. He said the album was called "Fire In The Music" and it contained various jazz artists. Can anyone tell me where I can find this album? This is my first time listening to this song and already I dig it. Amazing musicians!!!
@Oliviereggae Your best bet would probably be looking it up in Amazon, iTunes or Rhapsody under "Also Sprach Zarathustra" or the artist's name, Eumir Deodato...it is an adaptation of the classical piece composed by Johann Strauss...
this used to be played during reel changes at movie theaters...wow...back then you could watch a movie over and over..remember this when i saw sounder...what u youngns know about that???..ced
OH MY GOOD LORD! Watching the dvd Being There-Peter Sellers, reminded me of how much I SO LOVE THIS PIECE,,I STILL get goosebumps, and can just about mental-air jam to this after all these years!! The most awesome rendition[the orig is too],but the very talented Eumir and Band, make this probably the most universal tunage that could span time and space, forever and still be in style!! Yes,a musical time machine! Now,I have to work on teaching myself how to play it!! THANK YOU YOU TUBE and EUMIR <3
I haven't heard this version of 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' (Also Sprich Zarathustra) in DECADES! Took the longest time to find an upload of this song on YouTube. Mainstream FM stations almost NEVER play this song anymore and, unless one owns this recording or has unlimited access to YouTube, (s)he must subscribe to a pay satellite or cable music service (with monthly fees) such as XM, Sirius, or Music Choice to get any chance to hear this classic nowadays.
That's right... I was confused w/ the dates. I first saw the film in '68 as a 9yo and loved the music. Eumir Deodato released HIS version in '72.... .AWESOME!! Always been one of my favorites. The mind still works a litle. Enjoy!!
This Funky Odyssey just takes me to the streets of New York City in early hours of the morning back in the 70s.It was the perfect soundtrack for driving around and feeling the excitement, the bright lights , the dark corners and the danger of those days like a " Taxi Driver " would.
This was the song that got me into jazz. My high school jazz band play this per note.
As a piano player it was great.
Eumir Deodato (full name Eumir Deodato de Almeida is a Brazilian musician, record producer and arranger, primarily based in the jazz realm , R&B/funk, Brazilian/Latin, and symphonic or orchestral music.. His daughter, Kennya Deodato, is married to American actor Stephen Baldwin.
I had this album back in the 70's....I'm going to have to dig around in my attic and see if its still there...I always liked the original version but loved the jazzy beat to this one.
Wow, this takes me way back! And we never thought 2001 would ever get here! LOL! Now it's already 2010..... This goes to my favorites immediately! Thank you for posting this beauty!
I remember when this tune first came out back in the 70's. It made the Top 10 at CHUM 1050AM in Toronto, Ontario - Canada. I bought the 45rpm at SAM THE RECORD MAN ... and played it so much. I then bought the album ... ever since then, I've been a Deodato fan ....
The first time I heard this version of Zarathustra, I was more than impressed, and I wondered why this version was never included in the movie 2001, or even its sequel, 2010.
El piano eléctrico de Deodato y la bateria de Billy Cobham me parecen magníficos, pero el solo de guitarra lo encuentro decepcionante. ¿Alguien sabe que guitarrista es?. Gracias
my father had this album when i was a kid and its one of those pieces of music i will never forget. This is part of the reason I became a musician. God bless you for having this here!
@hyperdog67 man,you took the words right out of my mouth.my dad also.wow where dose the time go.thanks for the post primrosemagic.thanks deodato miss you dad : (
@hyperdog67 So did my dad, and so did i!!!! What a cool thing to see someone say the same words i can say about this. I didn't stay a practicing musician, but it is still the biggest thing in my life. Happy father's day man.
@omagine thank you so much...and Happy Fathers Day to you also. we were very lucky to have Dad's that had great taste in tunes...it helped who and what i became as a musician and also as a human being. How can one not here this beautiful piece of art and not want to be a better person? I dont know...maybe I'm crazy for feeling this way.
This is so awesome. Remember that scene in the movie "Being There" w/ Peter Sellers ('79, I think) where this is playing? His mother's just died, and they tell him he can't stay in that house anymore, so you see him go outside for the first time in his life (into downtown Philly or New York), and he's walking down the center median (of the road) while this song is playing...... I always loved that scene. He's walking through the ghetto, and talking to people, but he's doing that "TV talk".
Excellent, I used to listen to Deodato all the time and remember when this song first came out. Being a Classic rock / Jazz / New Age musician, and an Old Fart to boot, brings a real apprieciation from me to hear such a Blast from the past, and Future ..!!! Live Long and Prosper ..!!!
Grey9man... Rock On Bro!!!.... Could not have said it any better my self.... Being an Old Fart My Self ...... LOL!!! ;-) Hearing this song takes me back to the Apollo moon missions and my early teens..... What a blast!!!..... Peace my man!!!
Hey Grey9man I'm a member of the "Old Fart" fraternity also,LOL I was in High School when this song came out everybody was blown away, because back then nobody had ever heard that kind of music. Brings back some real nice memories. I'm glad other remember this piece. Take care.
If you are about music and love good music regardless of who plays it then you should enjoy this piece by Deodato.Listen to everything going on on top and underneath layers. This is a classic.
I give it a 10 ! I was 10 when this came out and had the 45 single . It sent chills up my spine and still does today at the age of 46 . I wished they used the score for the somewhat disappointing sequel "2010 , The Year We Made Contact " , with Roy Schnider . However , this became a #2 smash for Deodato because of his blend of jazz , funk , soul , R&B , and Latin rythyms all rolled up into one beautiful , rockin' masterpiece that made Richard Strauss roll over in his grave !
Hey, I'm 46 too and this was big for me at age 10 as well - because the theme tune Also Sprach Zarathustra was used as the signature tune for coverage of Apollo missions to the moon in th UK as well as the music for 2001. Reminds me how much of a good time I had at age 10!
This tune was wasted on that sellers flick;this could of served a better purpose elsewhere, planet of the apes or anything. What would "being there" really be without this grooving in the back ground i wonder? ;and who's watched it to really just listen to this?... deodato records are hard to comeby by the way!
